I like the idea of Sims 4 being around for another ten years. But, unless they can get the bugs , glitches, and customers concerns under control. I wouldn't want to see it happen. I rather, have the game end. When it's still semi playable.

The Sims 1 with seven packs does better than the Sims 4 with its over a hundred packs. Sure, each pack in the Sims 4 has more content, but the Sims 1 has an overall roundness. You get a more coherent playstyle, less bugs and glitches, a consistent way to build your sim's personality, while the Sims 4 has gone through a never-ending soul-searching that didn't really end with many aspects that were tested and soon forgotten (traits, whims, memories, aspirations, learned behaviors, sentiments, likes&dislikes, wants&fears, milestones, etc...) Also, while each expansion pack in The Sims 1 came with just a single subhood with 10 lots, they have a greater lot variety than each world in the Sims 4...

Agree. The Sims 1 built on intricate, cross-interactive systems that work together in an ecosystem for fulsome and meaningful gameplay. The Sims 4 give you a plethora of checklists and stock animations that they expect players to check off mindlessly. That to me is not gameplay, it's a chore of To Do lists.

I remember playing the sims 1. I was embarrassed because it was considered lazy and indulgent for a 40 yo to be playing games. I loved it, though. I would play for hours after work, dinner and homework with the boys. Now, it still is a bit judgy out there if we admit to playing games for hours in our 60s, but online it is accepted as natural. Love my sims. I donated the old versions last year. Now someone else can become addicted to the franchise.

I actually think more diverse representation needs to happen in the gaming industry. Right now I feel like it's seen as a very Gen Z thing to make an income playing games, but gaming isn't limited to those under 30. Myself, being over 30, still consider it massive hobby, and it has honestly kept me sane during my cancer treatment. Don't let anyone tell you that gaming is lazy or indulgent. Studies have shown how gaming, especially ones that require you to solve puzzles and think critically, actually reduce the risk of Alzheimer's. So really, you're doing yourself a favour! 😉💪

I'd actually make the argument that The Sims 1 is the better game generally purely on the case that its content basically all worked out of the box. Because it had to. The industry was completely reliant on physical sales. You couldn't just keep patching a game after launch to fix problems. There wasn't a launcher to automatically keep your game up to date. At best, you had a website with a patch you had to manually download from to fix any issues but there were rarely any major issues to patch. People were paid to beta test these games in advance before release to catch these problems. These days, that's not the case and The Sims 4 is a great example of the fallout of it, where the game releases in a bug-ridden state, needs constant patching, each new expansion and feature is bugged on launch and some of these bugs are still in the game almost a decade after release because they're too busy churning out new DLC to sell that's also bug-ridden... I can't, in good conscience, call a game like that better than a fully functioning predecessor.
@LunaRuna212

I think I read somewhere that back in the day of the Sims 1 they added bug fixes for base game and stuff like that with the installation file of the latest expansion pack at the time (which used to be sold as physical CDs obviously). I wonder how difficult it was for them to make those patches in a way that it would work with whatever combination of expansion packs a player had. Usually, nowadays patches MUST be installed in the right order for them to work and not corrupt the game files. With game launchers, this is usually not a problem for the regular customer. But back in the early 2000s, you couldn't expect from your customers that they would sit there and manually install like 50 patch files manually in the right order. Many of the Sims 1 players were children after all and the adults wouldn't want to spend so much time with patching either. Yet they did make it work with those expansion packs. Really interesting.

Sims 1 is the better game. When you play it you are entering another world made with creativity and passion. Everything in the game serves a purpose and is meticulously designed and thought out. When I played (emphasis on the past tense) the sims 4 - it felt like there was no cohesive vision or passion put into it. Everything in the game feels like it was decided by a vote in a boardroom based on customer surveys and marketing - end result is a wishy washy game that kind of gives everyone a bit of what they want without actually giving anyone what they want - a unique experience

I loved how ambiguous The Sims 1 as a culture was. Weird cities, vague semblances of Hollywood, their music, language, etc. it was more open & bizarre at times. The Sims 4 feels like attempts to make it feel closer to home, which sometimes I don't like as much. Home is fun and it's cool seeing references to stuff I'm familiar with, but irl life has its downsides, and I appreciated how the Sims 1 is more of an escape from reality than how The Sims 4 feels like a reflection of it. Same reason the very realistic look of Life By You actually is throwing me off a bit.

