After 42 years of operating.. 3 months lease payments,insurance, and personal commitments plus 15k in the bank before you buy the truck.. I know it’s a lot of money and doesn’t seem possible but that way you can concentrate on learning to be a Professional operator. Also you won’t be a desperate owner that has no choice but to run cheap..

Thank you for this guide! After 15 years at an office job, I'm in CDL school now to become a trucker like my father and grandfather were. They owned their own company in the '80s. Dude, the DPF issue is precisely why I’ve hung onto my 2005 Volvo 780 since I bought it new in 2004. No DEF, it has a 565 Horse Cummins ISX, 13 speed tranny, and I also run synthetic (AMSOIL) in it. I’ve used Rotella Synthetic as well, no complaints. If you really want to save even more money on PM’s, get an OPS-1 bypass filter. That way, I change my oil at 50k, while changing the bypass filter at every 25k. You’ll save money on PM’s, fuel (yes fuel!), and you will be running CLEANER OIL in your engine all the time, not just when it’s first changed and becomes progressively dirtier. I’ve been doing this for over 6 years now and I swear by it.
@chasethornton5986
@chasethornton5986 3 жыл бұрын
You do an oil change at 50k?!
@SoCal780
@SoCal780 3 жыл бұрын
@@chasethornton5986 yes I do because with a bypass oil filter, it filters the oil down to 1 micron after the oil goes through AMSOIL’s extended life oil filter, which is good for the full 50k miles. I occasionally send in oil samples to a lab for analysis and they will tell me that it’s still good but AMSOIL recommends to change it at 50k. With conventional oil and no bypass filter, I would’ve had 3 PM’s done in that amount of time. Plus, you start out with clean oil and it gets progressively dirtier as you reach the 15-20k miles towards your next PM. With a bypass oil filter keeping the oil cleaner ALL the time, you can use it for a much longer period of time.

I love how you present the information on the intricacies of owner operator ... now my question is can I without prior working for a company become an owner operator and learn as I go?? keeping in mind the advice that you gave regarding the finances and records keeping. By the way the video on the transmission wheelbase and gear ratios was spot on because I could hardly get any information on the web about those topics. Great video with lots of great info for up and coming owner ops. I’m currently looking to trade my truck in, which is my first actual financed truck, bought it with 450k miles, now it has 834. But I’m putting back 1 grand every week for maintenance alone. I’ll continue to do that even when I get my next truck. Even though my next one will be used but new enough to have a good amount of factory warranty left, my maintenance account will turn into a simple extra safety net should my truck be down a month for warranty work.

I'm sorry to prove you wrong on that it's better if you change your oil every 12000 to 15000 miles because everything depends on the miles that you have in your truck if your truck has 200 something thousand miles it's okay for you to change it every 30,000 miles but if your truck you get a used and you already put over a million miles it's better to have the cleanest oil or do a oil change every 12 to 15,000 miles because one thing the oils comes with a lubrication that gets worn out by the time of used in Auto so contains detergents to clean out the carbon monoxide and keep your engine clean through the inside of the engine compartment that's why most mechanics recommends you to change it every 12 to 15,000 miles it all depends how you run your books and your finances

