As a new player, I agree with leveling one character normally, just to get to know the game. Having said that, there was still a bunch of normal game content I had left after I hit level 80 and the first thing I did was grab the raptor, glider, and then the springer. It made going back to the older content much much easier. It also made joining trains much easier. Anyway, I really enjoyed having mounts to go through things.

Yeah mounts are such a quality of life improvement for core and heart of thorns maps. I know some people might be "purists" and don't like mounts for these "no mount maps", but I cannot just waste hours and hours on foot when there is a better way to do it. I did play before mounts were introduced and I did enjoy it (even though I did consider walking tedious many times), but mounts are one of the best things that happened to this game.

For the PvP testing part, it's worth mentioning too that the equipment section of your gear has a special button for a PvP build and that lets you change your stats, rune, and sigil. For weapons you can buy white weapons for pretty cheap from one of the vendors there or if you have access to the trading post just buy the cheapest of the type you want (the stats and level don't matter in sPvP)

I personally enjoyed playing through level 80 on a f2p character without any of the expansion perks. I even finished the personal story and 100% core map completion completely on foot. Sure, there were some slots that could’ve been sped up with mounts, but exploring vistas and jumping puzzles are one of my favorite things to do in the game, and I wanted to experience the original game as it was when it released so many years ago. Now that I’ve gotten through the majority of the core game, I’m excited to buy the expansions and open up the world to all the new perks I haven’t gotten to experience yet. I also prefer to complete the story in order, so once I do some living story I’m gonna venture into heart of thorns without a mount (which I’ve heard can be difficult). I can definitely see how skipping ahead could have made much of the game easier, but to each their own. I really like taking my time exploring the maps. Just my 2 cents.

No mount in Heart of Thorns isn't really hard at all. If we are just talking about completing the story. I didn't even have access to the speed mushrooms at that time. Gliding (which you get in Heart of Thorns) is what will make it easier, although IT is a required skill for the expansion/map anyway.

@@pleinclosens8304 By this time I've beat Heart of Thorns story and 100% map completion with no mounts :) The glider was the main way to navigate, but now having gone back with a raptor it really trivializes a lot of the mob encounters since you can just zoom by.

I naturally leveled up about 3 characters only because they were fun to play. The newer ones got the boost and the experience tomes collected by the original 3. So even the next ones got a benefit in that even if I played them normally, I still used tomes on occasion just to speed their progress along.

A nice guide, Im an experienced player but can understand it can be daunting to get started for a fresh player with all the diff expansions etc. Something I would suggest though (perhaps when you are more comfortable with the class you play) is playing an unranked pvp game for the dailies. Even a loss usually gives 2/3 objectives and doesnt require traversing all over the open world!

Would definitely recommend using the level 80 boost right away. I would even say that it’s worth using on your 1st character for one very important reason…Mastery experience. Until level 80 you are NOT EARNING ANYTHING toward your mastery tracks. Only once you’ve hit 80 do you begin leveling up your mastery tracks. This is insanely important because not only can you start working toward the best QOL mastery track “Autoloot” right away, but any hero point you get in Core Tyria can then be used toward your Elite Specializations. You also get a nice set of Exotic armor + Weapon + Trinkets. You can then spend your time early game getting to know your build and earning valuable XP toward those core Tyria mastery tracks and not having to decide which traits to unlock first, you can also experiment with the fully unlocked base character. Also, if your friends invite you to take a break from the monotony of the main story or map completion to do a meta event or fractal, you’ll be all leveled and geared :) I remember wanting to do Teq and Jormag events but being told “once you reach so and so level, then you can join us, just keep grinding that map and story completion and you’ll get there”…man that was frustrating lol

I disagree about the mastery points. I just leveled up a toon and was able to get the mastery points that were "commune" as I was leveling. By the time I hit 80, I had all my core mastery lines done and had 120 extra points towards my chosen elite skill line.

OK, I will play devil's advocate. I think that boosting to get mounts is a really bad idea, for several reasons. The core game was created without mounts in mind. With a mount, the world would not feel anywhere near as expansive as it feels without a mount. Moreover, the jumping mount will trivialize many activities, particularly collecting vistas, or just figuring out how to get around some of the natural obstacles. Half the fun is to figure out how to get to some of these vistas by jumping with your character. In addition, exploration is a major part of the experience, and the core zones are set up very nicely for you to just gradually proceed from heart to heart with vistas and points of interest in between. Even without a mount it is a smooth and satisfying leveling experience, with just the right pace to allow you to learn how to play your character. Yes, I say this in hindsight as someone who played through the core game before mounts existed, and with only a glider to navigate the first xpac, and I'm glad that I did. It would have been an entirely different experience with the mounts. That being said, you can do whatever you like, of course.

