🇬🇷 🇦🇱 These two neighbors have been together for thousands of years. This brings a natural common taste in music, singing, dancing and fashion. The region of Epirus hosts so many beautiful songs and dances. Many of them are shared, loved and performed by both Greeks and Albanians. Each side does not know how many similarities there are and unfortunately most of the times these similarities bring nationalistic reactions with questions like "who did it first" and many more. It really does not matter. In our times, we ought to embrace our similarities and support the strong ties and brotherhood #greece and #albania have.

South Albanians and Northern Greeks once were called Epirus. So we are all one blood. We are all epirotes. But politics divided us in Greece and Albania. Love you my greek epirotes brothers ❤ From Vlora(Avlona)

@@codexillyria4132 sure. Maybe you don't know but the 'albanian language' bacame the official language in 'albania' 100 years age Guess what !!!! Alipashiad From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Alipashiad or Alipashias (Greek: Αληπασιάδα or Αληπασιάς) is an early 19th century epic poem written in Greek by the Muslim Albanian Haxhi Shehreti. The work is inspired by and named after Ali Pasha, the Ottoman Albanian ruler of the increasingly independent Pashalik of Yanina, describing, in heroic style, his life and military campaigns. Translation: All the world makes festivities, and all the districts: They bring Ali Pasha golden coins in coffers. Hour by hour Ali Pasha weighs more heavy: His name is heard in Hindi and in Yemen. In the Seven Frank Kingdoms his name is heard; And no one on this day had stood before him."[1] The Alipashiad was composed by Haxhi Shehreti, who was a Muslim Albanian and Ali's personal balladeer,[2] and who composed this work in Greek, considering it a more prestigious language in which to praise his master.[3] William Leake says that Shehreti had no Greek education and knew only the colloquial Greek of Albania and its borders. The language of the poem, therefore (according to Leake) represents the local vulgar dialect of the Greek language.[4] Despite the predominance of the Greek language as the language of Orthodox Christian education and culture, sometimes a form of cultural hybridity emerged in a number of 18th and early 19th century Albanian language documents, which were written using the Greek script. This was due to the fact that the Orthodox church, unlike the Catholic one, "was never to be convinced of the utility of writing in the vernacular as a means of converting the masses". Hence Greek script or language was used in various works of Albanian authors, both Christian and Muslim. An example of the latter is the composer of the Alipashiad.[3] The poem provides evidence about a period when Lord Byron, Christopoulos, Ioannis Vilaras, Ioannis Kolettis, Georgios Sakellarios and Athanasios Psalidas were among the scholarly, artistic and cultural elite of Ioannina.[4] Language The poem is written in a modern demotic Greek language and contains some dialectical interference and foreign expressions.[4] The Greek language used was based on the contemporary (vernacular) idioms of Delvine and Ioannina both places where the author lived.[5] Another decisive factor that influenced the language of composition was the scholarly Greek language which was the language used in the court of Ioannina during the time he served Ali Pasha. [6] Content Historically, the Alipashiad contains the unusual feature of being written from the Muslim point of view.[4] Apart from narrating Ali's adventures, the poem describes the complex Pashalik of Yanina, as well as the activities of the local mercenaries (Armatoles) and brigands (Klephts) that Ali had to deal with.[4] In the epic poem, Ali's war against the Souliotes is formalistically presented as a religious conflict, as the author refers to the Orthodox rebels as the Din Diijman "enemies of the faith". However, historical evidence rather indicates that the war was waged by Ali as a personal revenge against Souliotes. Indeed Ali didn't care for the territories of Souli, but he resented ongoing refusal of the Souliotes to submit to his rule. Moreover, Souliotes' religious identity as Christians held no particular relevance for Ali, as from a cultural perspective he ought to have favored them as being of Albanian descent like himself, rather than Greek, Vlach, or Turkish.[7] yeap!!!! The 'albanian nation' spoke GREEK 110 years ago

My dad is full Greek from the Peloponnese. I did a dna test and found many distant Albanian cousins. Dna tests never lie when it comes to cousin matching. I see this is common between Greeks and Albanians so there must be old relation and shared history between mainland Greeks and Albanians.

If you check DNA tests that people publish online, from Kosovo all the way down south, Albanians result in the largest percentage Greek/Italian.. Culture, religions and languages can change or be imposed on people but DNA remains

@@lindaS_ the ethnicity estimation is not always correct. What is Italian/Greek dna exactly? What is Balkan dna exactly? What is West Asian or North African? Greeks can get a mix of all these estimations depending on dna company. But dna cousin matching doesn’t lie.

@@m.m.7183 It's because most Albanians once a upon a time were Greek. In the late 1100's Albanian ruling class moved into North Albania and with the eventual sac of Constantinople and partition of the empire, the Albanian ruling class took advanyage and became Catholic and started Latinisation process of the Greeks, Albanian ruling class managed to reached to Agelokstro near Agrinio but thankfully their latinisation process failed their and hundreds of years later Epirus was rehellenised but as you see most Abanians are Greeks, not all but a large percentage were Albanised by the Albanian Pro Latin ruling class.