Thank you for pointing out that sims team treats us like literal children. I couldn’t pinpoint why I cringe so much while watching sims events (or rather avoiding them). Sims 1 Making Magic was my ultimate favorite pack, it had so much charm, even those little dragon pets that used to set your whole household on fire and were basically untamable, but you worked so hard to get one! or that you had to have magic coins to buy a house in magic world and it was something to work towards. And at night you had those noises that scared the living s**t out of you. It had character! It was challenging and interesting. There was a book with hidden recipes. Duels were actually clever and victory depended on your choices. Coins falling from the sky in literal piles. Transforming cats into humans. Flamingo transforming into dancers. The list just goes on.. And what do we have in the sims 4? The most generic magic you could think of. Clean your toilet with magic, yippee! So disappointing.

Sims 4 seems like they randomly throw stuff at the wall. Like they have a dart board of things then release these hyper specific packs. Sims 1 packs often felt like they added to the overall gameplay of every player. Sims 4 has a few packs like this, but for the most part it seems like they loose something in being hyper focused on one thing (like bowling for example which was a small feature in larger packs in Sims 2 and 3 but sold as a focused pack in 4).

The Sims 1 out of the box in 2000 is the better game when compared to The Sims 4 when it was released in 2014. It has been almost 10 years of them fleshing out the TS4 base game. I think that for a better and fairer comparison, you would have to compare them without DLCs and consider them in the state of their release and the receptions they got at their release so as to remove both nostalgia and recency bias and account for the difference in technologies and it's time-sensitive expectations. There is a reason why so many people turned on the game and EA upon TS4's release... The lack of quality control and bug fixes when they released TS3's last dlc to, in theory, focus on TS4 only to release the game with so many lacking features from its predecessor despite being the newest iteration of the game. The Sims 1 upon its release was a complete functional game that gave you a full experience for the technology of its time. It was a revolutionary game at the time, with great quality from the original music, humor, and challenges that it presented. On the other hand, TS4 was, and arguably still is, a setback for the franchise in that it is more like a hodgepodge of badly implemented ideas than a full game, it manages to feel both lacking and bloated at the same time.

The reason i think ts1 is a better game tbh i think can be summarised very simply: when ts1 released, people weren't disappointed. It came with plenty to do for the time. When ts4 released, and it was stripped down and cartoon-ified and super pg and basically had no personality, people were disappointed, and they continue to be disappointed to this day. The fanbase nowadays is just reluctantly here it feels like, which i think is the major difference. The vibe/atmosphere is just... sad. Any hype and joy is now gone. People are basically just biding their time until either ts5 (which is technically called project rene ughh) or one of these other rival life sims release and it's just kinda depressing ngl

It's quite funny actually. When The Sims 1 came out, I was 9 years old and the adult themes probably weren't exactly appropriate for my age (looking at you birthday cake stripper 😂). And now that I'm older, The Sims 4 feels so juvenile. It irritates me how censored they've made it at the cost of the quirky personality that The Sims franchise is known for; driving my point that The Sims 4 is only successful because of the title of "The Sims" and it's reaping the reward based on an existing reputation. It's nothing like it was meant to be.

EA/Maxis delivering everything to us like a children’s show is indeed patronizing, and I hate it too. That the Sims 4 is rated for teens and up, but is really “safe” enough for kids to play irritates me, not just because other Sims games weren’t like that. Too many things/events/places, etc., are padded now “for the children.” Not everything should be child friendly. If your argument against that is that children need space to be children, well adults need space to be adults too, without having to censor themselves for their kids or somebody else’s kids.

I would also say most Sims players are at minimum, over 21. I am sure there are child and teen players, but very few are litteral minors. And tons are in there 30s if not older. So presenting things to adults like a Nickelodeon skit is rather insulting.

Your footage of the beach vacation lot highlights another thing they did really well in TS1: attention to detail and cross-pack compatibility. That vacation lot had pet beds and pet bowls added to it when they released Unleashed. They thought through that people would want to take their pets on vacation, and modified the existing lots from a different EP to have the items needed. If the same situation existed in TS4 (pets only being able to sleep in pet beds/eat from pet bowls), they'd either bar them from coming on holiday entirely, or it'd be up to you to add pet items into vacation lots yourself. There are obviously some cross-pack features in TS4, but it tends to be limited to interactions or coding existing activities to fit within specific systems (e.g. Seasons festivals). You don't get ambitious stuff like when Makin' Magic had a spell to turn your pet into a human, or make you instantly famous if you had Superstar installed. If TS4 had the level of detail, cohesion, and whimsy TS1 had, your spellcasters from Realm of Magic would probably be able to turn horses human if you had Horse Ranch installed, with a chance of it backfiring and turning them into a centaur or something. Speaking of magic, TS1's magic was so fun because it involved effort, so didn't just feel like a cheat mode, and also involved risk. Okay, the fines were a pittance, but no sims game since Makin' Magic has made you use magic discreetly or face repercussions - RIP The Spellchecker.

