Comparison between Shure V15 II Shure V15 III Cartridge
Just as a point of interest The V/15 Type cartridge's were one of the best in its day ..I like to use the same era of cartridge's with in a few years with my Garrard 301..Also as I have said before in my Videos ..The Shure V15-II used to belong to my Father and it has been around most of my life !!!!

There is such a huge difference in the output of both cartridges. The louder cartridge will necessarily appear to sound better. You need to level match the gain of both cartridges before comparison.

I think the lower output cartridge actually sounds more pleasant. I tried to make level adjustments on my playback while you were changing them. The louder output cartridge has more of the inner groove distortion with all of the instruments, in my opinion. Very interesting comparison. Thank you for sharing.

Great comparison, I compensated the level, and I am going with the type III. it has a more open sound, actually more dynamic, and overall more musical. In these comparisons, the ear tends to favor the louder sound. The quality of sound is decent on my pro monitors, even over the internet.

It simply means that the output level of the cell V15 II is higher than that of V15III

Even though this test is extremely flawed, I found the type 3 the better or more musical of this comparison. Build wise, the type 3 should be superior to the type 2.

the shure v15II has clearly about 2mv higher output than the shure v15III ... I like very much the open sound of the v15 II ...!

The SAS stylus has more detail/soundstage etc, but also more surface noise. "Best" is what you like the most, as the the varying comments prove. Thanks for the demo.

I agree ... Type II musical ... I pulled on a used one on Ebay. I still love my Type IIIs on my Marantz 6300 and vintage Dual CHANGER.

I can say one of those has an higher volume no more. Both reproduce same performance of audio. I can not notice another difference between these two stylus II and III.

I like the one from the shorter tone arm because it's louder. The model of your turntable Garrard Model 301 is clearly readable on your video. I Google it and those images only have one tone arm while yours have two :)

It would be great to compare using same cartridges with the your 2 different arms too, as I am yet to be convinced that these arms can make significant differences.

Congratulations on the wonderful turntable. I have a model 3 capsule I will buy a model 2 and also make comparisons my amp is not as good as yours. have a ONKYO M504 and boxes are MIRAGE. VIDEO VERY GOOD A FRIEND IN BRAZIL.

The V15II definately is the one with the higher output...I have one and love it...have you ever tried the Ortofon 2m Blue.it is wonderful and has a Nude stylus

PS subscribed. I remember picking up a lovely 301 along with an EMI EPU 100 unipivot and cartridge (Decca type generator) for 40 quid in South Croydon...Aaaaarrghh WHY can't we still do those things...

II seemed with clearer, richer and deeper tone but somwhat distorted(at the beginnig with the voice) in comparsion to III, bit i guess jico SAS makes all the difference :)

Not fair at all! Must be the Jico!! At least switch styluses and repeat? Easy to do and should provide much more info.

I've mounted an SC35C stylus on an M44MB cartige ( both are Shure) I've gained in dynamics with the SC35C stylus compared to the stock stylus of the M44MB. I've obtained the same results with the SC35C stylus mounted on an M75 Shure cartige .

The type II is louder than the III, but the fidelity comparison can't be made on my laptop speakers, they sound the same from here.

Is the huge difference in quality mainly due to the SAS vs non-SAS stylus or the Type II (top) just being a much better cartridge than the Type III (bottom)?

Thanks for the comparison. I wonder why the V15 ii is significantly better sounding than the V15 iii on the long arm. And the output seems higher from the ii. Is it mainly because of the Jico SAS stylus?

Too bad that the 2 carts are not at the same volume. The Type 3 should be the better sounding cartridge, but in this presentation the Type 2 is the preferred cartridge.

I think there is something wrong either with the V15iii or the 2nd Mac input. There is at least a 10 db level difference..So if one cartridge is giving the required 3.5 mV, the other is either giving 10 mV or 1mV.. I think it averaged more than 10 db, so maybe worse figures. The stylus type can't change output this dramatically. As far as I know they both had a spec. around 3.5 mV? I think the iii has a dodgy generator?

I agree. I wonder if the vintage Mac preamp has adjustable output levels for one or both phono inputs?

I'm hearing lots of distortion in the percussions and in general. Is there something wrong with the alignment? If my turntables sounded that way I would not sleep until I find a way to make them sound right. Or it's just youtube compression or record wear ...

That distortion is almost definitely from the record which may also be a bit worn from use. A lot of vinyl from the 60s sounded characteristically harsh and lacking bass.

This is fun, but I have to wonder whether the two different phono inputs have each got different impedance. The two cartridges have substantially different amounts of gain (I can see several dB of difference on my Lynx Hilo meters). Otherwise, it isan interesting test, thank you!

The jico stylus was better. You could have swapped the stylus between the cartridges and edited the video to make the comparison.

Where did you get the idea the SAS stylus wears out faster? Actually it's opposite. Because they are fine line styluses a much greater area of the stylus is in contact with the groove wall thus making them wear out significantly slower than elliptical.

Louder always sounds better, tho the high end and dynamics imparted by that SAS definitely give it the edge. Amazing Thorens and love the plinth base!

+Adolph Oliver Bush Both brands made good sounding decks...about the Shure story ...........l always and still liked and loved the musicality of the Shure V15 III ..........the IV was claimed to be more and better perfoming but something so easy and coherent .........and simply musical was in favor of the III, it sounded so balanced and spontaneous without trying to perform out of balance with one or another quality............just a winner , listening with a cigar in your favoured chair ...and let the music speak and flow..without posing any questions ..just listen and forget about hifi !!!

It has an higher output that many perceive as better. But the type III has less distortion at higher amplitudes. Both are nice cartridges.

On the short arm , the bass are deeper and the hights are more clear , output level is highter than the cartige on the long arm , the sound seems to be muffled . For a better test , both arms must be the same size , in the long arm , the wiring is longer and its plays on the capacity an impedence of the phono input , that can modify the quality of the sound .

thank you, that was amusing and interesting that you could hear that much difference (coming form a non audiophile)! I just inherited a Type III (and a VN-35E which I believe in only the stylus, right?) and AKG P8ES. Have you got anything to say about the latter?

Obviously there are quite a bit of variables but to my ears through KZfaq streamed into a Tivoli model one the short arm 3009 with the Shure V15ii is clearer and more robust. I think you just want to show off your turntable!
