Arguably the worst place to find yourself is with someone on your back. Understanding the position and what options for escape exist is crucial. This video covers as many defenses and escapes from back control / back mount as can be packed into appx 20 minutes. Hope this helps!

One stripe purple belt, don't get to train as consistently as I would like, and I find myself blanking mid roll way too much. But the butterfly hook as you're getting out of back control from either side is what I keep forgetting, they keep long hooking me. Gonna have to drill that make sure it sticks. Thanks brother, you definitely deserve more subscribers than you have.

Just found this channel and I’m really glad I did! Very well explained and explained thoroughly in a way I’ll remember it. I know what I’m going to be drilling on Monday!

As a 4-stripe white belt, some of these details are so cool/useful and, things I haven't thought about before, which makes it all the more exciting for me. Excellent instruction style too, very succinct, but also giving the "why" part, which is extremely important in my experience. Thanks for this series, very helpful.

Fun detail to add at 16:40 -- if he decides to tough it out instead of yanking his arm back (or, if you can pinch his arm right enough that he can't), once you start to apply the wristlock, rotate his hand (still pressing on the back of his hand) so that his hand-forearm-bicep starts to make a Z (or S) shape instead of a U shape. The pain on the ulna side of his wrist will skyrocket, so practice this slowly on yourself or a buddy a few times before you try it in a live roll.

Great tutorial on back escapes. I'm really glad you made this as one of the main guys I train with takes my back and it's quite a struggle to be honest *no pun intended*. I usually hold up well with not getting choked, usually doing the techniques between the 5 -10min mark of the clip, mostly fighting the hands to try turn to the side and into him. But yeah his body triangle is quite frustrating to free myself from while he's on my back. I'm 5'10 and he's 6'5 in height so he's got those really long legs. Also he's got maybe 20kg over me and more experience so I do get slightly manhandled and he continuously switches his body triangle or turns it into I think is a twister or bow and arrow choke 🤔🤷‍♂️ But yeah this was good and I'll see how I go with him again later this week, since I know he'll get my back at some stage during our rounds haha.

I alway wondered during 6:39 if it would be possible to go for a figure 4 straight arm lock, either as your falling to the side or when your moving his top arm over to the opposite shoulder. Is it possible or is the angle just not right to go for it.

Hey Eli, what do you think of Priit Mikhelson's defensive bjj back defense techniques? He's like Danaher on mushrooms, I'm having mixed feelings about it. I can use it successfully in the gym, but it kinda fails me when we I roll competitive black belts, but the again, it's competitive black belts...

Yeah, it’s tough to judge the effectiveness of something based on how well it works on competitive black belts. They’re going to make a lot of stuff not work that should. Honestly, I haven’t watched much of anything from Priit Mikhelson, but I will check his stuff out.

I went to one of Priit's seminars about 6 years ago, it was interesting, but I don't think his system of jiu jitsu can be looked at in isolation. Jordan Teaches Jiu Jitsu had him on his channel recently and they had an hour discussion about defensive jiu jitsu as well as about 12 minute roll, you should check it out.

I've mostly used it with blue and purple and wrestlers. Pritts stuff is def worth adding to the basic ba k defense. I almost never get stuck with someone on my back now.

if you shrug your shoulders and look into the choking arm, it greatly kills and reduces the choke angle.
