Ortofon’s top ellipticals moving magnet cartridges.
Prior to the release of the M15E cartridge (1969), Ortofon only produced Moving Coil cartridges.
The M15E and M15E Super (1973) are moving magnet cartridges, but Ortofon replaced the heavy, solid magnet with a thin magnetic tube that fit over the end of the cantilever. Similar to Empire’s magnetic cone, the moving element was significantly lighter than the standard solid magnet. This design was used in all of Ortofon’s “VMS” moving magnet models. The Ortofon elliptical stylus was introduced in 1964 and claimed to “add a new dimension to sound recreation”. It was used in their top models until the 1980’s when other stylus shapes were available.
