Here for Philosophy class inwhich we are discussing communication and verbal thinking/processing and critical thinking. I find that connotative meanings bridge the realities of people because of our understanding of our own experience from which empathy comes from, which helps to connect better than denotative meanings, which don't express the vastness of the language we speak in, thus really not creating that connection we seek when we seek to communicate.

Thank you very much for this video! I'm helping to write a textbook for children explaining this concept and this helped me to understand it better. This was incredibly clear. I plan to use that quote from your former professor. I laughed outloud at that one; it hit the nail on the head! Good summary. I'd just add the element of an *_emotional_* implication to the connotative side of the definition. We tend to have implied shades of meaning that lean positive or negative for many important words.

Yes, I think you are accurate. Our connotative means are tied to culture. They could be even more localized than that, though.

Grade level? Well, I heard these words first in high school but it also depends on what classes people take. Certainly I heard it again in college. I'll say most important words have both connotative and denotative means but so many words are just ordinary that it make little practical difference to try to decode the different meanings.

Sir connotative means positive and negative meaning in sentence but in denotative we use dictionary word meaning sentence is that I understand right???

That's pretty close. Positive and negative are simplifications of the emotional charge words have. The point is that connotative meanings are more subjective and there are shades of meaning we experience when we hear words that don't show up in the dictionary definition.

Close but not exactly. Some words have negative literal, denotative meanings. Denotative does not mean positive. And, connotative meanings can be both positive, negative, or they can evoke another emotion or shade of meaning. Sometimes, those meanings are tied to culture but not strictly speaking.

Hm. Not sure what you mean. Connotative means are not universal. So, the way I feel about a word and what it communicates on an emotional level may not be the same as the others understand the word. But, to answer your question, no I don't personally have a describable connotative meaning for the word score other than it leans toward a positive emotion because "scoring" in a sports game is a positive experience.

I would agree that up until about 25 years old, I found the word simply boring, not a strong emotion. Now that I pay LOTS of taxes, it has stronger emotions attached to if for me. You are correct, nonetheless, that words may have a strong emotional charge for some people and not others depending upon their experiences.

🤦‍♀️To denote something is to indicate or designate some data or matter. The word NOTE is audible in the word, but yes D is for Dictionary. What is being taught in American schools? Then the example for Connotative is American Propaganda; relating taxes that help support our children's schools, our infrastructure and public services to theft, war and government over reaching. 🙄😔
