Complete bathroom shower install time lapse start to finish. Including pre slope, vinyl shower liner, cement board, recesses niche, waterproofing, wood look plank porcelain tile, and grouting.
A pre pitch or pre slope • How to install a showe... under a shower pan liner is an essential part of a successful tile shower installation. A pre slope is the base under the shower pan liner which is pitched so that the any water that manages to get into the shower base can be directed to the weep holes in the three piece drain and out of the liner. If a pre slope is not installed under the liner then any water that filters into the base of the shower will remain there. To install a pre slope on a concrete base first spread a thin layer of thinset with a notched trowel, while it is still fresh, the deck mud is then shaped on top of the thinset so that there is a slope of ¼" per foot sloping towards the drain. The part of the base furthest away from the drain will be higher than the drain, so as to create a positive pitch towards the drain. How to install a vinyl shower liner. When installing a vinyl liner for the pan of a shower floor, • How to install a vinyl... it is imperative that any penetrations to secure the liner be above the level of the shower curb. Also the folds at the corners of the shower should always be done without cutting the liner lower than the shower curb. I do not install dam corners on the curb, because I apply a liquid waterproofing membrane on the surface of the entire shower stall, or at the very least the curb will be thoroughly waterproofed to avoid leeks in this critical area if this step is to be omitted, the dam corners should be used. The silicone bead at the drain where the liner is clamped to the 3 piece drain should always be applied, do not skip this step. How to install mud in a shower pan for a tile shower stall. • How to install Mud i... When installing a tile shower, whether it be ceramic, marble travertine or any other tile product, a mud base will be required. Mud also known as deck mud, is a mixture of sand and Portland cement mixed to a ratio that will create a solid foundation for the tile which will be installed on it. The deck mud is mixed with water to a dump consistence which will allow the deck mud to hold its shape when pressed into a ball. The mud must be pitcher towards the drain so that a slope of at least ¼" per foot is achieved. The ratio of sand and Portland cement is usually 4:1 or 5:1. I usually use "Quikrete" sand topping mix, which as far as I know, has a ratio which is a little richer than needed, but is suitable for a shower pan. The method I employ to install my mud in shower pan, is to create a level and flat perimeter around the base of the shower walls which is at the correct height in relation to the drain, and then fill the middle part of the shower pan screeding down to the drain with the proper pitch. The mud is shaped with a wooden trowel, steel trowel, level and other pieces of straight wood lengths cut to the required lengths. In this video I demonstrate the technique I use to install a shower mud pan base. There are other methods that can be used, but this is the way I have installed hundreds of shower bases.
I hope anyone that watches this finds it helpful.

From one pro to another. This video is a great overview of a proper shower installation. We use a redundant level of waterproofing as well. The customer is spending a lot of money for these showers and deserves a leak free installation. The description is top notch as well. Great job.

If the screws are above the curb ...??? And what's the preference on it then as far as fasteners? It's how we always did it .. a nail ? It has to be fastened to the stud in some manner and then the durock is what screwed to the studs no ? Just not below the top of the curb we had to test our pans and put water in them on 2nd rough in it was full to the top of the curb for at least 24 hours for inspection.. so we couldn't skip the corners as he said or the silicone under on the 3 piece drain it would leak .. not could would and many 10 15 20 story buildings on the beach in ft lauderdale have walk in showers w pans just like that consider how much damage could occur when a pan leaks to the apartment below we have to take pride in our work or don't do it at all !!!

When ever i can i like to have the wall tile on top of the floor tile, but in reality it can be either as long as you caulk the change of plain. Sometimes it is impractical to tile the floor first, so you can leave out the bottom row of wall tile and then install the floor and cut that last row of wall tile in as you install the floor.Sometimes you have to finish the wall completely, so you leave a soft joint where floor and walls meet.

I agree with most everything you do here except the wood in the curb, I have always made mine with solid mud with the pan inside and a piece of wire lath bonding the inside and outside together. As you know a few drops of water leaking onto that wood will blow it apart in no time. Plus you can level it and pitch the inside a bit toward the drain. I also set my shower floors in fresh mud, I can get them flatter when the mud is still plastic. It takes a little practice but that shower floor lays down a little better....looks good. 44 years and still working.....

RGSPride TILE When i install a traditional shower, when i can i waterproof everything, including the mud shower floor, in effect bringing the the waterproofing directly under the tile like the Kerdi system. I still put in the preslope, vinyl pan liner etc, but i want to minimize or even eliminate any water getting into the pan liner. The only week spot is at the drain because it is not designed to be watertight, but i figure any water that might get through the waterproofing at the drain will go directly down the drain and not permeate the mud bed.

