Dr. Todd Harris at California Hernia Specialists discusses the two basic types of hernia repairs: open and laparoscopic. Although not every question can be answered in this short video, it gives a brief overview of the two types of surgical options. More information can be found on our website at californiaherniaspecialists.com/hernia-surgery-comparison.html

Had surgery at Bryn Mawr Hospital two weeks this Thursday. I had little pain after operation and needed no meds. Operated on at 9:30 walked out to parking lot well over a hundred yards at 2 p.m. with no problem. Some discomfort. They gave me a percocet as I walked. Out. Had coughing and sneezing that caused little discomfort in the lower abdomen . I iced down for two days the first nite with a huge water chest ice pack, Had no swelling. Having the best docs has to be part of it. Was in the fifth day back to my normal schedule. Told to rest a lot first 4 days. Only problem is with fatigue. Doc said that would continue for 4 weeks and get better every day. Saw doc on l0th day. Doc said things looked great. No heavy lifting till after 4th week. At this point can do lite weights, exercise, bike riding and stop if it starts to pain. I guess I have been lucky. Ate raisin bran every day that helps with the flow of things. Had no constipation and not problem going to bathroom. At lite for 4 days but a couple chicken cutlets. Orderly told me to expect some belching and gas from the air trapped inside my stomach. Did not have laproscopic. Wasn't the largest hernia but by the time of the op it was one inch wide and one inch high which had doubled in size in two weeks when the surgery was planned. I just want the fatigue to go away, but have been active walking almost 3 miles every day after the fourth day. Had no bloating whatsoever so maybe the huge ice pack helped that. In fact, my stomach was immediately smaller after the surgery and lost two pounds right after getting home.

I had open surgery by Dr. Harris. His technique was excellent but my healing process was long and almost 4 months prior to feeling pain free and almost 10 months to be back 100%. If I had to do it all over again, I would probably go with laparoscopic just to have faster healing. I was health and never had surgery before. Getting cut open is not as simple as it sounds. With bloating and cut to the core muscles, the healing process was very long. And my core muscle cut is still slightly painful after 10 months now.

If you had a inguinal hernia as i do would you choose laproscopic or open surgery? If the mesh is put on the inside between the muscle and the intestines is there a significant risk of irritation or damage to the delicate intestinal tissue? And how many years can the mesh last in the body? Thank you very much for taking the time to answer our questions.

7 days post op for a fat hernia just above the umbilical cord. Had open surgery and mesh repair. Sore day 1 but the gas used in surgery gave me terrible pain and swelling. Day 2 onwards no pain at all. Itching of incision set in day 3 and has now stopped. I still have upper abdomen swelling but I m sure this will go down. Only side effect I now have from surgery is involuntary breathing throughout the day, which I think is an after effect of the surgery.

In regards to light activities like driving and walking, most patients can return within 3-4 days. My Dr. said with laparoscopic repair that LMA cannot be used because I must be paralyzed during the operation. A breathing tube must be used instead due to being paralyzed. So with the open approach LMA can be used since being paralyzed isn't required, is that right? Also, wouldn't chance of being unable to urinate afterward would be less if not paralyzed for surgery?

I had open surgery a month ago and have developed quite a bit of scar tissue under the incision site. How long roughly does dis last for and what can I do to increase its breakdown? Also, I do tend to get some sharp pains at the hernia site itself. Is that nerves settling down in there? Again, can I improve this is any way? Cold or heat possibly??
@CaliforniaHerniaSpecialists
@CaliforniaHerniaSpecialists 5 жыл бұрын
noel murphy, Having firmness and swelling around an incision is very common after any surgery, including hernia surgery. For most patients, after 1-3 months, all of the raised area around their incisions resolves and they are left with just the scar at the incision. Having pains during this time is not uncommon either, and will likely improve during the same time frame. At this point, heat is likely to be more helpful than ice, along with massaging the area if desired. Best, CAHS

Great concise, informational video. Appreciate it. I have an incisional hernia from a prior stomach surgery. I keep flip flopping between laproscopic and open repair. My main concern (I think) is making sure I do not get another hernia in the future. From what I've read, the open repair seems to be a little more stronger (I play sports and lift weights). However, you said the rates of future hernias are very similar. Do you have any input on this? Thanks!

Why is mesh used in initial open inguinal hernia repair? I feel that inconveniences like pain or even recurrence are caused by the presence of mesh, and oh Lord, using 2 layers of mesh in open surgery is a kind of Frankenstein creation. Of course the pain will be bigger and will last longer, or will never disappear. As the body will fight to heal own tissues but also trying to integrate the mesh and all inflammation caused by the foreign object. You compare the results in both, but the comparison should be done between laparo with mesh inside the abdomen and open repair without mesh. I do understand that in special situation, upon multiple recurrences after open surgery without mesh, or accidents with loss of muscle, loss of tissue available for stitches, a mesh would help. But not for a young person with good physical condition, which is not obese, does not have diabetes, etc.I am old enough to know so many people which had open surgery with no mesh and they did heal well and had no cronic pain, like these days, since mesh is used in all kind of hernia repairs. Using a mesh in initial open surgery is not repair, it's butchering. And possible unnecessary mutilation. Please reconsider,especially for young people, as a mesh is a foreing object,it will not last forever in the body and then replacement/removal is even harder and more complicated.

I was wondering what most hospitals do after finding out about a hiatal hernia? I have an appointment very soon and I've had a hiatal hernia before. They put me on nexium and zantac but the symptoms have been the same for about 3 years. They're doing an endoscopy here soon since my nexium has stopped and I'm getting insane acid reflux, heart burn, and I'm burping quite often. If I get acid reflux, I lay on my left side and it doesn't help at all. I know you can't speak directly for the hospital I'm going to but what would a majority of hospitals do; make me wait a couple more months for the surgery with no change in meds(they refuse to put me on nexium again even though it was the only thing that decreased the discomfort), or would they wanna operate very shortly after finding the hernia?

Open surgery requires an incision in the groin, while laparoscopic requires incisions on the abdomen itself. The open incision is larger but in an area which is more concealed. Thanks for your comments.

If the mesh begins to fail, it's almost impossible to remove the mesh if the surgery is done laprascopically. Only a few surgeons around the world are able to do this and it's risky. I'm going through it right now. I'd recommend open just incase your mesh causes chronic pain. If you can, avoid MESH ENTIRELY.

Vince Warren, We agree that patients who need hardware removed after surgery have a difficult situation. This applies to hip replacements, heart surgery, knee surgery, back surgery, hernia surgery and many other types of surgical procedures. There is always a chance that the hardware needs to be removed which can be a complicated surgery. Unfortunately this did happen in your case but thankfully it is very rare for most patients. We wish you luck in your recovery, CAHS

Honestly I would say that laproscoptic is better then open...the worse complication for hernia surgery in my opinion is the spermatic cord being compromised..had that happen to me and I wouldn't wish that on my worse enemy

@@CaliforniaHerniaSpecialists Ok. How about the use of mesh in umbilical hernias? Mine is coming right out of the umiblicus, maybe 3 cm diameter. A surgeon has suggested he’d do it with mesh laparoscopically. Thanks