I personally find exploring the world and jumping puzzles to get vistas a boring activity so mounts were an absolute must for me. I would've probably quit the game if I didn't have a raptor and springer in HoT maps because traversing these maps was a pain even with the mounts so can't imagine how much of a nightmare it would have been without a mount. But of course to each their own.

to mmorpg veterans is true, not good idea early mount, but for the most people is most have it, because core game is slow, and you cant just spect someone new in the game engage with 2012 gameplay easly in 2022, it will fill slow for them imagine you invite a new player to a dungeon, you are mounted in your raptor but he is runing trying to catch you to the map you are moving for, finally the new player running arrives to the map of the dungeon he is looking for, now he enter with his core class, while you are in elite spec with good lvl 80 gear, cool maybe you have fun, maybe the new player have fun too, but you cant tell me if you are new you gonna feel slow and weak as f, whatching every dude flying and driving while you are running, this is just a push

As a new player I don't want to run everywhere I boosted a character to 80 when I started, and then logged into a new character and leveled. I wouldn't have stick with the game had I been running on foot every where. I think the raptors should be moved to core tyria(on a heart quest) and free to all new players. Would help retain new players

I'm recently starting to get into the game after finding a class i like (the holosmith) and playing the game before was incredibly boring and i felt like i was missing out on 90% of the fun trying to start from scratch so i boosted my character to 80 and now im going through the first story section and living world 4, hopping from one to another when i get bored. This way i can get some skill points from the path of fire areas and stuff so i can get decent progression and i chose LW4 specifically for the roller beetle mount because it looks really fun to use without breaking the game like the skyscale. So i can still feel progression by hunting hero points slowly and completely the story and hearts etc, while still working towards later things like mounts and stuff I really don't recommend starting from scratch unless you really enjoy it because i thought the gameplay way terrible. Knowing that you can make all these super interesting builds and stuff and then having to collect like 200 hero points or whatever just to get an elite specialization is insane to me and i would've dropped the game otherwise. I also think mounts are important they can help you grind through the boring first area of the game and make things more fun with the cool traversal mechanics, which is why i went for the roller beetle specifically it looks the most fun. And you get nerfed in low level zones anyway so it doesn't ruin the gameplay if anything it just makes the game more interesting in the lower levels
@rockaway149
@rockaway149 Жыл бұрын
I personally wouldn't suggest to get the springer mount. The core game has loads of mini JP vistas that basically become irrelevant when you have the springer. Raptor can be nice for traversing maps but is in no way mandatory. It'll decrease your map immersion but can give some QoL improvements. Tbh after getting 1 character to lvl 20 it's completely fine to use your booster. Only downside is that traits van be abit overwhelming at the beginning, but it shouldn't take to long to get accustomed to. I do recommend staying in the core game for some time before starting LWS or Xpacs. Just complete your personal story first. It naturally flows through like 60% of all core game maps so you'll get plenty of opportunity to explore that and get some mastery points along the way for your auto loot pickup.

i really don't get why people make such a huge deal of these boosts? when people start gw2 in 2022 they probably have some experience. i've raided mythic wow and completed every souls game for at least 3 times. i'm not letting the community and my friends tell me that i won't manage to learn like 10 skills + extra weapon and a very basic dodge mechanic when i boost to level 80. can someone explain to me what all the fuss is about? i'm already expecting the game to be difficult and that's why i'm here in the first place...

Not everybody is coming into GW2 with a background of raiding in other MMOs or playing challenging Souls-like games. A lot of people come into GW2 with a background of just playing games more casually, and so won't transition as easily into GW2's way of things, compared to those with the aforementioned backgrounds of raiding in other MMOs or playing challenging games. Not to mention that GW2's gameplay loop is very open ended, meaning that it's very likely that a newly boosted player will end up feeling lost once they're dumped into the open world at max level, without any idea of what they're meant to be doing.

