About Sanford And Son: The highest-rated half-hour series in NBC history at the time, Sanford and Son stars Redd Foxx as the cantankerous sexagenarian Fred Sanford and Demond Wilson as his son Lamont, also his business partner in the family junk-dealing business. To prevent his son from leaving home, and bent on having things his own way in general, Fred often calls upon such ruses as fake heart attacks or phony back ailments. Lamont usually sees through these subterfuges, but because he loves his father, he lets him think he's getting his way.

You must not have been around in the '70s. The show was extremely popular, most of the time it was on, number two, close behind number one (All in the Family) and at number Three. Also, Redd Fox did standup and made more than 50 popular comedy albums.

Fred mentioning hiz dead friend owing him $9.47. made me think of this guy I knew who once mentioned a friend he went to a funeral for. my parents said they were sorry about the loss. he said not to worry about it. he died owing him $20.

The difference in the shows of today is Redd Foxx made it look natural. It was like it was real and not a show. And it was truly done live in front of an audience. Not a laugh track. Show was way ahead of its time. Came out in 1972.. 50 years ago and still stands up today.