I understand what you are saying and have to somewhat disagree. Yes, it does not feel like Sims 4 is a real part of the Sims franchise. But realizing that Maxis had very very little input from players in comparison to Sims 4 and still doesn't give players what they ask for. Ok the LOOK is better, totally agree, but is the trait system they have in 4 actually better than 1? Being as most of the time those traits have absolutely no impact on the sim, I say no. They basically added Bonehilda to the paranormal pack to shut up fans who wanted her, but was it really her? I say no. Realm of Magic is beautiful, but is it really as encompassing as Making Magic? Really, it's not. And there are still things in Sims 1 that are NOT in Sims 4, like alarm clocks. It's not just the humor, what is the actual goal of Sims 4? It's not an aspiration, you can change those, so how is that different from Sims 1 without having a goal? You made your own goal, just like in Sims 4. Peel off the paint and there is really not much difference in a lot of it but considering that in Sims 1 the sims are mostly stuck on their lot but things still HAPPEN, fire was practically a character in Sims 1. And really Sims 1 babies was in Sims 4, seriously? I mean SERIOUSLY? And what's sad and scarey are the things in Sims 1 that should not be features but are not in Sims 4, like the alarm clocks but there are more. How is that possible after all those packs and all these years of Sims 4? How does my sims feel more unique in Sims 1 than Sims 4, without cc? Overall, the Sims 1 was a GAME and Sims 4 was created more for "storytelling" than playing a game, they ALWAYS say about telling a story, but they don't talk about playing a game. Maybe that's the real difference, it's hard to really put your finger on it. But the real goal of Sims 1 was to do as much as you could while keeping your sim alive because that was work itself. The humor now, I don't feel like 4 is goofy and fun, I feel like they threw us a bone each time there is something "funny". And yes, their livestreams are not just geared towards kids they are downright looking at us in disdain, like they think we're stupid and childish, everyone of us. My nieces said that! The livestreams from Sims 2 and 3 (though not as many) were enthusiatic and fun not because they had to hire an actress to play a part but because they were totally into the game and wanted to show it to us. Not any more. And for Sims 1 all we had was a disc from Making Magic telling us about Sims 2. You say in every video how there is nothing in the worlds to do, so how is it so great that we have so many world that are beautiful and unique that do nothing for us? I'd rather be stuck in a lot like Sims 1 and 2. I do have to say that Sims 1 actually had active career for becoming a celebrity, that was the first and it was more in depth than Sims 4. But really, other than the live careers, what is more in depth in the jobs in Sims 4 than Sims 1? Sims 1 at least had a car come pick them up not just disappear off the lot. Being as Sims 1 was the first, lol, I should hope it feels like The Sims, but that is kinda the point a lot of players have. Sims 4 does not feel like a SIMS game, it doesn't measure up to a lot of things in Sims 1, graphics and larger set for scenery (that you can't do anything with) don't make 4 better. I will give equal in a lot of ways, but I can't make myself say that on a whole 4 is BETTER than 1. Just can't do it.

@@oceanegougeon3025This!! It seems like a lot of Sims 4 expansion packs are mini games to 'add to your game'. HSY for example came with a neighborhood (I refuse to call them 'worlds') focused on High School it basically wanted you to integrate your Sims into this one specific HSY world instead of expanding the overall game and existing worlds with High School. Same with Cats and Dogs. In Sims 2 every neighborhood I easily integrated pets into, in Sims 4 Briddleton Bay was gorgeous but again this lovely pet park and vet area are basically 'the vet' for everyone in every 'world' (town/neighborhood) and not easily backwards intergrateable into the game family I am already playing on other maps. Many of the packs seem like bottle experiences, not game expanders. If I already have 3 generations of a family playing their life out in the Newcrest I built up from scratch over a long period, while I love having new maps I want to EXPAND their life there, not start over for the sake of 'playing' with the new pack. I don't want to play 'packs', I want to use them to expand the story I am already playing in and playing out in Sims.