@jcm2606
@jcm2606 2 жыл бұрын
If you're only wanting to get mounts, then you don't need to boost as you don't need to be level 80 to unlock mounts. All you need to unlock mounts is to own Path of Fire (or End of Dragons, but I'm pretty sure the process of unlocking the base mounts in EoD is more involved than PoF) and to have someone at hand who also owns Path of Fire and is level 80 themselves. If you have someone at hand, then you just need to have them run you through the Path of Fire prologue quest and you can get the mount by participating in the mini heart quest that's in that instance, without needing to be level 80. If you don't have someone at hand, then you can ask in map chat and someone might run you through the prologue quest.

By just leveling to 80 normally you get enough hero points to unlock all core skills and traits. When you boost you still get the points you normally get from leveling to 80. For elite specs after 80 you need to earn 250 additional points from challenges on the map. If you level normally you'll be doing those in the core maps as you go and have extra points, but in both cases you'll still need to do the challenges on expansion maps. The expansion maps earn you 10 points per challenge and there are far more than enough points to unlock all 3 elite specs (1214 points total for 3 specs that cost 250 each)

Does boosting work towards map completion? Or are you pretty much the same completion progress as you would be on a level 1 unboosted? Because if it’s the same I would think it would be better to do map completion on a max level character with max level gear and all skills/traits unlocked rather than doing map completion to level up and competing a large chunk of it on an underpowered and unfinished character. Just seems like it would be more fun that way.
@jcm2606

*"Does boosting work towards map completion? Or are you pretty much the same completion progress as you would be on a level 1 unboosted?"* It doesn't give you any progress towards map completion, but it _does_ give you a headstart over an unboosted character, between: - A full set of level 80 exotic gear with celestial stats (celestial grants a minor amount of all stats in the game), with a predetermined set of upgrades and weapons based on your class. - Enough hero points to unlock your full core class. - A few waypoints in key areas in the base game for late game play. - A variety of utility items such as gathering tools, a mystic salvage kit, dye packs, boosters, a few teleport-to-friend items. - A flat 2 gold. *"Because if it’s the same I would think it would be better to do map completion on a max level character with max level gear and all skills/traits unlocked rather than doing map completion to level up and competing a large chunk of it on an underpowered and unfinished character."* All leveling maps are designed to be doable by characters within their respective level ranges, so as long as you're sticking to maps at or below your level, you'll be fine. Pretty much the only thing that a max level character will offer over a character being naturally leveled would be more damage, which won't necessarily translate to _significantly_ faster completion speeds for maps.

New player here doing everything in chronological order, 110 hours in and halfway through Path of Fire. So I got both mounts now. Honestly I felt like this wasn't the best advice. Sure it's a little bit annoying getting outrunned by other players and the mounts sure are cool. But they also allow you to bypass a lot of the content with the superior movement of mounts. Basically you look at the world completely different after getting mounts. And given that it's account shared progression and it only takes about 100 hours (at least for me and I did quite a bit of side stuff) to hit the mount stage I feel like that isn't worth stripping yourself of the intended experience. The part of going through Path of Fire that much as a complete newbie is really crazy to me. The base game has a very nice flow of steady unlocks to get to know the game and your class.

Controversial opinion - boosting your first character is perfectly fine as all you're doing is skipping the tutorial. You can do and learn everything you would have levelling up the "normal way" by just playing the game at level 80, reading guides, watching YT, etc. On top of this you can play the expansions, which give you access to mounts.

boosted toons get celestial gear which is pretty sweet! You can always designate that toon as your banker/Trading Post toon. With EoD, fishing is a viable "trade". I have one toon that is my fishing toon (Ol Fisherwoman). Thousand Seas Lounge has a portal that takes you to fishing spots throughout the worlds. A two week pass is 150 gems and you can tag the nearest waypoint in each zone.

Just something quick, you don't need to go to the PVP lobby to try out a char as the video describes. When you use your boost, you DO NOT consume it immediately. Instead, you're taken to a practice area in the game where you get to try your boosted char with everything you'll be getting in whatever scenario you want for as long as you want. You can even log out and return later. Only when you decide to leave this area, is when the game asks you if you want to actually use the boost or not. If you do, it's consumed and you've just boosted a char fully decked out with Celestial exotic gear (has every stat, doesn't have the highest values). If you don't, you char returns to whatever level it was and you don't consume the boost at this time. It's super forgiving and there's almost no chance to burn the boost by accident.

