This is my version of the compact, take-down bucksaw idea, made from PVC. It's a fairly simple project for backpackers or campers, and might be good for Scout or Pioneer groups, too.
I got this idea after watching Dave Canterbury's video about his own homemade bucksaw (Building a Discount Bushcraft Kit Part 4 (Take Down BuckSaw for Ten Dollars)). I know his video is two years old, but I just found it. :-) Thanks Dave!
As I say in my video, constructive comments and suggestions are welcome below. Thanks for watching!

I loved that you actually did the math to figure out the lengths and the Lego demo was a great touch too!!

Awesome design and video... going to try to make one over the Xmas break! Couple quick notes/suggestions: 1. to clean up the edges of cut ends/drilled holes, just hit it with a lighter or propane torch, smooths right out with no sanding. And 2. When cutting bolts down, thread the nut onto the bolt first, then when you cut the excess off and unthread the nut, it cleans up the thread as it comes off.

I love the simple and elegant design that has been incorporated into its overall effective design; now one can also use the three sixteenth inch threaded steel rod along with wing nuts threaded on each end to tighten and tension against the top portion of buck saw frame; this is something that will add great strength, versatility and durability to the buck saw design since it directly reinforces the top portion of the buck saw frame design in particular.

Thanks for all your testing, and comments! Wow, for some reason I had never considered that the blade could fit in there alongside the center bar, instead of in a slot inside it. Great idea, as it makes the whole thing simpler! The slot in the centerbar is one of those dangerous/difficult steps, so it's great to remove that. Plus I bet since the center bar flexes less the finished saw will be stronger. I'll have to try it! (might be enough room to store an extra blade, using this method?)

Great video! If you use 2 ropes for tightening you can eliminate nearly all racking. Just drill holes 1 inch from each end of your "spreader", then tie ropes from those holes to the holes in the top of each handle (making an X with your ropes). You can use the same tightener configuration, but it would dramatically improve stability.

Idea improvments, also I didn't cut a slot in the cross bar for the blade to store in, I just bolt it inside one handle then slip in the cross bar and the slide on the other handle. Line up the holes in the handle with the holes in the blade and your all set. Also means I didn't have to drill the off center holes.

EDIT to my comment: so today I was watching your video again and I realized that I accidentaly cut the center bar hole on the string side of the handle and not the blade side. Luckily I was able to cut new slots on the other end of the handle and flip everything over. The saw winds up real tight with NO frame wobble. (I guess I should measure twice, cut once). I can't wait to get back out in the woods and use the saw again. Thanks for the video.

aschwally, This was a really good video. I like your design. A bucksaw is a very handy item to have in the bush. Your pvc design is easy to make, light weight, compact and appears to be durable. Even if it should break a new one can be made. A real common sense idea. You get a commonsensehomestead big thumbs up.

All metal ones run around $ 30 , breakdown. Yours should do ok if you don’t treat it like a lumberjack. Time and a little tweaking will tell. SUGGEST extra eye bolt and two extra nuts or a small magnet. I was awake in math just don’t remember that part. Good vid with good tips !! cheers

That’s the best design I’ve ever seen!! I’ve been looking to make a takedown saw. The only change I plan to do is make to top pieces of the storage tube interlocking by heating the ends and forcing them together. But it’s probably ridged enough without them being locked together. Either way it’s a fantastic design!! Totally gonna make one!!

Great piece of work! I would prefer wing nuts on the blade bolts, but then my fingers are old and cranky sometimes. :)

To cut the slot in the centre cross piece you can hot glue it to a 2x4 or 2x2 to act as a guide when you push it through the blade.

For the windlass you can use a tent peg. Might not be cheaper but you might have some already

Honestly I'd love it if YOU gave me feedback after using it YOUR way! It is strong and sturdy and I haven't had any issues, but I also am eager for other people to send me their experiences with use. I haven't had the eyebolt holes loosen up at all. You should be able to carry an extra blade easily if you need to, also. I think if you were a professional logger you might prefer a steel bowsaw :-) but this design is compact and light for backpacking, and still strong.

Fantastic idea. Thank you for the inspiration. I made one almost identical to yours, but with less math involved. lol. Instead of bolting through the handles, I made slits just big enough for the ends of the blade to pass through and put quicklinks in the holes outside the pvc frame. I used the same cross piece in the middle. I left the pvc connector fastened to the handle side. I cemented end caps to both handles and put eye-bolts through them. I used paracord for the tensioning cord, and when stowed, the cord makes a good shoulder strap. Over all mine is about 25 inches long, which is the same length as my pack axe, so it works out great.

@Survivalvideos1 Yeah, making a saw in the bush is a whole different level! Would be an especially helpful skill if your current saw broke while you were out there. You have a vid of what you made?

Well I finally broke down and made one of these saws. The process was pretty easy following your video but I think my craftsmanship leaves something to be desired. The saw frame is a little and the frame shifts during use. I think the holes for the cross bar are where it is moving.

I haven't had a problem yet, but I have to confess I have not used either of mine extensively. Maybe you could help by field testing it, and then reporting back how it holds up? I would love that kind of feedback! So far the design seems good, but I'm always willing to make improvements!

I've been thinking about making a buck saw and today it occurred to me that PVC should work. KZfaq didn't let me down. This is an outstanding saw and your video is really thorough and informative. Thank you. Also, have you had a chance to find out if ducktape works?

I was wondering if youve used this saw in the field, I like the design and the lightness of it, and the fact everything fits inside the pvc, I was wondering if it will hold an extra blade on the inside of the pvc and also, Is it strong? As in will it consistantly take down 6 inch trees or larger/smaller etc? Also I was wondering about the screws in the pvc, Over time does it woller out the holes from the screws in the pvc from use? All in all Im wondering how this saw holds up under use. ThankU

The design is wrong, the centre bar needs to be MUCH higher up to cut large logs. The trapezoid is exactly the same strength as the square in your demonstration, all you proved is you didn't finish high school ! lol
