This was so useful. Just moved to the US from the UK - we had a Silvia in the UK for many years and loved it. Didn't bring it with us due to voltage issues and were looking at what we should buy here. So tempted by the ECM Technika IV Profi but don't want to invest so much in case we end up back in the UK! Think the ECM Casa V may be nice for a change....thanks Mark, I always love your videos and I will be buying whatever machine we decide on from Whole Latte Love!

Really nice video. We drink mostly lattes and unless someone has a dual boiler machine it seems like steaming always takes a long time. Not a problem for 1-2 lattes but if I want to serve 10 people, time to steam becomes more important. In this video and other videos from you, I see you compare the time to reach steam temperature and time to steam milk. this is gold information for me. I was wondering if you have all that information in a place I can easily compare different machines, or do I have to watch ALL your videos? :)

ghislaincarrier Hi, thanks for the comment and request. Search for my video on premium entry level machines. That one compares 5 single boiler machine steaming times. For larger groups look to a heat exchange boiler machines or dual boiler. Those can generally be ready for round 2,3,4...10 by the time you grind for next shots. A favorite HX machine of mine is the Profitec Pro 500. Marc

Very nice, I have my second Miss Silvia in the Anniversary Black... dead sexy and my original is still going strong after 12 years. The pressure gauge and easy OPV is a killer upgrade, though I have never needed to adjust and may have to kick up or down a notch on my Rocky if the beans vary greatly. Not overly attracted to the little buttons on the Casa. I may be biased, but think Miss Silvia has a bit more curb appeal. Absolutely cannot go wrong with either. Thanks for a another great review!

In comparison to the Silvia, ECM has come a long way in making better coffee machines with attention to superior stainless steel finishes (cosmetically)and on this one, they have produced in my opinion a desirable appliance with the built in necessities. Although, the Silvia is a marvelous machine and produces superb espresso. Personally, for a few extra dollars your getting what you need with the ECM instead of paying extra $ for the Silvia attachments..ECM has my Vote again on this one!

Hi J, Thanks for the comment. Silvia is a much loved machine but ECM has upped the game with the Casa V. Some users go for PIDing Silvias for $150-$200 to smooth out the huge 60F temp swings in boiler water temp. Coming up, we'll be doing some testing with the Casa to see what its temp swings are. Based on testing done in this video I suspect they are narrower in the Casa than the Silvia.

I'm curious about the stable temps on the Silvia. A lot of videos, including one of yours, make it seem like you have to go to great lengths to get the right brew temp on the Silvia (dealing with dead-bands). Were you only able to obtain those stable brew temps because of these techniques? Or has Rancilio tightened the temperature range so that its easier to get stable temps? Thanks for a great review, by the way! Ordered a Silvia today here in Oxford, England.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 5 жыл бұрын
Nicholas Levi-Gardes Hi, thanks for the comment and question. As far as I know nothing new on the Silvia that would tighten up the temps. It’s a fairly common thing with single boiler machines. Once you get to know your machine you can use the techniques to get relatively consistent brew temps.

Video was helpful in deciding which of the two to get, but for us in Austria in 2020 there's about a €300 (US$350) difference between the two, ECM obviously being the more expensive one. At that price point I'll probably lean more towards the Rancilio as the machine differences are not enough to justify $350 more

I love these videos. Marc does a great job. My God these semi-autos seem to be a royal pain. All the purging, flushing and obsessing over temperatures before pulling a shot. Then make sure you let off some steam so you don't hurt the boiler. Then there's the requirement for a serious grinder. So you drop $1500 and it's still difficult to "dial in" your shot. With so many variables that can go wrong, I can see why superautos are becoming more popular. They're more consistent than humans. It's the rise of the machines.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 5 жыл бұрын
Hi DD83, Thanks for the comments! For purists the bean to cup automatic machines cannot match the potential quality of semi-auto machines. As you mention they are consistent as well as convenient. For some that's more important than the hobby aspect of tinkering with the variables. Keep in mind the single boiler machines in this video require more skill to operate than machines with heat-exchange or dual boilers. Marc

