Your take on alcohol and sugar, alongside general diet and mental motivation is exactly the way I preach general fitness to people who ask me how I stay so fit into my late 30’s. I train 5 days a week, but I still drink on a weekend to unwind, I don’t consume much sugar simply because it doesn’t appeal to me, but I balance nutrition and training against life and realistic goals. I feel people who over analyse what’s right and wrong, ultimately fail because what’s “right” isn’t sustainable in most people’s lives due to normal stressers that we all deal with. I’m loving watching and learning from your experience and journey, thanks for all the advice. **this is an old video so I hope you see this**

Dude, you are a really good teacher. I don't know what your profession was before becoming a pro strongman, but there are a lot of kids out there who could really use someone like you in their life. You give practical, common sense, knowledgeable answers without the least bit of condescending or judgemental tone.

The quick lesson at 11:40 blows my mind. I am a newly certified personal trainer with a passion for fitness, i try to always be humble as i know theres a LOT that i dont know yet. Seeing you able to quickly see the problem, break it down so that everyone understands it and then educate on potential solutions. All that on the top of your head, Jesus that is scary good.

The more I listen to MH the more my original question is answered, "How the hell did this guy come in on his rookie year and win ASC and WSM?" I'm starting to see how, guy is unbelievably educated in all aspects of lifting etc... combine that with someone hella strong and I guess you have someone that can podium 9/10 and win the ASC and WSM in their rookie year! I see multiple titles in his future, he could even break Mariusz Pudzianowski's record of 5 titles.

Great stuff as always Mitch! Just a comment about "moderate" alcohol consumption, as you seem like the guy who supports robust science just as much as I do. The generally consensus today on alcohol consumption seem to be the less, the better. The beneficial effects are outweighed by the negative (of course, on a general, all cause mortality (ACM) level). Meta studies that even list beneficial effects associated with alcohol consumption note that all cause mortality goes up with increased consumption. Also, few data on health outcomes (both positive and negative), that are statistically significant, tend to be of "good quality". Simply put, more research is needed, but on a general level, it seems that any alcohol is bad for your physical health and "a few drinks a week" (which many cultures around the world seem to endorse) does not lower mortality rates. Now, a few drinks to be able to sleep before a big competition might lead to a better outcome (congrats on WSM 2023 by the way, you are an inspiration). Another example is having a drink or two for relaxing and socializing with friends after a rough week, which might be beneficial to one's mental health. Many (including me) would trade a few minutes shorter life (statistically speaking, in general) for similar moments. @@mitchellhooperstrongman as far as I know the issue with those studies promoting light alcohol consumption is, that there often is a reason behind when people consuming no alcohol at all. Whatever that reason may be, might have influence on their health as well (instead the "lack of alcohol").

It was at one time widely accepted, even among health professionals, that a small amount of alcohol spread out through the week was beneficial, but recently experts are saying that no amount of alcohol is beneficial. It's very likely all bad for you with no physical benefits. That doesn't mean that you should never drink. If you enjoy it, and I do, then a drink now and then is no big deal. It's important to be happy. But it also helps to keep in mind that alcohol is never good for you physically.

9:45 ... it astounds we that you don't understand the performance benefits to strongman from running ... and that even after coming in first you have not put two and two together ... it literally enables you to have a higher continuous power output : that means more reps in a time limit .. same way it helps fighters in the ring. The power lifters have come around and are starting to list cardio as a NECESSITY after making jokes about it for decades ... the strongmen are still in the dark ages it seems. Despite what Mariusz P. showed ... and despite Big Z swimming every day ... the popular view on cardio and strongman performance looks insane from where I am at

I don't use pre workout but from time to time I like my green or black tea. protein powder I just need when taxing the muscles really hard. But often I tax my CNS more than the muscles with just 1-3 reps. Creatine didn't help me at all. Felt very very akward. But I'm more than happy with my results and progress. So I don't do any supplements at all. But for faster regeneration I like my greens ^including wild herbs ^^ Also like my fruit. Sleep and Meditation is No.1 for me as well. Love the approach with some beer for better regeneration ^^ Also love that feeling of "open lungs" after endurance training! I do running for that reason as well :)

He wasn’t insinuating it was healthy as a stand alone (as a test would show). He was using a comparison of situations, which I think speaks more to how he attacks these problems. He is being practical with the people he speaks with because telling everyone never eat a snack or candy because it’s unhealthy wouldn’t be ideal, rather give them what they desire in moderation, but incorporate work and tasks that will offset those unhealthy things (which in return will improve their level of health and maintain there mental soundness in the long run, and set them up to stop drinking or minimize bad health habits they would have)
