Comparing Two Minecraft Guardian Farms (Java 1.16.5 - 1.20+)

Күн бұрынIn this Minecraft survival tutorial video I will build the two most popular types of Guardian Farms: a quick one hour build that uses Nether Portals and another that requires draining the entire area and then building a water tank and kill chamber. Which one will produce more items? Time to settle all bets.

Thanks to DontRunWithScissors / @scissorsdont in the comments, I realized I setup the storage system on my farm with lava item disposal instead of catching all the items. In a 5 minute AFK test, the system caught 96 items that missed the hoppers. That brings the adjusted total for the second guardian farm (my design) to 19,551 items per 35 minutes or 33,516 items per hour.

any reason why the first farm doesnt work at all for me on java? everything is correct and right is there a exact spot where the afk platform has to be or just in the middle?

I prefer your farm over the easy one as well. I think it looks better, that and I have a lot of nether portals and I keep running into them linking up with other areas of my server. (and I'm totally not just saying this because I cleared out an ocean monument before figuring out that I don't need to... totally 100%)

Maybe try placing string around the top of the farm for group spawns to be possible, will make the farm a lot more efficient

5x5 square grids work better when draining out using sponges instead of 7x7. Uses less sponges per cell to drain out. Instant drying in the nether so have a portal nearby.

I can say that this farm works great (2nd one), especially on a smp where somethings are different from vanilla. But what I would want for a tutorial is to be a bit more detailed on the important parts. In this case I am talkinb about building the kill chambers, as I didn't realize you had to dig a block deeper and place my four droppers a block too high and had to restart. Otherwise this farm tutorial is great.

I like your video, nice mood and good explanation of what you're doing. Would you recommend the sponge method to drain the ocean monument if you knew that you can easily dry wet sponges in the nether? Just place them, they're instantly dry.

Greqt design, very clean and functional. I like to use gravel walls on top of fences and a flying machine to remove water. The perk to the fence is when you drain the water you just have to break the first gravel block and the rest break as they fall. Gravel alone works, but you go through a lot of shovels or you spend a lot of exp fixing them. I also make a mob grinder under my monuments, item sorting system and storage around the perimeter, and I put a village and iron farm on top. One day I hope to find a monument with a slime chunk... the search continues.

I have actually had one I believe. Was clearing out the monument and saw slimes so I’m pretty sure I have a slime chunk in my monument.

7:54 you can better make 4x4 block squares and dry the sponges in the nether. it is way easier.

Since I play on a server that doesn't really like to have many mobs in nether when you're in the overworld so you need 2 players for it to work, I will build your farm and see how it does

I recommend changing the area below the drop chute according to what is shown in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bquRgKx1m7iXiGg.html But it requires lots of Splash Potions of Damage because Guardians have a Thorns-like ability that makes them difficult to use for XP, which is a major reason I didn't make this an XP farm.

Loved your design, very easy to build and the results are very good! I prefer having my loot in the overworld so the second design was the best choice (also i already had cleared an ocean monument so i decided to use it). I have a question: being at the afk tower, what is the render distance and simulation distance recommended for the best results? I usually play in 12 for both, but using some farms i tend to lower them. Idk if this farm requires a lower or higher render/simulation distance. Thanks!

Thanks! When I recorded this I was typically setting mine at 15 - 16 chunks. But if the AFK platform is directly over the farm then lower settings should still work.

I had tried to do one with soul sand ages ago but the lag was so bad myself and all my friends were trapped and had to warp out. Then I had the fun of taking it all up without getting too close. I didn't know what else to do til I saw this. I'm going with the tower.

I think that first one was a Cortezerino design like you said. He's done several of them over the years trying to improve on the concept with each of them.

I remembered that I built another one of his guardian farms a couple years ago that was so powerful I couldn’t build storage fast enough to collect the items. He’s really the guardian farm master!

@@dudieboy also, not sure if you tried it, one of the ways to get items past the slabs (doesn't always work) is to use packed Ice or even blue ice as the block under the water stream. That speed up the travel of the items and usually pushes them past the slab.

Good design, working well on my multiplayer server. Question though... is there a reason you use campfires in addition to the drop? I would think a far enough fall would be sufficient to kill them and the fires unnecessary?

Glad to hear you got it working! I added campfires after testing this design first in a creative world. In that test I saw a few times where Guardies fall 30 blocks to what should have been an instant death, but instead flop around on the hoppers for several minutes. Not sure what causes this, landing on other Guardies, maybe? That’s why I added the campfires, to finish them off quickly.

I know this is necro....but on the second farm shown, I constantly had an issue with the guardians getting stuck in the "hallway" from the chamber over to the drop. the first block was too "tall". I swapped out the entire hallway with pressure plates and worked out well for me...downside is the annoying clicking on the plates, but overall farm rates have improved.. :D In case this helps anyone going forward :)

Regarding the first design, I recreated it in a creative world first to make sure I can make it and it is working much slower than expected unless I misunderstand you in the video. Does the whole design in the nether need to be inside of one chunk for it to work or something? I'm kind of at a loss. It's working, guardians are spawning and going into the portal but I'm getting measly gains at like 45 crystals in 20 minutes per chest. That doesn't seem right. Also, is y 170 high enough for the platform? I'm cautious about going too high because I prefer to build bubble elevators up to my afk platforms and it's a lot of work. Thanks for your help.

