Heather Gerhardt I agree, listening is the first key to communication. Second, is the ability to understand and follow through. Last, if you're not sure of what is being said, ask him/her to repeat it for clarification.

Some of us have an impulse to "cut off" or overtalk due to many mental matters. Most isn't due to habit but due to disability.... I can be very short in convo until the topic excites me and that's only due to the desire to connect yet you might not wanna play with me since you would end up feeling stupid due to the fact we technicality involved my interest and not yours.

1. Listening Trying to listen to the persons' thoughts. Maybe also after he finished the talk you are still listening and trying to obserb the other persons's point of view instead of giving immadiate reactions. After a time you will realise you already started to be interested in the other person's opinion and trying to understand the other people's thoughts instead of feeling an immadiate pressure tor prove your right. If you learn how to listen carefully you will realise people start to tell a bunch of things that would not be told even if you'd asked them about. This one has brought new perspectives to me and this is on of the most powerful one. 2. Being interested in the other one We are not always interested in other's opinion. From practicing the first one you can build a constent persistent and conscious desire to understand and get to know the other person. If you are not interested in the other person it's better not start any conversation at all. 3. Being interested in the topic When you don't feel connection between the topic and yourself, your speech, mood, face, and body will transmit it. How do you expect anybody to care about something what does not interest you at all? Don't react immadiately to questions. Think a bit. How do I connect to this thing? What interesting stories do I have about it? How do I feel about it? So for example: You have to talk about an apple and after you have to talk about your favourite movie. You will feel the difference, everybody will feel the difference. Find the connection, find interesting personal touch with it. Best tradesmans are expert in this 3rd topic because they can find the most attractive perspectives from a really usual object also in order to persuade you. 4. Breaks Speak less but give more powerful thoughts. Slow down your speach insert breaks to emphasise things. Don't care if the others try to speed up the conversation. If you carry on you'll realise they will feel the pressure to slow down to you not the opposite way.

mark salazar when I worked in sales I used to write my own scripts. that way when I practiced I was using my own words so that when I spoke it was easier to find them. I have the same problem with my mind wandering too, what helps me is asking questions about what they are talking about. For me if I give my mind an objective before hand like saying ok I need to be able to have a general understand this concept that they are talking about, then it sorta predisposes me to want to ask questions too. Hope that sorta helps :)

You're just observant. You need to feel like you have something to contribute before you speak. Easy fix. Start filling yourself with knowledge. Read up on things that don't normally call your attention. Read about current events, things are happening all over the world. Next time your in a social setting, you have interesting facts you can recall about whatever it is that you did research on and the interaction will give you confidence. Just remember to breath and tell yourself "I got this" cause you totally do girlfriend. Start small, among people you already know, friends and family but about tough things like politics and religion. Use them as testers and you will eventually feel ready to talk to complete strangers about all kinds of things. Just take it slow. You got this mama.

Starting a journal is the best first step to begin applying all of these techniques. There's so many thoughts in our heads, most of which aren't even our own. The thoughts in our head are not us, they're merely what happen to us. "I don't know what I am until I write it down."

The victim language vs. Leadership language really resonates with me. I'm ashamed of how often I use "Victim" language and I had no idea. Since I have been watching your videos and those of other leaders I am definitely seeing a common theme of positivity and optimism. Not only in their language but in everything they do. It's really making me examine my internal and external dialogue and attitude towards things with my business and personal life. Thanks for compiling these talks.

Thanks, Evan for making this video. The most important thing I learned in this video is What Robin Sharma said what not to talk about: 1. Don't talk about what we hate to do, talk about things we love to do. 2. Don't talk about problems, talk about opportunities. 3. Don't talk about what makes us tired, talk about what makes us inspired. 4. Don't talk about the past, talk about the future. 5. Don't talk about what broke our heart, talk about what opens our heart. 6. Don't talk about what de-spirits us, talk about what we are fueled by. 7. Don't talk about things in our life not working, talk about things in life are working. 8. Don't talk about your pain, talk about your pleasure.

I have the hardest time to communicate with my parents. I asked my mother "what do you want to do for mother's day?" I asked her because she never likes any of my suggestions. Her response was "I don't know." My mother is not a planner. We are the type of family that plans Thanksgiving the day of. I hate this. I know hate is a strong word but I do. Anywho, today again I asked her the same question. She responds "Can you help me clean this?" I then told her "Listen, I asked you last week and I'm asking you again the same question, why can't you just give me a straight answer?" Honestly, because I was raised like this, I was like this. I'm now changing but it has been a difficult change. My mom finally responded only after I said I would help her clean something. When dealing with communicating with my parents it has taken A LOT OF PATIENCE & PRAYER.

Tony Robbins take on building rapport through matching and mirror is something I’ve experienced talking to someone one on one. I totally get what he means when we tend to like people similar to us, or someone we aspire to be. Ways I can improve on my communication skills are being more curious and empathetic to others, expressing how I feel, and using words that are uplifting instead of negative.

Communication is about human connection. Being able to communicate effectively is one of the best life habits. Good listening is among the most important principles of great communication. It is common for most people to listen not with the intent of understanding, but with the intent of replying. Listening with the intent to understand is to fully understand that person intellectually and emotionally. You ensure that you understand by repeating back to them what they said and mirroring their emotions. By doing so, you help them structure their own thoughts and feelings. This type of listening can lead to truly open and trusting communication.