There is 0 reason to boost early like this. 1. The shared inventory slot has no real use if you only have one character, and even with more a single slot this early really doesn't matter. Sure it's nice quality of life with something like a copper-fed in it later but it's not a big deal now. 2. Unlocking mounts, the core game was always designed without them and they didn't exist for 5 years. No story or instances before PoF can even use them, and they are not needed for any content. Hopefully players are exploring new zones and using waypoints to fast travel to places they have been. It's also important to learn your skill options for getting around anyways like sources of swiftness and mobility skills. I see it happen way too often that people think they need mounts for areas or bypass lots of content. ALL THAT SAID, if you are set on getting a mount DO NOT BOOST FOR IT. You can avoid (most) spoilers by instead joining a level 80 player. For Path of Fire Raptor you just need to get to Lion's Arch, join someone for the mission on the airship, afk till the town and then do the heart there to "buy" the saddle for free. Takes about 10m and people will help you out if you ask (gw2 discord or in Lion's Arch are good options). For End of Dragons you can use a teleport to friend (get one free from ley line event or a chance from black lion chests) *or* the guild hall for that zone and have a friend teleport you using the turtle. The Raptor and Springer are both mounts you can get by talking to NPCs in New Kaineng City. The EoD options do skip story but are potentially a bit more involved with the teleport or guild hall, anyone can get to Lion's Arch in a matter of seconds for PoF. If anyone is on NA and needs help, let me know. 3. Bank mule can be done at any level. Bags are not level locked and you can buy cheap 15 slot bags very easily (18 slot bags are a bit more but still reasonable, do our daily achievement and you can just about get one). One down side is that if you just upgraded the trading post takes 4 days to unlock, but if you're brand new you really don't have a huge need for a large inventory mule... In general it's much better to learn how to manage an inventory and not have issues with storage but that's a whole different thing. 4. The daily... well, this is one of the big reasons to NOT boost. The daily achievements scale with your level so as soon as you have a level 80 character on your account, you start getting level 80 daily options *and* with the expansions you'll get expansion dailies, potentially for all that you own. This means you've just made your daily options much harder for yourself as a new player and will often have options you can't do in zones you have not been. 5. "Catching up to friends" is a bad idea, fiends will down level and can join you on all content (and story) plus alts are a big thing here so it's not uncommon to make a new character and level with someone anyways. As for the time it takes, if you're going at a normal pace it should take you ~40hrs to get to 80 and this is with doing story and normal exploration (no mounts, no rushing through, no boosts). If that's still too long for you, you can use boosts, buffs (food and utility being easy options), guild buff, etc to get exp faster and if you're rushing things could get to 80 in 10-20hrs though I'd still suggest taking it slow and exploring. There is no need to rush to 80, we don't have a gear level or anything too, as soon as you hit 80 you could be in basically end game gear right away.

there is 100% reason to do it 1: one share inventory is better then none 2: raptor now is unlock at lvl 10, he can help you to map core tyria, core tyria is slow and the most content is after lvl 80, so raptor will be used you like it or not 3: booster give you bags, very necesary in early game because of dungeons drops a lot of different gears 4: lvl 80 you can do the daily with another player, he can guide you easly because is the same daily he have 5: use the lvl 80 booster give you the freedom to play whatever you want, you want to skip core tyria? cool, you dont want to skip core tyria? cool, you can do story without having to wait for lvl up, nothing stop you from complete openworld map because you are 80, you can still doing it, you can do whatever dungeon you want if you friend wants to, you can play fractal t1 with friends if you want to, explore core tyria with a lvl 80 boosted character you can grave some heropoint and get elite spec in the process, you can do guild misions as long you open the maps, you want to lvl a character from 1 to 80? cool, while you are playing your boosted character you will recieve tome of knowledge anyways, there is not a single reason to not use your booster lvl to 80 is easy , there is no risk of loosing the booster because is just a experience shortcut