I am curious if your opinion is still the same with the price difference being closer to $300 now. The Silvia with a $200 Auber PID comes in around a $100 less than the Casa V. I have had my Silvia for 9 years and still going strong but have started to looking at a step up like some of the Rocket Machines.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mitchell, Thanks for the question. My opinion is the same. Casa has excellent build quality compared to the Silvia. That said, take good care of the Silvia and no reason it can't go for years. Personally I'm a little iffy on the value of aftermarket PID in a low volume boiler machine like the Silvia. I'm sure they run in a much tighter temperature range the pressure or thermostat regulated machines but for most users once they get to know a machine it's not difficult get consistent brew temps. Where you looking at Rocket machines with PID and HX boiler? Or maybe the non-PID Appartamento? The newer HX machines with PID from Rocket are amazing as far as temp stability. It used to be one had to flush HX machines prior to pulling a shot. That's not the case with PID in the Rockets. Also consider my favorite HX/PID machine the Profitec Pro 500 PID. It's currently similar in price to the Appartamento which does not have PID and priced below Rocket's Type V HX/PID machines. www.wholelattelove.com/products/profitec-pro-500-pid-espresso-machine Marc

Hi Marc, love your videos. I have learned a lot from you. I made this test with my new My Gaggia Classic Pro using a paper cup and it measured close to 80 C (with around +/- 2 degrees celcius variations in a row of 3-4 shots). When I put a leveller below the cup to move it closer to the top, it jumps +5 C and comes to your mentioned level of 85 degrees celcius (only once 90 C). It seems to show fairly good consistency however I am still not sure how this looks compared with your results. It is winter time here in İstanbul and you are mentioning up to 15 Degrees variation should be expected in the paper cup. However if I take apples to apples and measure the temperature of paper cup sitting on top of the drip tray, variation is 25 F in this case. Do you think I should take it to service for testing or just simply send it back? Is it wrongly set to low temperature? I haven't been able to test the machine using non pressurised filter so I don't know if it helps when I say taste of espresso is too sour almost every time (using pressurised filter). Thanks.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Murat, Thanks for the kind comments and question! Incredibly difficult to get accurate temperature measurements in paper cup. They can let you know if something is really out of whack but measuring in that way is highly inaccurate. Your paper cup temps sound reasonable so I do not believe anything is wrong with your machine. Like other single boiler machines controlled by thermostats you will get temperature variance depending on where the machine is in it's heating cycle. A the high point of heating cycle shortly after the brew ready light comes on you may have flash boiling of brew water. If you believe your brew temps are low you can push the steam switch for 5-10 seconds to surf the in boiler temps up a bit. I believe if you work with the machine a bit you'll come to understand where it is in it's heating cycle and how to manipulate brew temps artificially. Hope that helps! Marc
@muratozt
@muratozt 3 жыл бұрын
@@Wholelattelovepage Thanks, well noted. When I do the flashing alone, I almost never see vapour. Maybe I try the steam switch trick in different time lengths and try flashing afterwards to see how many seconds of steam switch keeps me without vapour during flashing. Then I use that setting. Other than that, do you believe a PID kit installed in this machine could do this without much headache? Thanks

Thank you Mark. I need an upgrade recommendation for Christmas. a couple of questions please your opinions? Context) My Mr coffee 15 bar espresso maker broke. it had a thermal block and real steam wand. I have now a scrappy little EC155 Delonghi with a regular basket. 1) Does this have a regular boiler or thermablock? 2)If a real boiler, why do expensive models use bigger one when I can quickly heat and keep steam temp with small boiler? Seems the Silvia requires all sorts of BS to make a latte whereas my Delonghi is a breeze. I also added a real steam wand to it... I would argue once I have a ROK grinder my setup is equivalent to 1000 breville and stuff. I am using a cheap Sboly(Amazon) stainless conical burr grinder modified for espresso by myself step-less and locks in place... For someone like me, never had espresso at a bar. only a dozen latte from cafes and mine are light-years better IMHO. I have a good tamper, bottomless portafilter mod etc. I am keen to hack my gear, care about cost but want something with as much control to the user as possible. Want to control temps, preinfusion, even pressure (LaPavoni? ). Budget is 1k. I like to wake up to make coffee vs make coffee to wake up.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 жыл бұрын
Hey HOB, You are welcome! My apologies for a delayed response - been on vaca and offline for a week or so. 1. The Delonghi uses a thermoblock boiler. 2. Trouble with thermoblocks is they are rather inconsistent with brew temp. Additionally, they have no means of heating up the portafilter and portfilters on that type of machine are typically made of lightweight aluminum with very little thermal mass. Beyond that they are undersized when compared to standard 58mm which can work with much larger coffee doses. According to SCA survey of baristas working in specialty shops avg coffee dose used is 19g! Thick you'd be luck to get anything more than 14 or so in the Delonghi basket. Drink quality is all over the place! Go to national chain shops and you are likely to get an under trained barista steaming milk too hot and using an automatic machine for espresso. With a little knowledge/skill, good beans, good grinder and decent machine average home user can do much better - and save a bundle long term. With a $1K budget (assuming that's machine only), You will be limited to non PID machine. Ok now I need to know. I have a casa v and I loved it for weeks. My friend recently told me to switch to distilled water and now every shot I pull is incredibly bitter. I want to go back to regular filtered water but he told me my machine will build up too much calcium from minerals and could ruin my machine. What do I do?!
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 5 жыл бұрын
Hi CC, You got some bad advice! Lacking any minerals distilled water will over extract the coffee and cause bitterness! But that's just the start. Ultra-pure water like distilled or 0 TDS reverse osmosis water is an incredibly good solvent. It will pull ions from metals and cause corrosion! One reason why distilled and RO water is never stored or transported in metal! Corrosion is kind of the opposite of scale. You do want some minerals in your brew water. A happy balance which minimizes scale formation and does not cause corrosion. Helps to know how hard your source water is. If relatively soft regular descaling maintenance will take care of any light deposits. If hard, options include prefiltering your source water to reduce calcium. Our favorite solution for your type of machine are filters which use ion-exchange to reduce calcium by exchanging with magnesium. This maintains a mineral level to prevent over-extraction but limits scale formation. BWT makes ion-exchange filtering pitchers are pad filters which you drop into your machines water reservoir: www.wholelattelove.com/bwt-penguin-2-7-l-water-pitcher www.wholelattelove.com/bwt-bestsave-m-anti-scale-filter Marc

