Although I have never compared the AT 740 to the Rigby version of the 740 the Rigby is declared to be a certain improvement over the stock version. I have the Rigby version and the v15mr with the stock stylus. I’m not sure which I like best. I did buy the jico replacement with the boron-aluminum stylus and loved it until I accidentally hit the back of the tone arm and the cartridge flew across the record and believe it or no it broke off the tip of the diamond, sounds impossible but it happened. $270 shot.

It was not easy to decide which one sounded better. But I think I preferred the AT150Sa.... I think? 😀

The Signet cartridge has higher surface noise. But I experience the sound more naturally compared to Ortofon. Ortofon sounds more Hifi. Ortofon seems a bit more forgiving, but I would probably choose the Signet.

I think Audio Technica sounds better, more natural, more enjoyable to listen to. Audio Technica cartridges tend to be on the bright, slightly energetic side and for me it can be too much sometimes. But not this one, very good. Shure sounded to me, typical Shure, never sharp or too sharp, but too veiled in comparison to AT. I would choose AT.

I found the Audio-Technica to be cleaner and more defined, with the sax sounding much more enjoyable. But if I hadn't heard them both I would be satisfied with the other cartridge.

You should equate the AT with the 2MBlack LVB, and still it will win hands down at 1/2 the price.

I am lucky enough t to have this cartridge. I brought it back in the mid 90’s. It still sounds incredible. Unfortunately there are no more replacement stylus for it. Re-tipping I was told is not a great option.

I'd agree that the Shure sounded more life like and clear. I have multiple V-15's and when my OEM VN5MR wears out, I'll be getting this same stylus from Jico. IMHO I've always found Shure V-15's to be superior of many other models and brands back in the day.

Ever notice how EVERY vinyl phonograph phonograph record yku see on KZfaq is warped? If the rise and fall of the cartridge isn't noticeable look at the reflections in the record. There should no changes as the record spins.

@@markfischer3626 That is Certainly replacement the Shure V-15 V MR. That stylus is $500 from Jico. It's a super Analog Stylus with a Boron cantilever and a Micro Ridge Crystal Diamond.

Thanks for the comparison video. I have the 888VE and the 1000ZE/X, and I prefer the cleaner, more balanced presentation of the 1000ZE/X.

Surprising, the 1000ZE sounds a little more lively., I love the Empire cartridge's full bodied and energetic house sound. The record label looks like a Decca or London, who's ninth is this ? Never mind, I looked at the description.

Hi, I have a Ortofon OM cartridge fitted with a 5E stylus. Is it possible to upgrade with OM10 or 20 stylus to that cartridge. Also have a Ortofon Concorde Mk1 fitted with a 5E, same question regarding this upgrade to OM10 or 20 stylus. I got these cartridges with a turntable I just bought. Thanks.

The Signet's tone is smooth and sweet, whereas the Ortofon is harsh and steely. It's true that the Ortofon is "more detailed." This is a byproduct of its tipped-up treble response.

AM10 seem warmer. 2M Blue more precise. Both have their positive points. That said if you didn't have these side by side the difference is small and I think it would be 2M Blue for me because while I do like this type of music also I listen to all kinds of music and the music I mainly listen is more suited to 2M Blue. That said if you had both and quick change depending of music would be great. It would be great to see the real comparison for the AM20 because these have the same type of stylus "Nude Elliptical".
