This is an edited version of an Etsy SEO webinar that I did for my public Facebook group. It's important to go through the whole thing in order and not skip around, because it's presented in an ordered way. Even if you think you know something already, don't skip ahead because you'll miss something!
This goes over what long tail keywords are, how the SEO research tools work, how to use them the right way, and how to choose keywords for Etsy. I use Marmalead in this video and I recommend it because in my experience it's the most accurate of the tools I've tried. I'm not a Marmalead affiliate and I don't get anything for recommending it, I just like it and I do think it's the most accurate based on their data set and how their results correspond to my own shop stats.
To get to Marmalead, go to marmalead.com/
00:00 Intro
02:10 what is a long tail keyword?
09:18 Why long tails are searched more and rated that way in search tools
15:05 Do long tail keywords contain other keywords?
16:00 Computers don't think, and why word order match isn't everything
18:20 In Marmalead and looking at what it's actually telling you, plus initial short tail selection
25:40 Finding long tail keywords that apply
31:45 Comparing keywords for the best order
36:30 How Etsy handles long tail keywords for matching
42:50 How Etsy ranks listings

Best video ever, however now have a headache. And serious question, after watching so many of your videos and so many of Marmalead's videos, why oh why did I not know the the Marmalead "competition" wasnt for the word order match and was for every listing with those words in the title and tage? I have been trying to avoid anything with 50.000+ competition as felt like I didnt have a chance for ranking for them and now I feel like I am looking out on views just because I didnt realise one very important part of the stats. Anyway fantastic vidwo, just a shame I didnt see it years ago when I first started. Anyway now to go and work on my keywords (again).

@@KaraBuntin The first time I subscribed to Marmalead about 3 or 4 years ago, I was so confused with the somewhat "blank" looking screen, that I had no idea what to do with it. I later used the "grades" feature, but didn't find that very helpful. It wasn't until I found a few of you who did KZfaq videos hat I had any clue. While Marmalead has offered more information about how to use the tool, I think they could have instructions or a link to a KZfaq video with suggestions on how to best start using the tool, suggested work flow, using cloud, creating keyword lists, etc. I stopped my subscription a while back, but maybe it is time to start it again.

I think what was a revelation for me was understanding the probability of any one combination of long-tail keywords showing up. It's more like winning the lottery. It's great if your exact keyword combination comes up because you will be an exact match for the exact phrase someone put into the search engine. However the probability of that event happening is low. And If it's not low probability, that means it's not long-tail.

As I see from your search results, the 1st priority is given to the advertised listings with good keywords match (logically, cos Etsy earn money from just clicking on this listings); the 2nd priority is given to the high rate sellers with average keywords match - even listings without "breeze" are presented (cos Etsy earn money from sales); 3rd priority is given to some new listings (fresh sellers) to check how much buyers could be interested in it; and only after that Etsy shows results that match the best with the search phrase. So yeah, it's another proof of fidelity of the statement "the more sales the higher your search rank". All other things are just supporters but yet important of course.

Ads are always at the top but they don’t always have exact word order match! A lot of the time it shows stuff that’s irrelevant, or at least they do in my categories.

Thank you for making this video, as I recognized that the question was from me in your E-Shop Facebook group. It definitely explained a lot, especially since you have mentioned that you look for low competition for long tail keywords searches and are not concerned that the search volume is low. Also love seeing examples of your thought process with analyzing the data from Marmalead, since sometimes it is hard to decipher. Hope you will do more videos like this one!

I thought I had finally titled, described, and tagged a listing for knit/crochet supply as best as anyone could. Price was good, even free shipping. Reviews were always 5star. Had up to six sales a week, even before the plague...yet no sales for them in months. Thinking I had a great stay at home craft supply now unneeded because folks are doing other things, I'm wondering what, if anything, I should change about the listing/s (I even have some seasonal & bulk groupings) to get sales again. Likely to just leave them alone, but if no sales, the ranking sinks and suffers.

