I'm a drumming nube and can hear a difference in the overall sound between the 1-3 vs 2-4 accenting (starting around 6:40) but TBH, I can't actually hear accents on 1 and 3. I don't know if it's because the playing is too quick for me to detect them or the subtlety is lost due to audio compression (I suspect the latter). I guess I'm just trying to say an exaggerated example is always appreciated before something is demo'ed. And I do like the breaking-up-the-pattern section. It's huge. Keep up the great lessons, thanks!

Thanks very much for watching and for your detailed comment! I also appreciate your suggestion to do a slow version of my examples before I share a faster version. 👍 The long and short of it is, try to accent that 2 and 4 on the ride and the groove will open up and become effortless. I’m glad you found the video helpful and I’m glad you’re exploring the exciting world of Jazz drumming. Keep swinging!

I do a slight lateral move and pull three bounces. Very slight moeller on the down. I can survive going fast. Oh and around 210 or so it,s square. Not a spangalang or walk the dog. just light fast and moving forward feel. I live and play in Utsunomiya up in Tochigi. Not pro anymore ,, just for fun.

Yeah tried to email you. Uhh,, Utsunomiya is known as a jazz town!!! Uhh Type in Studio K live stream and you can find many of the local active players. I played the New Years Eve stream. It was ok. It was a challenge in that I never played with bass player before. He active with a big band. Uhh the sax and Piano like a cool west coast flow so I was flowing and the bass player was driving so a little awkward but created some nice tension in the music!! It was fun,, show up , set list cursory touch on tunes mainly to plan endings and go!!

How would the triplets be notated? I hear a small gap between the third strike and the next on the beat so eighth note triplets doesn’t seem quite right, but sixteenth triplets followed by an eighth rest seems off the mark, too. The gap isn’t that big.
@jazzdrumschool
@jazzdrumschool 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and for your comment! The triplets are notated the same as a standard Jazz ride pattern. It’s just a change in how the notes are interpreted. The faster you go, the straighter the notes become. Hope that helps!

Do you ever play by intuition or feel? When I started learning Spanish, I simply tried to say things that sounded Spanish, in all honesty. Your question is relevant, but just feel the groove.

Sounds like 2 and 4 are on the upbeats
@jazzdrumschool
@jazzdrumschool 2 ай бұрын
Yes, the faster you go, the more syncopated things seem to be but they're still on 2 and 4 which are really the upbeats of counts 1 and 3 in quarter notes. It becomes more of a mental challenge the faster things go. Keep working at the speed and it will all start to feel more natural.
