The biggest disadvantage that I see with fabric pots, is that if you want to re-use them it's difficult to take the plant. Some also develop mold. Air-pots are easier to re-use because you can open them up.

If you compare the cost the fabric is much better a quick search and you can get 5x 2 gallon fabric pots with handles for 8.99. Or one plastic air pot same size 17.99. Fabric bag is also biodegradable and you can stack tons of them up in a closet or cabinet. You can even just plant the whole fabric pot into the soil outside. I don't see how you could think the air pot is even a cost effective option for someone who is growing even just 5 plants.

I don’t really care for black plastic when growing outdoors. They get too hot from the sun unless you use something to shade the pot. And that gets annoying if you have to move them around to catch the sun after 3-4 pm. I used white plastic buckets with lots and lots of holes drilled through them. I worried about soil washing out through the holes but that was very minor.

Does this mean you can plant a perennial fruit tree in the one grow bag and leave it there forever? Negating the need for repotting needed with plastic pots?
@martisbvk
@martisbvk 4 жыл бұрын
It's a better root situation than a standard container. The root structure is air pruned and will not circle. However the roots do grow into the fabric. Then the fabric becomes moldy and rots away in places. The bottom where it touches the ground develops a fungus like slime. Soil tends to dry out very fast as the fabric wants the water more than the soil want to hold on to it. You will have to "repot" at some point. The roots that are in the fabric will tear off

*QUESTION:* _what about placing the AIR-POT inside a slightly larger fabric bag?_ *What are the advantages & disadvantages??*
@timothydobson4657

That is what I was thinking. Perhaps, the air zone may be too humid to dry the root ends, or it just may be the right thermal moderator and hybrid solution. Thinking of asphalt layer with flexibility and grip over a concrete pave base with structure and no flexibility - they are better as a hybrid vs. as individual systems. Note when new concrete highway installed, the line grooves sawed into the concrete. Concrete needs about a year to cure well and is too slippery to drive on when wet / snow. The grooves act as mechanical bond gap for the future asphalt layer topping. I think the fabric and air-pot corrugation format might work well together. Aesthetically, if used for long term planting, a decorative solid planter / container with generous side air space could keep the air factor balanced - though likely get more humid. Try it out.

What I'm not feeling about the fabric and air pots is how they get clogged with old roots from previous plants and also the watering gets trickier since it may escape right away instead of getting into the soil effectively. Takes much more time to water properly IMO.

Here is the information from the video. Traditional pots are old technology from the 1940s. All they do is hold soil. Air Pots and Fabric grow bags are advanced technology. Air Pots prune roots to create the perfect root ball, and that’s it. Fabric bags prune roots, but not as well as the Air Pot. In addition fabric bags provide thermal insulation and faster water drainage. There saved you 5 minutes.