I just think the Sims 4 looks nice (graphics) and is suitable for building beautiful buildings or CAS. But I no longer enjoy playing with the Sims figures themselves. And in general after building for an hour in de sims4 I'm bored. Most of te time I like it more to watch others play and build in youtube video's then playing the game myself. I really had to get used to it when I switched from Sims 1 in my youth.... to the Sims 4 years later. It is indeed not what it used to be anymore. Such a pity. And the background music and sounds from for example the television in the game at the time was also legendary lol.... I miss the stuff in sims 1 because it had more to do especially with making magic. They have to do better. They need to take notes from sims 1 2 and 3 I hope it gets better in the future. 🤦🏽‍♀️ #EA #Sims4

I have to say, for me, sims 1 is the better game. When I played the game, I would spend maybe 10 minutes in character development, then the rest of the time playing the game. I would play for an hour or so, and actually do things. Making my family, then playing in the magic world. Playing with the other sims in the game. Sims 4 I spend so much time in character development, and barely any in actual game play.

Objectively, TS1 had better gameplay and more content. The only aspects TS4 is better at is visual stuff (CAS, graphics) and mainstream appeal.

If you compare a FIFA of around 2014-2016 with FIFA 2001, you have a clear answer of which game is the best. It's funny how for The Sims it's still something to debate which one is better.

It's become a cash grab; hence splitting features between more stand alone addons and expansion packs. You could fit 5 sims 4 expansion and stuff pack features and items into each sims 1 expansion.

Wow my memory is really off. I could have sworn that The Sims came out in the late 90s and not in 2000 😂 I'm too dang old lol. They made the Sims 4 for the snowflakes. Plus, there are SO MANY missed opportunities that the sims team could put certain items into packs. Like how are you going to put a tavern in Horse Ranch and not put a billiards table? Or put that in another big EP like City Living, University or something that involves the bars a bit. Also, where can you even get the Sims 1 and the EPs now? I'm scared to just download something random without knowing if it is legit and virus free or not.

EA is just so dumb. Their businesses practices speak to greed yet they failed hard when they didn’t release an updated complete sims 1 collection on the 20th anniversary. There is clearly plenty of people that still want to play it and would pay for the simplicity of an updated version they can download install and enjoy vs researching if their machine can use work arounds to run their old discs or finding an older machine to play it on as well as having space for those beasts to exist. Even laptops back then were monsters. Nah, give them a shitty hot tub and make an entire stuff packs purpose worthless and insult everyone who bought that DLC before the free hot tub was patched in for the anniversary… Just wow. Seriously how often can a company get a fan base to buy an outdated game. To profit off an old launch title *a second time*. It blows my mind they continue to pass it up.

I feel this comparison is not fair, hear me out: When comparing TS1 and TS4 people need to keep in mind that the amount of effort spent on each pack for their generation is vastly different. Like, if we assume that maxis/EA is using the same amount of resources for both games (as in staff members, time, money), of course they could make much more gameplay for TS1 than they could for TS4. TS1 graphics were quite simple to make (mostly due to hardware limitations at the time) - however each 3D model for TS4 has much more details, more polygons, more colors and they also add so much more furniture for your home than what you got in TS1 (ex: kitchen appliances and cabinets). In TS1 you mostly got new gameplay objects with each pack, but for other stuff in your household you still had to work with base game furniture. And there weren't any colour swatches, so not a lot of options to combine different kinds of furniture. The technical aspect is also very different in each generation. I'm not an expert in this topic, but from what I can tell, TS1 had it's own challenges (ex: they had to make each pack fully functional by launch, because there wasn't a game launcher which could install bug fix patches for the player from the internet. The game had to work offline too. They would either have to manually install downloaded patches or buy the next expansion pack, as that would include bug fixes for previous packs). TS1 could also easily be corrupted, because almost everything in there was hard coded. On the other side, the game's mechanics were simplified enough, so you while adding new gameplay features, there were less obstacles to work with. Right now I can only think of small things like path finding: In TS1 it was clear for the player that Sims couldn't walk through a door if another sim or an object was blocking that door. In real life you could probably find a way to squeeze in between a small space, but in TS1 this wasn't possible. The player knew when placing an object: The green highlighted space around the object is where my Sim can't walk through, so I need to make the room big enough so they can walk around it. In TS4 they need to pay attention to so many little things to make it feel like a modern game (but even then the game feels dated, because the engine is 10 years old lol). Sticking to the pathfinding example: In TS4 Sims are very flexible when manoeuvring around objects and other sims. Yes, sometimes they phaze through walls and sims and it looks stupid, but this is a bug that happens with extremely tight spaces (either in a tiny room or if the room is too crowded). Most of the time the Sims do a pretty good job at path finding. That gives you a lot of freedom in placing objects with the bb.moveobjects cheat code activated while still keeping them fully functional. The developers are making that possible for each object they add through DLCs. Conclusion: Producing TS4 DLCs needs soooo much more work compared to TS1. More staff, more time, more coding effort, more design, modelling and animation effort, the list goes on. It makes sense that the newer packs will become smaller with less gameplay comparatively, or else we would only get one DLC per year for 50 Dollars or more. At this time I also feel like expansion packs are too expensive initially, but on sales with 50-75% off it's a good deal (at least that's what I do, I never get the packs shortly after launch). I would never pay more than 25 dollars on a DLC. I'm also not a great fan of EA and their shenanigans of shitting out buggy games on launch thanks to pressuring their staff with tight deadlines. It's disgusting that this is what we have to deal with nowadays. Yet I don't feel it's completely fair to say a 23 year old game is better because there was a lot of crazy stuff to do while the technical effort behind creating the game was so much simpler than what the current generation has to work with. About the argument on TS1 "feeling" like a better sims game - yeah, I guess I can see where you're coming from. But I feel this might be due to the fact that many people from back then did work on TS2 and TS3 as well, but they got a lot of new staff for TS4. It's a generational and cultural issue, I think. Different people have different priorities and ideas.

