If you followed my channel for any length of time you've seen that I've broken several blades over the past few months. The blades are ripper 37s they cut like laser beams but for some reason I am not having any longevity to these blades. Sometimes they break when they're not even in the cut. I suspect I'm putting too much tension on. Let me know what you think and the following video demonstrates my tensioning procedure. Thank you very much.

My suggestion would be to weld a nut on the end of your T handle and torque wrench in at 25lbs and call it a day.

I have an OS31. Im still on my first box of Norwoods. They've been sharpened twice now and haven't had one break yet. I tighten it all the way down until I bottom out and then back off 1 full turn

I never broke any of their blades either. I had many sharpenings on them. I am slowly learning these blades and hope I get it soon. Thanks for the comment

Really sorry to hear about all the blades breaking. I've never used that brand. I always tension just so the washer is just about flush with the housing. Don't count turns at all. I have broken blades but they had been sharpened a number of times and didn't owe me anything. They were simply worn out. Only ever broke one blade that only had a couple logs on it and it broke at the weld. I wrote it off a not having been annealed properly. we have the same mill. Going back to the comments about shock and vibration, try removing the tensioning unit and check it out. Maybe something is broken or a weld in cracked. I did have the T handle weld break on me and Frontier sent me a complete new unit with reinforced welds. The T handle was shaking around like crazy just before it gave out. Just a thought.

My handle does vibrate like crazy. It doesn't show up in the videos. The speed must closely match the camera frames per second. My washer isn't even close any more I've backed off so much. I might just take all that out like you suggest. Thank you.

I finally invested in a starrett blade tension gauge. I have a Cooks type spring that maintains tension. So, after setting the tension , I selected a drill bit that fit in the gap between the coils on the spring. So, basically made a gauge with three settings with various drill bit sizes…this way I can set it perfect every time. Each blade can be a bit different because when they are welded, a few thousands of an inch difference will create huge tension discrepancies. I do not know if yours has a spring, tensioner or not
@BigelowWoodcraft
@BigelowWoodcraft 24 күн бұрын
We do have a spring tensioner much like a valve spring. That spring tension gauge by Starrett is what I was talking about getting. What tension are you bringing your blades too 15k? I'd love to try one. Find my torque and then use a torque wrench. I notice the difference when I sharpen the blades the length discrepancy. Great comment. Thank you.

Sorry to hear that you are having trouble , the girls at lumber capital log yard are having issues with bands breaking after leaving their cut , I suspect it is a weakness in the blade not being able to transition from work tension to freewheel mode , Hope you find some good blades

I do not have answers for you, but i feel the frustration. I came out to my shop and had 3 carbides broke on my planer. Had not even started anything yet. The random failures are the most frustrating.

Back off 1/4 turn try it next blade 1/2 etc till the blade doesn’t track or slips on the wheels. See what you get. When I start breaking to early I back off a little.

I’m still using the blade when I bought my mill. I got 3 boxes and the only one I have broke was my fault. The log rolled on me both times. I turn mine about a half turn more than what u do. My washer is only about 1/4 “ from flush. Sounds like the blades to me are they thicker than the other blades that may make them more brittle.

Mark they measure correctly .042" I think I only broke 1 sabertooth every. I had 11 of them when I first got the mill. I actually still have one for old time sake lol. I'm glad to hear Many have said they do it just like me. So it's maybe not me

That's true. I'm wondering if they have "heard". I'm not a big channel but so I'm not sure if they would be worried. I really don't want them to have any problems either. They have been a great company to get my blades from. Hopefully we can get this worked out. Have a great weekend Del.

I would give them a call and at least ask if anyone else has had a problem . I wouldn’t want to hurt them either but it hurts every time one breaks and your channel is big enough to count . 👍🏻🇺🇸

It seems strange to see a blade break while you weren't even cutting!!! You don't seem to be turning the tensioner with an excessive amount of torque, but we won't be able to know until we use a torque wrench. The one think that I just thought of is the tension spring?? Is it possible that it binds or collapses, not allowing any give in the system, so that the blade bounces and then snaps?? Someone with a valve spring checker might show some very interesting results, or might rule out that it's the spring?
@BigelowWoodcraft
@BigelowWoodcraft 24 күн бұрын
That's an interesting take. I never thought about that. I'm thinking of it like recoil. Maybe it's vibrating across the span of both wheels at the top and the spring isn't absorbing the recoil. My spring is nowhere near compressed but is something binding. I'll look at that. Another thing some mills have is a block of wood or some other composite that is attached to the top of the cabinet just above the blade. Basically like a filler to take up the space that the blade could start vibrating or oscillating. Kind of like a blade guide but on top. I like this concept. Thanks for the suggestion. I broke another one just the other day. I did change the idle belt because it had a knick in it so I was thinking maybe that was causing the blade to do something funny. We will get it.

Jerry. Could the drive wheels be running skew due to worn bearings or deformed metal bracing? Are they still perfectly round?
@BigelowWoodcraft
@BigelowWoodcraft 24 күн бұрын
That's a good point. I'll look into that. They look great when I spin by hand. No no slop. I did change the idle belt and hopefully that will help because I had a big knick in it. I just am not sure.

Too much tension, I think, regardless of what the book says. Since I backed off half a turn from the Woodland Mills setting of three turns, no broken blades and the cut is still true. If Norwood says five turns, try four or four and a quarter. If the cut is straight, good. If not, add a little more tension and, when the cut is true, that's your new tension setting.
@BigelowWoodcraft

Man, that's not good. Do you get your blades from jerrys resharp? I reached out to them to see what blades for my saw would cost. The blades were the same price as the custom length Lenox blades I've always used, but shipping was about a tenth of what I have been paying. I usually get 6 or 7 sharpening's out of each one before I see stress cracks. I have broken a few few but never in the weld. I'm running 1.25 x .042 x 162, 7/8 tooth spacing. I was seriously considering changing, but I'm going to hold off for a bit. I can't imagine you are over tensioning if you are following manufacturing recommendations. I hope you get this figured out as I know it has to be frustrating. Ed

Yes Ed, I get them from Jerry's Resharp. That's what I originally felt but I'm leaning towards me over tightening. I've backed down to 4.5 turns. I did break another one this week though....ugh

Really appreciate the content!Finally got my OS27 set up but I have a question for you if you don’t mind? The V belt on my idle wheel is pretty loose, I’ve noticed on some of your other videos that your belt appears loose too. Has this ever been an issue for you? Also my bandwheels measure 18” in dia. Even though Frontier advertises 19” on the OS27
@BigelowWoodcraft
@BigelowWoodcraft 21 күн бұрын
It has to be loose otherwise it won't go on. Once the belt is blade is tight the v belt is locked in. The 3 o'clock side will still be loose. I've never measured my wheel. I'm not sure what size they are. You will love the mill. Keep me informed.
