In this care guide for the American bull frog, I'll go over everything I do to take care of my American bull frog, Lucille. Lucille is now four years old and he's thriving in his paludarium that closely mimics the pond's edge where this frog might be found in the wild. I hope you enjoy the video.

I recently took in an abandoned bullfrog tadpole. I dont expect him to a frog soon but on the off chance that he decides over the summer to became a frog I'm trying to make sure I'm prepared. Luckily I have empty 40 and 75 tanks on hand which is half the solution. Thanks for the helpful video!

You’re welcome. Good luck with him. I’ve never raised a frog from a tadpole, but I think it would be awesome to watch them morph and come out of the water as a froglet.. 😀

Similar to how I got mine. It came into petco with the feeders, and I claimed it for free lol

I have a good solid base of education with the six African clawed frogs I have, but the bullfrogs are still a bit different. I’m just excited, I always wanted a bullfrog but didn’t want a wild caught one.

Thanks, I’m really glad you enjoyed it. I have considered moving him into something larger like a 150 gallon or something, but I really like where he is now.

I just rescued a big male bullfrog from a wet market 3 days ago. He's about as "tame" as a bullfrog to be, but in that same sense, he doesn't do much, he just swims around a bit. He hasn't eaten anything I've offered yet, and his tank is still being fully set up. All he has at the moment is a big rock, some water, and a gentle heat lamp while I fix the old rock filter and get some gravel substrate. This helped give me an idea of what else I should do in the tank, and thankfully I still have plenty of moss and coconut husk substrate from when I set up my salamander enclosure, so he'll have the works first thing tomorrow

That sounds awesome. I’d be careful with the heat lamp though.

They shed (and eat the skin) every 1 to 2 weeks. I had no idea.

Yes. All frogs do. They usually wait and do it in the dark or in a hiding place.

I'm a new subscriber, and I really enjoy your videos. I do have a question, though. If you consider her to be semi- terrestrial, why did you build two land masses instead of one?
@WonderfulWorldReptiles
@WonderfulWorldReptiles 6 ай бұрын
No reason really, maybe for how it looks. He uses every bit of it though. If I could afford it I wish I could put him in something bigger.

Hello. How are you doing What is the log or platform that you use for the Land Area for your American Bull Frog? What do you use to change the water out with for Your American Bullfrog's Tank?
@WonderfulWorldReptiles
@WonderfulWorldReptiles 2 ай бұрын
I wish I recorded building this paludarium but I didn’t. Basically to build up the area where the land is is I put about 6 inches of aquarium filter foam and cut it to the shape I wanted. Then I put a mesh barrier over that and put down the substrate. For changing the water, it’s pretty clumsy but I just scoop it out with a cup and put it in a bucket. I replace about half the water every month or two.

I just rescued an adult bullfrog from a wetmarket as well. I put some worms in his or her tank but hasnt eat yet. Its been two days. I assume she is adapting. Also i've noticed she changed her colour from dark green to sometimes near black. I have no idea why she changes her colour. She is in a room with normal temperature.

It could be the stress of being in a new home. But it sounds like it had a rough life before you came in. It might take a lot to acclimate him but I'm glad you rescued him. 😀

@WonderfulWorldReptiles

@@redneckfarmingcorporation4116 Well, sometimes they will refuse food while they are acclimating to a new enclosure. Most likely he'll eat once he starts feeling more at home. I wish you luck

I have a question my bullfrog never comes out in the daytime is that normal or am I doing something wrong? I also wanted to know if I need some kind of heater for mine because I put him in the attic during the summer but in winter it's as cold as it gets outside and it snows should I get a heater for the winter? And how many crickets should I feed a two year old bullfrog?
@WonderfulWorldReptiles
@WonderfulWorldReptiles 3 ай бұрын
If it gets that cold you should use a heater. I feed mine a handful of crickets about twice a week.

@@WonderfulWorldReptiles I have an in-ground pool and in the early to mid spring it still has a tarp over it so rain water builds up along with various plant matter and Tree frogs (I live in Maryland) lay eggs so once we're about to open our pool I drain the water with a screen over the pump until it's a small puddle and scoop the tadpoles out and put them in a kid pool and feed them boiled romaine lettuce until they are able to crawl out of the pool on their own. Needless to say we have a crazy treefrog population lol. We also get a lot of bullfrogs and leopard frogs. I put these floats that are made to help critters be able to climb out of the pool all around so it greatly lessons drowning of frogs etc. We now also have a fairly healthy population of blue-tailed skinks that are native to Maryland but didn't exist in my area. I'm pretty sure they came in on these giant truckloads of mulch that the county brought in to build a temporary road to do some work nearby. I love seeing them come back more and more each year as I'm sure at some point in recent history they lived in this area but because my location is fairly close to the city (just outside of Baltimore) they've probably been pushed out over the years.