I don’t know how I missed this video of yours but I’m glad you recommended it. It’s the best SEO video for Etsy I’ve ever seen and so helpful. One question I have is, would it be a good idea to put a bunch of the long tail phrases in exact match order in your title since Etsy give you room for that and if it apples to what you are selling. Or should you just put one long tail phrase in the title and the rest in your tags? Sorry if this is a stupid question 😳

You can put as many in the title as you want to, Etsy doesn't only find your listings for one thing. Just make sure that they're accurate.

Hi, love your videos! I have a question. I saw another KZfaqr write a video on SEO and she said that you should write your titles without any commas or separators. She said that by eliminating commas, any words that are together can be found as an exact match and if you put commas it limits your exact word match to the phrases separated by a comma. Example ..... Easter baby romper, baby girl bunny outfit, newborn custom gift set, personalized wooden rattle, infant knit overalls, spring photo shoot, etc can all be found for exact matches for the word phrases that would have the commas as well as any combination of words that are together without the commas. So if that title didn't have commas you can get an exact match for romper baby girl, bunny outfit newborn, Easter baby romper baby girl, wooden rattle infant, custom gift set personalized, infant knit overalls spring, as well as Easter baby romper, baby girl bunny outfit, newborn custom gift set, personalized wooden rattle, infant overalls, spring photo shoot. Thoughts??
@KaraBuntin

That’s a load of crap and shows a fundamental lack of understanding about how Etsy find words. Etsy will hop around inside of your titles and tags to pick up words, they don’t have to be together. Also, commas are ignored so if the words are in that order and you have punctuation in there it’s still considered an exact word order match.

Another question : Why is it not necessary to repeat same words in tags & titles. As I heard in your tutorials that since shortly Etsy also wants the title key words in the description. Do the long tale key words have to stay together even in a different word order or can I split a long tale keyword of 4 words for example and distribute the single word in the text? And one more: Do I have to repeat the tags in the description??
@SuperJesek
@SuperJesek 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kara, I have my first question. You said that the matching of titles & tags has become not so important anymore and that tags sometimes are not even necessary anymore to fill in. So would you say that the tags are just added keywords and Etsy just picks them out, if they can complete a search, using your example: I have "lavanda handmade soap" in my title as a long tale and in the tags I have for instance : "rose" , "flower" "organic" , "cubic", "natural",.. Etc. Etc My question is that if someone is looking for "lavanda rose handmade soap" , does Etsy include automatically my tag "rose", into the longtale keyword in the title?

What do you think about digital products, is there still a room for these types of products even with longtail keywords?
@KaraBuntin

Of course there’s room, but with the influx of passive income sellers who are flooding the market with printables lately it’s definitely not easy.
@fox__fox

What I'm really wondering about is how Etsy combines different tags, if it does. For example, I have two tags "handmade soap" and "lavender orange lemon". Does Etsy automatically combine it as keyword phrases like "lavender handmade soap", "orange handmade soap", "lemon orange soap", etc.? If I have 10 various flavours in one listing, I can't describe all of them in the tags as "lavender handmade soap", "orange handmade soap" and so on. It's kinda meaningless. But I'm not sure how Etsy combines tags like "handmade soap" and "lavender orange lemon"...

If it's a shirt and there are a lot of Halloween items, I would title it as specifically as you can then send your own traffic to it. There's no magic title that will work better than others, but if you start getting traffic and sales Etsy will show it more.

@@KaraBuntin I have been following you for a week or so, but I believe you do not support POD or am I mistaken? Looks like you have shops which you are selling your own products correct? As far as SEO goes, there are some Teachers on Etsy who claim that SEO doesn’t matter! There is a Person on You Tube “Etsy consultant “ who teaches that theory and it confuses me very much. If SEO wouldn’t matter how would buyers find our products? Correct? As of now I am just promoting my POD shirts , sweatshirts myself which are traffic and sales by friends and family, 6 sales and 3 reviews. Very new ! I hope you will reply!❤ and thank you!