The bubble column you mention would have to be built well away from the farm as that would add extra spawnable spaces, so frankly I would not recommend it. Switch from creative to survival and make sure you're standing at least 25 blocks from the farm for testing purposes. For the first design you don't want the AFK platform any higher because the top few layers of water -- and only top few -- must be within 128 blocks of the AFK point.

Drying sponges doesn't require fuel, you can place them down in the Nether and pick them back up again :P

It raises the Guardies above sea level so that new ones can spawn faster, so you might lose some efficiency.

This is a common question and yes it’s possible. I’ve shared a link in other comments to a gnembon video, please look for that. I personally think Guardians are the worst form of XP because of the damage but I guess that’s just me. 😆

The second design seems to throw out ink sacs, fish, etc. which could be why it has less items than the first

Hello again! I replaced the lava disposal block in my mass storage system with a hopper and AFK'ed it again for 5 minutes. While I did not get any ink sacs or fish like you did, the overflow system did catch a stack and a half of items. So this was a pretty significant error I made and difference in setup, since the first farm didn't have disposal. This is an additional 672 items per 35 minutes! If I'd setup the storage correctly when recording this would have brought the total to 19,551 items/35 minutes or 33,516 items per hour. I'm going to add this to the description. Many thanks!

in my survival base i would like to make this cause the design is both usefull and pretty (in looks) so i was wondering what y-level i should raise it to if im all the way at bedrock

The Guardians only spawn from the level of the Ocean Monument base up to sea level, so it needs to be at Y39 or 40 and up, and within the Ocean Monument’s area. And, thank you! :)

As long as you build the AFK platform in the right spot, and no other player approaches within 25 blocks of the farm, multiplayer should work.

Thanks! It's a previous version of BSL. Shouldn't need a file, the only change I usually make is to adjust the Color > Lighting settings for each time of day to an intensity below 1.

I built the second one after watching this video (for appearances and bragging rights over absolute max output I'll fully admit) But it won't work from the AFK tower, which I put at the height you said to. Y=156. It is on a Paper server. 1.18.1. Maybe that makes a difference? Similar designs I've found don't have the AFK tower. It does work from the killing/collection area which I put a couple blocks lower than you said to

So I checked out your world download and your AFK platform is actually at Y=152 not 156 like you said in the video. Seems to work a lot better at 152.

The download world isn’t the same as the world in the video, I copied the Guardian farm over to that world in pieces and the killing floor wound up pasting in at a lower Y level, so I had to lower the platform to get it working again. I’ll look at my original world and get the Y values of the platform and killing floor for you, but the important measurement is that the hoppers below the campfires be 127 blocks below the platform.

@@dudieboy So that would have been my problem as well since I put the killing floor a bit lower. I figured the important dimension would be the difference between the spawning tanks and the platform. Would lowering the floor and tower like this affect output? I wanted to make sure the drop would kill all the guardians without campfires. Though I'm not concerned about absolute max output. I want to be server friendly and I only need so much. I'm going to rebuild the collection system today. I threw it together with a few chests and no sorter, I'm going to implement your system.

Do they despawn before hitting the floor if the tower is a bit too high then?

@@Raccoon1400 The drop damages them but might not kill all of them for reasons I don't understand. The campfires finish them off quickly, and in any mob farm the point is to kill mobs quickly so the next ones spawn faster. The tutorial was helpful, but I think you're severely undervaluing sponges when it comes to draining the monument. For one, it usually only takes me about 20-25 sponges to clear out a 6x6 section of water. Unless you got unlucky and only got 20 from the monument, that's not that many. Also, wet sponges that are placed in the nether will instantly dry, meaning they don't take fuel.

20 - 25 to clear out a 6x6? dang, I just drained one and only had 28 sponges to my name and did a 5x5 spot and just ran a dirt and sponge pillar down the center averaging maybe 5 or 6 sponges to empty a cell. dirt bridge to the center then sponge dirt dirt sponge all the way down.

Is it possible to make the kill area 1 block higher and turn it into an xp farm?

Yes, but you’ll need water to keep them from jumping around and a way to block their beams from hitting you. Drop them through two separate levels of lava to get their health down, and you’ll need mending armor and some way to regenerate health lost to their thorns. They’re not the easiest XP source, that’s why I didn’t cover it.

This is a very late comment but after I logged off of my server and logged back in the next day, I wasn't getting any drops and I couldn't figure out what I did wrong. I was wondering if you could help or at least explain if I wasn't supposed to log off? Edit: Actually nvm lol. I just placed a portal too close to the farm and they linked up with each other, messing the portal transportation up.