@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, Thanks for the questions. As mentioned in video prices change from time to time but currently the Silvia M is $685 and the Casa V is $849. Both machines use internal reservoirs as water source and cannot be direct connected to household plumbing. These machines not appropriate for continuous brewing and steaming. As single boiler machines they take some time to get up to steaming temperature and following steaming the boiler must be refilled (cooled down) before brewing again. If looking for a plumb-able machine capable of near continuous use - and simultaneous brewing and steaming one of our favorites is the Expobar Brewtus IV-R. It's a dual boiler machine w/PID, built like a rock and is an excellent choice based on price vs. performance. Check it out here: www.wholelattelove.com/expobar-brewtus-iv-r-with-rotary-pump
@Kref3
@Kref3 6 жыл бұрын
If you want constant steam and constant brewing you either need a heat exchanger or a dual boiler machine. Plumbing in is not really necessary, an internal tank is quite sufficient. But define constant. I would say regular. Really constant is something that would require a professional machine like you would find at professional coffee shops. The Brewtus is nice, but it is also pricey and your question indicates that you do not know much about espresso making and as you look at the cheaper models I assume that the Brewtus might also exceed your price range. Look at the Breville BES920XL dual boiler. The stats of this thing are quite interesting and the price does not hurt as much.

You didn't mention that the Silvio has the E61 brass brew head. Would that make a difference in quality shots? I bought the Silvia from you guys about 10 years ago and so far have had no problems. No rust either. I did put a PID in it but it died after 2 years so I removed it and learned how to manage without it. I think my next machine, if the Silvia ever goes, will be the Protec 300 in that it is a substantial upgrade. Although, I think my wife, who likes things simple and only drinks espresso shots would prefer the Casa V.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 6 жыл бұрын
Hi carlcat, Thanks for the comment. While the Silvia does have a heavy brass group head it's not an E61. The Silvia is a wonderful machine but has not changed much over the years. As you know, the pain with the machine are huge swings in boiler temps - PID retrofit tames that. The 300 with dual boilers and PID is a huge upgrade. Solid brew temps, steam always available. For milk-based drinks it would be a life changing experience compared to the Silvia. Might also consider the Pro 500 PID. Rock solid brew temps, never ending steam power, E61 group and nicer casework and valves than the 300. Check it out here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b7ajZ62X1ri0pX0.html

The Pro 500 is a sweet machine and it would be a nice machine for me, but too much machine for my wife. She likes a simple machine that heats up very fast, she has no patience for long heating times. ( I taught her, rather than temp surf, just push the steam button on for 20 seconds or so after the boiler light goes out, then turn the steam button off, and then push the boiler/coffee button with the hotter water) I really think the Profitec 300 would be a nice compromise for the both of us. I keep telling my Silvia "hurry up and die already", but she refuses, she can be very stubborn. ;-)

Hardly a fair comparison! Pretty much like comparing a new car to a car that's several years old. The Silvia will have to be redesigned, no doubt about it. Anyone purchasing it now would be seriously lacking in information. It had it's time and made many folks very pleased but time marches on, and thankfully, we benefit. I purchased an ECM Classica PID a few months back and I really can't get over the quality of my espresso. All the issues with past machines just melted away. I was going to rebuild my Breville double boiler, I'm on my second, but the thought of opening up that case and looking at the rats nest just makes me shudder. Big ECM fan!