@@TheWolfLucifersAngel 1. There isn't even anything to put in there as a new player that's worth it yet, especially with no other characters. You're not sharing things you're gaining 1 slot and you have an empty bank starting out. The value of one inventory slot alone is very small. 2. Well first off that's more reason to not boost early? So you're kind of proving my point? So now people have less reason to boost since they don't need to boost for a mount, and the warnings about it not being needed are still relevant. A huge chunk of the game exists in core as well. 3. It gives 4x 15 slot bags... Those are less than 1g each or what's worth about 2 dailies... And you're fine using the free stuff you get as rewards and buying some (18 slots are not much more too and better), should learn to salvage and deal with gear early. 4. No, you can't. If you get ones that are far into expansion zones they become needlessly difficult to do, the HoT one today is tangled depths event completer for example... You do know that just saying what daily you have or looking at the wiki (which lists all options) works right? I could help/instruct a lower level player where to go and what to do without them needing to have all the same dailies... You get dailies designed for where you're at instead of stuff specifically in expansions that you have not done yet (and shouldn't do yet). 5. I think I already went over many reasons not to do this and why it was a bad idea. I'm obviously not going to stop anyone that still wants to boost, but they should know that it's a bad idea and I've seen *far* too many people boost and get lost with no idea what they are doing. Many just quit the game after that too,. Especially when they don't even bother to play the game normally or do story. "do story without having to wait for lvl up" True, though you gain levels from story and it's really not that much of a gap between chapters. You're going to new zones, exploring new things, actually doing core events and content, which is a big part of the game. And you're getting some easy levels between. While I do think the old system of spacing out the chapters was better for this, you can still go through 1-80 and all story pretty fast. "nothing stop you from complete openworld map because you are 80" Well nothing really stops you as a lower level, if all you wanted to do was map complete you'd get more exp than the zone levels if you did that everywhere. If you just focused on exploration you'd hit 80 far before you finished. I don't really see the point in this but it wouldn't be an issue, especially with a mount now. So no reason to boost. " you can play fractal t1" Well... you have no gear, gold, or elite spec and don't know how to play... That said, you can *already* do this since fractals boost you to 80 in them anyways. Still would not be a smart idea but nothing stopping you if you needed to rush fractals day 1 for some reason... No reason to boost. "explore core tyria with a lvl 80 boosted character you can grave some heropoint and get elite spec in the process" No, not only are there not enough points to fully unlock a spec (so you need to do expansion HPs anyways) but you can already do that without boosting. So again, no reason to boost here. "you can do guild misions" See that's another one that doesn't matter, even at very low levels you can get to the easy locations (bounty always has Trillia, Poobadoo, or Brekkabek and all 3 have easy access. Divinity > Fields of ruin directly, queen's dale > kessex, and the hardest option gendarran > harathi. Though, as you said, people now have mounts so that's not an issue, but also you only need one person with a turtle to teleport people to any waypoint on a map. As for all the other mission types, the guild portal will directly teleport you to the closest waypoint for all of the challenges, puzzles, and races, so only thing left is treks and that's just a matter of knowing where the easy ones are (often in cities). So again, no reason to boost, I say this as someone that's done weekly guild missions for years and we have many new players joining and doing them. "while you are playing your boosted character you will recieve tome of knowledge anyways" But.... not more of them. You get login rewards the same as you would if you didn't boost. Those don't suddenly go away. If you're planning to do core content and story (you should), then you're getting exp and exploration and you're gonna hit 80 pretty fast on that first character (even going slow is like 20-40hrs to do all story + level 80). And even then you can get a bunch of fast levels from crafting (cooking/jeweler re cheap) and that's 14-20+ levels right there. Then you have tomes for your next character or for things like key farming later. "lvl to 80 is easy" I agree, and players should do it once their first time around. It's important to actually learn the game and if you're doing story and exploration anyways no reason to have that exp not go to levels.

What about a guide for veteran players who have literally no use for the level 80 boost? xD

Don’t tell me you got the patience to lvl up each character you have ? I’ve been doing map completion on my 6 characters and I found it so annoying at a certain point. And I’m going to be doing it again for my guardian 😭. But I find this profession so fun to play

Don’t boost. Play through, try all the weapons sets out, upgrade your equipment slowly through drops your first time to 80.

Okay, so i boosted my character, and tried to the do Flying quest, and it was the worst thing i have ever done in a video game. That combined with trying to get 250 hero points to unlock the "cool" specs of the class, made me outright quit the game. 2 of the most fun things in GW 2 - flying and hero specs are locked behind mind numbingly boring and tedious work. What a fantastically designed game.

I have been forever annoyed with the echo chamber on the gw2 subreddit screeching about how bad boosts are..."You should experience the game as I have...", "Do this boring thing to learn your class...". Bah what a load of skritt shit.

In guild wars 2 you only have to learn your class for endgame. The rest of the game can be completed spamming 1 in a zerg.
