I wasn't able to source a more current model of McCulloch as they are only sold at certain dealers unlike the Poulan which you can buy at almost every mega store. I actually had a choice between a 14 inch Stihl and 14 inch McCulloch when I picked up mine, guy was selling both for the same price, I picked up the Mac because I wanted to try the brand out, and it had a yellow McCulloch bar cover, hahaha. Great comparison! 👌

Great comparison 👍 I'd have to go with the Mac. I know they are harder to work on, but I've never had good luck with the cheap poulan saws.

Thank you Alan Marshall for the comment. I like the mac too but I'm not made of money. I'd like to do a long term project where I buy a poulan and log its use and test its compression thru a year or two or based its run time. It would be arduous tho and I don't live on ten acres yet.

The McCulloch is a little unconventional in design, but fairly easy to work on if you have any experience with chainsaws. Nothing on the saw is cramped to work on, so disassembly and assembly is straightforward. The McCulloch is old school in it's design with a non-stratocharged engine, which is the biggest difference between these two saws. Power output is pretty typical for a saw of it's displacement, weight wise it's a little on the heavy side. Some of these saws come with anti-vibe, some don't.

Well considering they are made by the same manufacturer ( Husqvarna ), id probably choose McCulloch!

Thank you for the praise. It means a lot to me. Some of the equipment I keep to sell but most are friend's equipment that lend them to me to fix for the channel.

Oh you were asking about these two. Strangely enough the poulan is dead. It has low engine compression so it was given to me for parts or rebuild for the channel. If I get it running I'll keep it unless someone asks to buy it but I probably won't be advertising it. The mac I'll be giving it back to the owner as I had to rebuild the carb and put new lines in it.

@@HomeGaragechannel I believe they were bought by Husqvarna, so modern McCulloch's are actually Husky clones or made by one of the other companies owned by Husky.

You get what you pay for. I love my old Macculloughs but I use my Jonesered more than any and yes I own a stihl

Family saws are Stihl ms311, and 025. The ms180 is mine. I have a Homelite xl-12 that was my great grandad's torn down for piston, cylinder and crank seals. I have never used it, but I saw my grandad use it when I was a kid. I have a cheap Chinese Homelite that I learned to cut with. I have an old top handle Poulan 250a with good spark, I need to find a fuel line for. Now that I think about it I have not owned many! I have held many of the cheaper Poulans, although I have never owned one. I have never even seen a Mac.