Bravo Vassilis!! Actually it's NOT who had it first. It's the culture of their region. So, it's theirs: Greek - Albanian. Albanian-Greek. No surprises there. The most interesting are the Albanian-Greek villages that comprise the border of Southern Albania//Northern Epirus [actually the same place] that is the only section of that region that has a polyphonic singing tradition unique only to them. Interestingly, no where else in either country has this type of music. These villages sing the same exact songs in 2 languages using polyphony. Now that is what I call a real shared culture. Cheers from NYC!!!

The big US city I am from is a melting pot and I have met a number of peeps from the Balkans. Only 1 from Albania and it remains obscure to me except that i know Albania is unique and has its own branch on the language tree, like Greek and Armenian. Perhaps a smaller country and population with less emigration. After watching this, i read the total population of Albanians in US is under 300k. Rare find. Time to research the Albanian culture and of course find a restaurant to try the food. Lol Thanks Vasili

The Epirus/Thesprotia region which falls between Albania and Greece is rich and culture and has a unique dialect of language for both countries, music, culture and history. Religion has been used to divide us yet we are all from the same pot as we lived together for thousands of years in peace and contributed to each others rich history. Politics has divided us for centuries now and it’s sad. The church has manipulated people into identity politics. These songs showcase how similar we are in not just music and dances but also language influenced by one another.

Indo-European Language and Culture, p.407 "Illyrian is typically described as occupying its own branch in the Indo-European family tree. Not trying to be rude here but these are Albanian and Arvanite songs that were translated into Greek. You have many more Arvanite and Albanian songs that were translated into Greek. Do you see that only the Arvanite, Cham/ Epirote songs are similar because these people are Albanians that obviously have been systemically assimilated and had their/our songs translated from Albanian to Greek. All the Greek videos were literally of Arvanites. So no we do not have similar dances, songs and attire. These are Albanian and Arvanite, not Greek!

In Epirus region there are Arvanite populations, especially on coastal region (Souliotes were one of them), they lived in the past among muslim Albanian Chams. But deeper in the mountains there are also Greek-speaking populations and regions, for example Pogoni, Mastorochoria, Grammenochoria, Tzoumerka, in Ioannina etc.

@@sertao8041 Arvanite as a term comes from the medieval term used to define Albanians: Arbanite The Greek V looks a lot like the Latin B, so Greeks mistook it from Latin texts and started calling Albanians "Arvanite". Throughout the Late middle ages, Albanian lords started using the title "Dominus Albaniae" more and more, which popularized the term "Albania" to the west over "Arberia/Arbania", as a result, most cultures today call Albanians Albanian. No one in the middle ages ever doubt Albanians to be a separate ethnicity, this is made clear in numerous documents, such as a Bulgarian manuscript believed to date between 1000 and 1018 where it talks about the "Arbanasi" people as a people living in the theme of Dyrrachion who speak neither Slavic nor Greek. Also, you're ignoring the fact that a large minority of Albanians are Christian, me included, so using terms such as "Muslim Arvanites" when referring to Albanians as a whole are wrong.

@@Domina1190 So you are no longer illyrians right? You cannot be both arvanites and Illyrians at the same time. Arvanites when they first came in the balkans were a different ethnicity. there is a much deeper truth than many of you think... the people in Greece and Albania share common roots since ancient times... if it wasnt for the romans, the catholic church, the venetians and ottomans and later the italians Greece and Albania would be most likely one nation... ethnically a majority of the albanian people have common roots to the greeks... there was no such thing like albanian ethnicity in the past... Albania was invented by the priorly mentioned foreign powers and the austrio-hungarians and has been used as proxy to gain superiority in the eastern mediteranian and the adriatic sea ever since... in every conflict they have been pushed against the greeks since they have been brainwashed with nationalistic ideas of a greater albania... this is a long story of propaganda, foreign interest geoplitics and divide and conquer tactics... modern albanians are much more mixed with different other ethnic groups like latins, turks, slavs, goths etc.... yet their closest relatives are the greeks and the southern italians (who guess what are the closest to the greeks as well... magna grecia)... today we have the nationalistic propaganda which claims everything which evidentely is greek as stolen from them... starts with the greek gods, with homer and the odyssey and iliad and ends with the arvanites (dorian epirotan mollosian greeks) and the greek revolution... today noone should deny modern Albanians their albanian identity which is distingued from the greek identity but also in some parts very close to it... but there should be no room for hatred and false claims... we had the slavic people of skopje trying to claim our history as theirs... we dont want the same bullshit from our albanian neigbours... we should be closest allies not foes...

@@iamunikk4694 He's right based on what, the dances are originally derived from syrtos, an ancient chain dance from Greece and you can find similarities in every greek region, even in Cyprus. That is the original greek dancing, even if we got some from albanians it's still greek, first because its our version second because albanians were influenced by syrtos. Cham people were especially influenced more, who in turn influenced to an extent other albanians. The albanian dancer to the left at 1:26 jumps and kicks his foot, that's a thing originally from Greece, cretans do it too and albanians never reached that far in Greece.