So i did the world download, and went afk for 30 minutes, and got exactly 53 prismarine... idk why but not a lot seem to be spawning, and as I said this is in the world you provide, i didn't build it myself, so im not sure what's up?

If you're asking me if you tested it correctly, the answer is probably not. :) I tested my world download for you in 1.19.2 and it's fine. I cleaned out the chests and then went AFK on the AFK platform for 30 minutes, and here's what I got. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i6-HgZWbsK3Sk6M.html

@@dudieboy Omg im so sorry, I must have missed the part where you have to stand on a platform in the sky, I thought it seemed odd that this worked without blocking spawns, but thought maybe Guardians spawned independent of the global mob cap. That makes sense now XD sorry for wasting your time ♥

I did the first farm because It's more than enough for a solo player like me. But I've noticed that the guardians get stuck on the corners of the nether portal. Any way to fix this without breaking the farm?

When you’re in the afk spot the guardians should knock each other in the portal and maintain the efficiency. If that’s not the case, you might try redoing the water streams. Make sure you’re not putting water in the corners of the frame, just one on the corner fence gate. Can’t suggest more without taking a look but hope it helps. 👍

Hey, i build the second design and at first it worked very well. but suddenly a day later not a single guardian spawns now. the area surrounding is spawnproofed. the afk platform ist not more than 128 block away and lightlevel in the tanks is at 0. i have build a foghole around the farm and now it just not spawning even though I changed nothing on the farm itself nor the tanks. whats the problem?

@@dudieboy single player. Also when I /locate it doesnt locate the monument where the farm is . A foghole is a 16 blocks deep hole with a lightsource at the bottom and a layer of glass every w blocks

@@thorbenhinzmann Did you import this world from 1.17 to 1.18.0? I myself had an incident during world import that Minecraft moved the monument bounding box so that Guardies were not spawning there anymore. If so I’m not sure what to do except try importing a 1.17 backup of your world into 1.18.1 as they made a lot of fixes to world import, I think. My farm broke when I imported to a 1.18 snapshot but works fine in 1.18.1

Make sure your AFK platform is in the right spot, 128 blocks above the campfires. Otherwise I’d have to see your build somehow.

i really loved your design just one question can i make the farm little bit lower i mean the top of it in y lvl 61 also can i make 4 portal in middle so guardian can go through and make killing chamber in nether? the reason why im doing is bc i wanna keep the monument as its just transform it to musuem and make guardian farm part of it

Might be less efficient. The point of raising the Guardies above sea level is some tend to try swimming back down and wind up not dying as quickly. But because they’re above the monument’s bounding box, more Guardies spawn and knock them into the drop chute. If the top is below sea level, fewer Guardies might spawn, might not knock the old Guardies into the center… ripple effect.

i made the second design in a public smp and i didnt remove the monument but it became much less efficient is this because of the monument, or is it because of the mobcap most likely

The important part is draining the water from the area as shown in the video. This focuses the spawns within the small water tanks. If you didn't drain all the water then you'll lose efficiency.

@@Fakecho The bounding box of the Monument stops at its floor and no guardians should spawn below it, so that isn't necessary. I'm afraid I don't know the answer to this, except to say that deviating from what's presented in the tutorial could produce variable results. I bet someone like Gnembon could figure that out!

If that’s turned off on your server somehow then I think you would need another player or camera account standing on the Nether side when the guardies come through. But normally it should be fine, the Nether chunks should load when items/entities go through.

So, I built the first farm in my minecraft world and when i went to afk for the first time, TONNES of piglins spawned near the middle of the nether portals in the overworld despite the nether portal in the nether being covered by glass like in the video, the portals arent linked to any of my other ones so what's happening?? (Also i'm using normal difficulty)

Do you mean Piglins or Zombie Piglins? Either way I don't understand how they wouldn't get washed right back into the portal and pushed back into the Nether.

I made the second farm on a server I play on with some friends and I'm wondering if anyone can help me with a problem I'm having. I've afked overnight two times now, and both nights, I got about 70k prismarine shards but less than 3k prismarine crystals. I know crystals are supposed to be much more common than that but I don't know what's happening to all of them. I've checked the kill chamber, droppers/hoppers, water line, and my filtered storage system and everything is how it should be (no clogging of any sort).

In the world DL I used two sorting columns for each item type, that helps if the hoppers are full. Also, maybe add a catch-all column instead of a lava disposal block, that can help too

I built the water tanks up to sea level, Y62, so that when the Guardies get pushed to the top new ones can spawn faster in the tanks.

Hmm, strange that you’re getting low numbers, if your AFK platform was too far from the collection hoppers then that’s easy to solve. If you lit up surrounding caves and the Ocean Monument was not close to land, then I’m not sure what other troubleshooting we could do. Could you provide a world download?

Sorry, I'm on a server, I can't provide a world download... My AFK platform is located at Y180, it makes the deepest soulsand blocks the last where guardians can spawn. I could torch the surrounding cave I guess but still, I'm getting very low ressources...
