ín this video I´m playing all my current Ride cymbals along to the same music - a part of "speed bumps ahead" out of John Rileys "Beyond Bop Drumming". I´m also using the same sticks, microphones and recording devices without any effects. So you can get a very good impression of what these cymbals do sound like.

That A sounds like a real flash from the past. I like the Renaissance better than some of the moonscape models later in the video, but my fave was the K dark medium--which turns out to be what I'm playing now, so I guess I picked the right one when I bought it. It's dark but it has a little bit of brightness in the "ping" and when you crash it.

There's a reason why the K s are usually the preferred choice for this music. It just sits well with everything else. Even if my ride cymbal sounds gorgeous on its own, if it gets in the way of hearing the other instruments properly, then it is the wrong ride cymbal for that particular situation.

To me the 22" Dark Medium K sounded the most pleasant. It's something about the wash it has. It's not overbearing but perfectly sound and timed for Jazz. I don't know how to explain it but it fills the sound compared to the other cymbals if that makes any sense.

I thought the Con Med Low worked best in this situation. But my personal preference is that a ride cymbal be very controllable, and have an understated voice in every situation that becomes more special the more you hear it.

Great video. The Renaissance is my personal favourite in this setting, but the suprise 'winner' for me was the Dark Medium. That cymbal type has to be the true king (or should it be queen?) of versatility. Its the only one of these that could be dropped into a high volume setting and still perform really well. I must get one!

Jazz was extremely hard for me, what helped me was working on doubles and controlling rebound. All I played was rock/pop/R&B. I would like to think I've gotten Jazz/Funk a little more down now. Currently working on Caravan from the movie WhipLash. Keep practicing brother! You got this!

Well Done. That was a pleasure listening to someone play that tempo. Most of the cymbals were crakers, just a few I would kick out of bed. The 1st one made a nice impression. I found the hi bell to be unique. To much choice. When I was starting out i bought some Zildjians from my cousin. They were medium light jazz cymbals he bought in Europe for Jazz clubing. On a move i sold them, in retrospect a big mistake. In my head I am trying retrace their sound signature. A lot of cymbals I check out have unpleasant to my ears harmonics. I can see how some would like the Turkish Instanbul cymbals, I don't really care for their frequencys. I wonder if the older Zildjians l had really shimmered or it is just my imagination. I mean it seems every aspect of drumming gear has been improving for the most part. Was there anything special about vintage cymbals?

To me, the 22" new stamp is the champ. It doesn't suffer from trying to appeal to a demographic or genre--it's just a CYMBAL with all the mystique of ancient--ok "old"--lineage. It's also the prettiest and most pleasingly complex, to me. Great old K stick. Body and quick decay. What's not to love. The other I like is the 20 block stamp A. Pretty much the same comment as the K but I like the K's dirt.
@bobbyboygaming2157

It's interesting how the new stamp K Istanbul sounds great, and has no fancy hammering patterns when compared to the Renaissance ride. The Renaissance ride sounds amazing though. I was surprised you had a Dry complex ride, I own the Dry complex ride 2 (24"). I think the Renaissance is definitely influenced by the dry complex ride.

So I might be crazy but 20" A Hollow Block Stamp sounds strangely similar to the 20" ZHT Medium Ride. I know the ZHT is a budget/student type cymbal but the wash and tone are the exact same. Maybe a nice alternative for people looking for that sound. Just wanted to throw that out there.

The con medium thin low, high bell dry, and dark medium K all sound pretty rough for this music... the rest are absolutely gorgeous though, across the decades of jazz. If Im playing jazz messengers stuff Id play that A, if Im playing modern Joel Ross/Amrbose stuff etc Id play that K complex or renaissance.
