I really enjoyed your video. I find your videos fun and knowledgeable. I have been doing a lot of day hikes this year. With winter in full swing up here in Vancouver BC, I have been taking advantage of watching KZfaq videos on bushcraft and hiking tips in preparation for overnight hikes. I want to thank you for inspiring me and bringing the love of bush crafting to my attention. Looking forward to more of your videos. Thank you.

All I can say is "WOW!" I've never seen a buck saw that was designed for packing out into the woods. Where I live (Northern Michigan) I can see how very handy that would be. Your design seems really great and you did a wonderful job on your video showing us how you built it. You're a very impressive lady...your boyfriend is very lucky! Sitting here at the kitchen table with a 1x3x4ft Ash board. Your saw is very close to what I had in mind except for the blind shallow hole for the dowel. That is a great idea and I plan on adding that to the build. Great vid and thanks for taking the time to film it and get it out there!

I just made one of these myself,and if there is one thing I want to stress,that is to use Oak like Nativerobin did,or a similiar hard wood...I used Poplar,because I happen to like the way it looks,but it is way to soft,cutting the slots was a nightmare,as the saw wanted to drag,and it chips off very easy around the drilled holes! Just some advice from experience! Thanks for the nice tutorial Nativerobin!

I like the hole for the peg idea it never occurred to me that that peg could fly off. Instead of carriage bolts in case they rust or seize up when its stored (this is for the folded storage config) have you thought about a Canadian nap knot in some paracord wrapped the length of the saw? Doesn't have to be tightly wrapped but no worries about rust, easy to open and you have extra cordage just in case.

That's a really nice saw - well made. I did flinch when you ran the saw over the top of your hand when you cut the groove - Having been cut with a rip saw like yours, I would certainly recommend another method - That's really dangerous. That saw will rip straight through the tendons in your hand if it slips off the wood.

Nice instruction. A suggestion is to mount your miter piece to a board and then you can clamp it to a table and it won't move on you and cutting will be easier

In the storage mode, replace the wingnuts with T-nuts. They fit flush and don't get lost because they are mounted to the cross-piece member. Along that same train of thought, replace the storage carriage bolts with countersunk slot screws. Same reason, they fit flush. Every Leatherman and Victorinox has a slot screwdriver patiently waiting for employment. Or, you could use a dime, one thin dime, one tenth of a dollar. This substitution would behoove the blade mount too. Snagging things in the backpack should be avoided if at all possible. I'll be curious to see if abandoning the trapezoidal structural gambit is a non-issue for saw frame rigidity to remain rectangular and not becoming a rhombus with the dowels and broad shoulders of the center board. BOTTOM LINE: I like it!!

I used an old ash handle off a shovel or rake and a couple scraps of oak wood. bought a 21 inch blade at true value for 4 bucks and used two 1/4 by 2 stainless steel screws( which happened to thread right into the blade, no wing nuts required) then notched with a 1/4 inch wood chisel, mortise and tenon style, and tensioned it all with paracord.

I've made one of these folding saws and a few non-folding saws. In order to avoid having to use washers to fill the excess gap between the blade and the upright member, I used a very thin razor saw with a .020" kerf to cut the channel. Specifically, a Zona razor saw. It works great, saws accurately and fast, and provides a tight fit for the blade, so that you don't need to use any washers.
@lordrichard8184
@lordrichard8184 5 жыл бұрын
I was wondering about the dowels. That seems like a good idea and a simple solution. Otherwise you have to make a mortise and tenon joint which just seems like a lot more work. Also I’d finish the saw with an oil, like boiled linseed oil or tongue oil. This way it’s softer on your hands. A varnish or lacquer finish is way harder on your hands and will give you blisters. The oil won’t.

I drilled a hole in the small dowel or pin and ran my paracord thru it so I wouldn't lose it or if it came off it wouldn't hit me in the eye. Works good ! Great job on the saw.

Well Done ! I had this build planned out in my head and was happy to see you build it. I like the alternated dowel pins but would do it slightly different. This way would force you to assemble custom fit pieces the same way each time so that is a bonus. How bad did you tear up your hands doing that long cut? I noticed you finished with heavy leather gloves. I would use a table saw for that cut. broken down saw would fit into a piece of capped PVC tubing. would add a pack container

I think for your hands it would have been good to cut down the stock a hair and still put in the finger notches which were a great idea for stronger grip while in use. I have to commend you on cutting the blade groove with a handsaw, not many would even think about that. That shows patience and skill! Have you had the chance to break it in? How’s it performing? Like you hoped?

Nicely done. Only thing missing was a wood cutting demonstration. Have you used it to cut much wood? How well does it work? I know some folks prefer to angle in the sides about 15 degrees. Do you think that adds some strength to the saw?