Just one problem when you laid your floor tiles down you didn't slide them back and fourth perpendicular to the trowel lines so that the mortor has 100% coverage on bottom of tile, just laying them down only gets about 50% coverage which will lead to cracked tile eventually, large format tile requires atleast 80% coverage

***** I will do a small part of it. I will be gutting it out myself and installing the cabinet and the sink and paint. But the tiling of the floor and the shower and everything else shower-related, I will not touch. You don't have to give me a figure. But apart from material and labor cost, what does a contractor charge for? Because when I included all the costs of the labor and the materials I came up with something like 4000 and I was being very liberal with my estimates. But then the contractor gave me a figure double that amount.

Get a couple of estimates, if you are not sure of the contractor, get referrals, people ask me for referals and I give them the names of peploe I have recently done work for. If they are all in the same ball park you have your answer. Cost of a job will be greatly affdcted by the cost of materials used, type of tile etc.

I just watched your How to Install Mud In A Shower Floor Method 2. That's what applies to my scenario where I've got a concrete subfloor. I'm trying to remedy a terrible tile job on the floor of a shower so I just dug out the tile floor and now I'm working with an already installed shower pan. But I still need to create the right pitch. Do you suggest using a self-forming compound or using the Quikrete and sand like you showed in the video to form the right slope?
@emutiny
@emutiny 10 жыл бұрын
Heres my advice. Take it or leave it but you can just level a line around your walls higher than the drain and just work it by eye. A quarter or 3/8 per foot. You can slope it any way you like. If you think your mix is too dry, add some water. My advice, just go at it man. Take your time, spend a day on it, and try your best not to get frustrated. Plenty of showers have been built by people who think they don't know what they are doing. Don't doubt yourself, there is no magic involved. All you need is a trowel.

PS. Ive been doing tile professionally for almost 6 years. So I know for a fact that if you hire a "pro" it could be a guy just like me or you behind a salesman and actually its his first pan. Just don't get discouraged, building a shower takes time.
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 10 жыл бұрын
emutiny He is correct, level your mud around the perimeter of the shower so that it is at least a 1/4" higher than the drain for every foot at the furthest point. When you then fill the middle part of the pan screeding to the drain you will automatically create the proper pitch. If you think the mix is dryer than you would like add some water to the top by squeezing water out of a saturated sponge over the top of the mud without actually touching the mud, and then just flat trowel a little to smooth if needed.

😊👍Excellent, I am just now learning to work on projects around the house...new home owner, been in my new home for 5 years but things are starting to need maintenance. There is 2 choices, pay someone big bucks or learn to do it, i've chosen to try to learn, so far i've been good so far but it will be years till I can say i'm competent as learning off of KZfaq isn't exactly ideal because of all the "little details" and tricks that can only be learned by working with people who know the trade including where to get the best prices and what to avoid.

Sal, I have done a few tile jobs (for myself, not commercially). In preparation of a bedroom / master bath remodel, I took to youtube to learn any techniques to add to my limited experience. I want to personally thank you for all of the time you have invested in helping regular folks do a better job (hopefully safer) repairing and improving their homes. If there is a way to repay you for your insight, I would like to know. I have a couple of questions regarding a walk in shower on concrete. 1. are there any cleaning steps to take before spreading the thin-set on the concrete? 2. should any special steps be taken to prevent the thin-set from being mixed into the sand mix? As far as waterproofing is concerned; 1. I have seen videos of you using schluter kerdi as well as liquid membrane on the walls etc. Is there a clear advantage to one vs. the other? 2. can the schluter be applied to the pre-slope? 3. some of the schluter videos show them installing over a sheetrock substrate for a wet-room stand up shower. Do you recommend this? have you done this? Thank you for your time!
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 7 жыл бұрын
1. sweep and clean any dust or bond inhibitors. 2. Mud bed will bond to thinset on concrete. Schluter is much better. Schluter is a membrane that must be used in conjunction with a the schluter bonding flange which is part of the drain assembly, I have videos that specifically address this. I usually use Kerdi-Board, but the membrane can go over sheet rock, however if it makes you feel better use a cement backer board.

This looks really nice. It is good work. Is it a whole bathroom or just the shower and floor? I had contractor do bathroom. Tiling was perfect, but GC did the rest and I did not realize until it was too late that he did not insulate an exterior wall well enough. So, too cold in winter and too hot in summer. Only way to fix is to cut into tile and inject foam. Bummer!

I see this master tiler guy "TileMasterGa" on youtube who does not seal all of the backer board and only applies thin set on the tile, not the wall. Where do these guys get off calling themselves Master Tile Setters"? They can't even follow simple directions or use industry standards. Love you videos. Nice to see things done right..
@SalDiBlasi

I actually know Michael and he is a good guy, he uses a lot of Denshield which has a waterproof membrane on the surface already and only needs to have the corners and seams treated, so nothing wrong there, and there is nothing wrong with applying the thinset to the tile, as long as you get good adhesion to the walls, i do it often times myself. I try to go by the book a bit more than he does, i don't agree with everything he does, but I am not going to bad mouth him either.
