Common - When We Move | Vevo Ctrl (Live Session)
Declarations of cultural pride don't come much more passionate or engaging than "How We Move." Common's 'A Beautiful Revolution, Part 2' teems with big ideas, great grooves, and fierce flows, but this track, which features Black Thought and Seun Kuti, rides a powerhouse rhythm with sizable Afro-Pop influences (yes, Seun is Fela's son). When the rappers jump in, they're carried along by river of propulsion. The Chicago hip-hop icon, who's been a longtime Vevo bud, is at his best here, so goosebumps abound. "Wherever we are you can feel the prowess/Whenever we move, yo, we turn the style up/I'ma just give Black power its flowers/Whether in the projects or the palace." It was big treat to have the maestro hit our Brooklyn studios and spit this one. Heads up, greatness is in the house.

Lyrics:
Bouncing mystic Realistic And simplistic spirits visit How we live it, it’s intrinsic Kismet kissed it It smeared like lipstick Colorful on our souls A mouth full of gold or drummers roll Stories get told about us That’s why things so blah without us Wherever we are you can feel the prowess Whenever we move yo we turn the style up I’ma just give Black Powers flowers Whether in the projects or the palace Even when the pale horse try to gallop And stir stir it up we kept a balance We move in silence we move the loudest Ancestors in my dreams they move the wildest The prayed about us Praised and shoutin’ Picture this country being brave without us A slaves nostalgia Move through the woods with vigor When we got free the world move with us Now they wanna change they bodies go figure Used to call us now they want to be N* We the rivers that move through the jungle yo when we move we make the world wonderful When we move the whole world follow in our path When we move the whole world follow in our path And who can move like this Let me see what I can do right quick My people were made in whose likeness Boy fly N* never flew like this Pitch black butterfly from the other side Somebody’s style was lost it wasn’t mine I’m in a small demographic a real one dealing with all things classic Kings fabric linen and silk From the home of the solid gold Honey and milk The ones who built it from the monsoon and sand the black man The world in the skin of his hand Popped at a I stop when I shine beyond stellar fella Kwame and Kwama Mandela leader truth teller the inkwell dweller My pen signs of the New York Times bestseller When I move y’all move in my way BD energy I generate How to never move weak I demonstrate Celebrate my peeps when I innovate From my dons and divas weighing odds and evens To the non believers Vagabonds and heathens Achievers we ain’t satisfied with dreaming As long as I’m the breathing watch how I move When we move the whole world follow in our path When we move the whole world follow in our path When we move the whole world follow in our path When we move the whole world follow in our path When you feel the pain like we do When you hear the cry like we do No one cares No one cares But When we move the whole world follow in our path When we move the whole world follow in our path But When we move the whole world follow in our path When we move the whole world follow in our path

I'm not gonna make some clichéd comment about todays young mumble rappers etc. However there is a select cadre of rappers aged 40+ (like Black Thought, Common, Royce) who have refined their craft over decades and are terrifyingly lyrically proficient at this point. It's a marvel to behold.

exactly on point. but like Nathalie said, Common sense has always been a gifted lyricist. his 1st album is still pretty good to this day, but I always felt like he went real hard on resurrection. and never really had a bad record

*Love the fusion of **_"Afrobeat" rhythms via Seun Kuti (Fela's son),_** mixed with the sonic sentiments of the **_60's American Black Power movement._** This track should remind every Black person in the diaspora how much better we are when we **_UNITE our musical, spiritual, geographical, and monetary resources._*