If I’m starting out with a CDL A in hand (Got my very expensive CDL from a trucking school in Brooklyn). Could you recommend a good trucking company to start with? I’ve been asking here but no one minus one mentioned Melton Truck Lines. Now, I don’t have a criminal record, I don’t and never do drugs, smoke weed, or otherwise. My driving record is excellent, no accidents, or tickets. I’ve also had my CDL since early 2019. I didn’t drive because I took a teaching position in a Catholic school. The school is now permanently closed and knowing how crazy the NYC Department of Education is, I’d like to follow my dreams of pursuing a trucking job. In addition, I’m not thinking of becoming an O/O until I have at least two to three years of experience first. If I do buy a truck, a friend of mine suggested buying a used truck. He actually bought a 2006 Volvo tractor (manual) and he paid $15,000. His costs were less than paying too much. Lastly, he drives dry goods and he drives as an O/O for Brite Logistics. As for me, I like flatbed because you’re keeping yourself active as opposed to sitting in a truck, but I’m sure you can take a walk and keep yourself fit, eating properly, etc., and I’m also assuming driving van would be better than starting flatbed and worry about your tarps flying off if you make a mistake. So having said that, if in fact I do go flatbed can you recommend a good starter company? If not, can you recommend another company that you think would be a good start. Keeping in mind that I need a refresher course. I don’t mind working hard but I need more training that will prepare me for the road? I was looking at Melton, Maverick, Prime, Schneider (they’re offering Tanker), and like you I like my sleep. I looked at Variant, TMC, and Gypsum. I also, live closer to New Jersey. Gypsum is in Northern NY and that’s a five hour problem regarding getting home. What is your advice? Thank you and you’re an inspiration to me because you’re educated like myself and it demonstrates that many other white collar professionals are making the change towards the transportation industry. Thank you again and have a great week ahead!

Where most owner operators fail is that they take all if there profit out and spend it for personal purposes. You should take out just enough to cover your personal bills and a little extra for fun stuff. LEAVE THE REST IN YOUR COMPANY ACCOUNT. Then you should always have enough money to cover business expenses.

I have a bias to new trucks, I think they're better for the demands of today. But, and it's a big but most people fail, they don't go in properly prepared, or any amount of bad luck can shut you down. If you buy a 50,000 truck and fail, and sell it for 30,000 you as a trucker can likely afford to make payments on a 20,000 dollar note. But, if you fail in a 200,000 truck sell it for 70,000 not a chance in hell you'll be able to afford a 130,000 truck note working as a company driver.

How much of this info has changed? This latest round of crappy low paying spot freight is very concerning.

I thought about coming back to the states and coming out of retirement BUT! With this new tequila shot pervading society I think I'll wait a while. I'm an old guy who let my CDL go back in 2009, up to then I had over 2 million miles accident free. That said I would have to go to one of these Bravo Sierra driving schools then work for some fly by night big outfit, for probably three years If I do decide to go through this monkey dance I would hopefully find a good honest company to work for. I would save all my money for two to three years. During that time I would buy a 5,000 USD truck and rebuild it from front to back, then if the company I had chosen was honorable (that's a stretch). I would lease on with them and have an old but brand new condition truck. Provided I had the money in the bank to cover anything I had forgotten. But alas at my age I'm probably smarter to stay where I'm currently at. I did however enjoy your video.

Go haul cattle it will make you appreciate sleep 👍. If you do want a newer truck get at least a 2016 or newer the Def system is much better

@Cody Franklin Find someone local who will teach you how to drive and learn everything the truck then go take your test .The cattle industry is a rough life to live if I was you I would start out with something else to see if you don’t mind being away from home but if you know a cattle company that is local that has trucks you may be able to help out there and eventually start driving but it’s not for everyone it’s more of a way of life than a job I am a third generation truck driver it’s in my blood so to speak hope you get your license and find something to enjoy.I would stay away from the big companies also your just a heartbeat to them a smaller company will take care of you

Maybe I'm weird but I'd rather have a house and a simple used working truck than one pimped out super truck.

To be honest, and this may sound horrible to say but it's my truth... I just want to get away from people. I want to hit the open road to explore the country and make money doing it.

Are you able to lift weights and do cardio on the road? When you take your shirt off at the beach, are women able to imagine sexy time?

Yeah right I don’t think I can be a good smart ass. OPP think differently than companies drivers and they have no respect for others who are not owners. Maybe someone puts on their pants 👖 and shoes for them. Funny thing is my clothes Lol looks like theirs and I must say for some OP I look better. You know maintenance on hygiene which you must have done daily or at least every 8 days 😂😂😂😂

The truck driving industry is being ruined from the top. When drivers have to stop what they're doing with their family at the lake to come into town for a mandatory drug test on your only day off.....well that was enough for me and i found other employment.