What all this misses is with The Sims they were doing a little a lot of things for the literal first time. Graphics aside, the actual game execution was fairly complex. They also were playing with a lot of different ideas before they landed on The Sims in the format for which is was delivered, that in and of itself took more time. Also, no one believed it would actually work which changed the amount of time put into every feature of the game. Will Wright had to make/prove a full sellable product. A lot of the base of what the Sims is (the simlish, how they interact with their homes, the autonomy A.I. etc.) did not exist and was invented in Sims original during the development process from, again, NOTHING. Expansions weren't really 'planned' so much for Sims 1, no one believed the game would actually SELL as just a game. Will Wright was literally shopping the game. He couldn't fall back on any proven sales. At the time EA were mostly funding Maxis, it wasn't there cash cow. In a way you could say expansions, even for Sims 1, were invented as a result of popularity to keep the game hype up. But while you can argue there are things harder to code due to more complex modern systems, you could also argue they are easier to code due to easier build from the past history. A CAS kit takes very little effort cause there are models to build from. And when it comes to expansions (and now game and even stuff packs), 3 games of history to pick and pull ideas from. Even with the better graphics, it's way easier to throw out a whole expensive pack based on ONE gameplay feature from the past because the models and systems to build from exist. Because Sims 1 had no past to build from AND had to do a lot for the first time ever, it was far harder. Seasons was supposed to be in base game of Sims 2, it just didn't work so they pushed it to a pack. Making it a pack in Sims 3 and 4, however, was just based on the fact that 'well in the past, it was a pack....so pack again'. A big once a year Sims 4 pack packed with all the micro packs they pushed out all year, a pack they thoroughly tested for a YEAR, that is $50 bucks actually does sound better than the cash-grabby micro pack system they have now. Also, scrappy little pet project Maxis run by Will Wright probably had less of EA's support then 'we know we're going to make billions on this' shell company of Modern Maxis. At this point Maxis exist in name only and is more hands on run by EA.

Graphics means nothing to asethetic. If it has polygons and needs a high end pc to run, doesnt mean it looks better especially if the art direction and style of the game is off high end sprites and the right view. I find 4 to look ugly and lifeless, sims is full of charm and warmth in everything made. Dont defend a corporation with such a boring take

In 4 years and 4 months you won't be able to say that Sims 1 is more of a Sims experience anymore - as between The Sims 4 and whatever monstrosity Project René becomes, the Sims will have been that for more time than TS1-TS3 combined.

@@adrianblake8876 if they were disciplined, maybe, but this is EA. There is a strong chance they would just stop making it and move on. They didnt have to give up on Sim City. They could have come back, put an honest effort in, made a game that could compete with Citirs: Skylines and still pull a modest profit. They opted not to because they can make easy money selling lottery tickets in Ultimate Team mode in their sports games. If players across the board had such discipline then I think EA would be forced to put out decent products, but they make their money off overpriced microtransactions and there are other markets for such tomfoolery.