Very happy and easy to make great drinks.

Alex M What a shame you missed out on the PID but if your still pleased so job done. Profitec is as good as ECM in my opinion. Personally, I seldom drink milk based drinks so single boiler satisfies me perfectly. After several months use, my machine started acting up, i.e., noisy, pressure issues. Figured it needed a descaling but was concerned about breaking out scale and causing a clog. But it wasn't working properly anyway so I plowed ahead. How embarrassing to discover descaling was no problem whatsoever and my machine is back to working like new. So, don't be afraid of normal maintenance on your new machine.

Appreciate your follow up They may have changed it over the years... but many others have noted this issue Here is one comment “17 grams in a Stock Rancilio double basket is a huge updose and could take a ball peen hammer tamper to get it all in there.” So maybe if I heaped the basket, I could of got 15. That said, it was easy enough to get a new basket. Since I have a bottomless portafilter, I have no idea if there were any basket size constraints in the Sylvia porta filter. Whole Latte Love BTw, Mark, one issue that I have not seen discussed is the subtleties of achieving a stable temp on a Sylvia type machine. The following TEMPS are based on an aftermarket Sylvia PID MOD If you run your shots with the heating element off... new water will flow into the boiler and somewhat rapidly drop the brew water temp..... where as if you have the heating element on, the added heat from the heating element will balance the cold water from the reservoir. This will keep boiler water temp more stable. This whole dance also depends on how cold is the water in the reservoir is..., and what is the brew water flow rate through the coffee which impacts how rapidly the boiler is re filling with cold water This is probably much more info than your listeners want. OTOH, temperature stability is one of the issues addressed by getting a more expensive machine.

Those specs point to higher steaming power and quicker recovery in the Casa V. If steaming lots of milk is important to you I'd consider moving to a machine with HX boiler. @Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 5 жыл бұрын
@@thenayeonkim Boilers on these machines automatically refill. You do need to cool down the boiler after using the steam function. You have to do that on all single boiler machines. To cool down, you open the steam valve and turn on the water dispensing function until a solid stream of water comes out of the steam wand. Both machines produce hot water out of the steam wand when steam is off.

The machines are at different price points, but if you add a PID to the Silvia, they are about the same price and it ups the performance of the Silvia to another level. I would rather have a PID than a pressure gauge. I am not sure about your steam times; I know the Silvia is at steam temperature within 80 seconds of pulling a double shot and does it consistently.

GJ Michaels I agree. You are correct about the time it takes to build steam; a little over a minute. Sorry if my English is not perfect. The video was a comparison of machines with unequal price points, but the PID levels the playing field and well worth the cost. I want to say that I have had NO rust issues with the Silvia and my machine make 3 espresso drinks per day, seven days per week, plus hot water for tea every day. Most of the purge and rinse is done into a measuring cup. For anything else, simply rinse off the catch tray and wipe it dry at the end of use for each day, so once per day it gets wiped dry. Once every 2-3 weeks, I wipe the black area (where the tray sits) with WD40. Easy, simple and no rust in 5 years. The Silvia is much easier to service yourself, or if you know someone handy. Every part, including the boiler, is available on-line, if needed.

For a long term purchase it seems like no contest for the ECM. Just the ease of adjusting the pressure and knowing how much pressure you're getting is worth the extra money. If you keep the thing 10 years, the difference on a per day, pro-rated basis is pennies. Note that both machines lack a PID, which IMO is essential to repeatable and consistent pulls. I currently have a Gaggia Classic with a PID and it is more consistent than my friend's Silvia w/o the PID. My next machine will be an upgrade, maybe an ECM or Rocket. Who knows? But I will never own a machine without a PID. Interestingly, my old machine that died was a Saeco Sirena and I think in general made better coffee than many of the "better" espresso machines out there. JMO

Look at the blonde gushers from over extraction. Why they keep pulling the shot when the color blondes is beyond me. You can't get quality extraction over 20 seconds in machines like this. The water temp plummets right after you start pulling the shot. To get a proper shot in terms of time and water temp, you need to spend the $$ for a quality HX machine, dual boiler preferably.
