One year ago, Home Assistant introduced Energy Monitoring, but today we look at ultimate power and energy monitoring HACS component. That will help you monitor individual devices without any additional hardware.

Cool vid! I am the developer of powercalc, you did a great job explaning. Nice to see how you and others are using and enjoying the software. Gives a lot of satisfaction for all the hard work I have put into it. Congratz with the 3 year and subbed ;-).

Thank you Bram and once again thanks for the great component. Also, just want to add that you're maintaining of it is superb. Just don't burn out as I see that you work a lot on it!!! OMG the last section is such a honey pot! I've been using Powercalc forever without using the UI. I can now understand how to group my 34 unique light sensors... so easy, great video!!

Great Vid!!! I've been using PowerCalc for a while, and absolutely love it. I'm still struggling with the more advanced features, but it has given new life to some smart plugs I have that do not have power metering built in.

Thank you Rian! I just added today few more sensors and need to take few measurements to add few more - for example - Roborock vacuum is now being tracked. It really is great piece of software, and should be somehow added to Home Assistant default integration list.

This is a really good idea, and a great implementation. I've been thinking of trying to make a wireless current clamp power meter that can be used per-circuit for things like water heaters, light circuits, per socket monitoring, etc. I know there are already things like the Homeenergy by Sense, but I believe it isn't great at detecting everything.

I use Shelly EM in fuse box to track overall power usage. But this one is really great to add for specific types of devices. Especially lights no matter if they are smart ones or just behind some smart switches. You can even add static loads for non-smart devices, but that's not that precise.

@@BeardedTinker Those Shelley devices are quite nice looking and not a bad price. I guess if you're already in your panel or plug socket you may as well do some wiring as well.

If I would need to grade devices - I would grade them by how long they work and don't need maintenance. I know that there are other options, but this one has been rock solid for 2+ years so far! And as you said, adding them when you are already in the box, is just really 1-2 minutes of work, overall. Plus as they are directly powered - no batteries to change there :D

Thank you very much Benn! Not sure, from my point of view, it could be lower - but it was without dishwasher and washing machine - they are huge power consumers - especially dishwasher. Usually it's around 11-13kWh per day during summer (without AC) and bit more in winter due to more lights being on.

I guess the sensors are really not overwhelming. If you had a dozen smart power monitoring switches you will usually get at least 4 entities per switch. Aeotec nanodimmer adds at least 6 sensors, as far as I can remember, per device. 20 dimmers, 20 x those 6 sensors........ 2 sensors per device really isn't that bad. Congratulations on the 3 years. It's been an amazing journey

Thank you Brendan!!! I talked with HA devs, and that's the issue they pointed out - that it can create (depending on number of devices you have) a lot of additional entities. They said they would rather have ability to manually control what gets created. But you have both - automatic and manual option of creating sensor. I don't have that problem :) The more devices, the better :) And THANK YOU - it's been wonderful journey!!!

You want to calculate usage of each device by using Shelly EM? You could in theory disconnect everything and than switch/on/off each of the devices to calculate usage of that device. But you also probably have some loads like fridge that turn on/off and cold mess your readings. But there is really no way to guess from overall load reading from Shelly what is creating it. THere are some other devices that can do it. If you know power consumption of a device, you can use Power Calc to set specific power usage for every device.

Great video and again something I directly tried out. Just one thing: I would have appreciated, if you would have continued just one step further, after creating the virtual entity. You close your sentence with something like 'and after everything is properly configured', but this is the part I need. ;-) If you have the time, could you please tell me, what the next step would be? I have the virtual entity and it looks good. Also the option to create an energy sensor is active, but no sensor shows up in the list of entities. Thanks a lot.

In the next step, you should either add just fixed power usage (number) or add also additional template values (as in example: playing: 5.5, standby: 2.5). And that should really just be it. I've created for test just one virtual sensor - for media player (Google Nest). Specified just standby power on first page and power on second. After I toggle it in Home Assistant, energy value updates.

@@BeardedTinker After switching from LUT to Linear, it kind of worked - at least an entity showed up, but a hint was displayed 'statistics_not_defined'. Then I decided to go the long way and now I would like to use the script to measure the exact consumption of my lights. But setting this up properly is again another story ;-)

Did you restart once again HA after adding powercalc: to your configuration.yaml file? If yes, try adding to logger part following: logger: default: warning logs: custom_components.powercalc: debug

Although an amazing project, most power consumption is not LED lights. Rather heating your home, the washing machine, your oven, the cooking stove, the freezer, the refrigerator, the air condition unit, and your computers, and similar odd things.

Yes, you are right - but for that we use power outlets with monitoring. By using both you can have full view of power consumption. Having only one (smart plugs) or the other (PowerCalc) gives you part of the picture.

DisLike bcs you not say to what device can be this used !. Only for a smart devices who can be controlled by HA, my not smart fan cannot be controlled here. I assume by title that you show some way with CT meter or Hall metter or others ways... not some calculation way - change a title or add a note in first few minutes of this video.

Ohh noooo - please don't dislike 😂😂😂😂 That's the thing with assumption - assume - ass u me... But if you would have bothered with RTFH for PowerCalc you would actually be surprised that it can roughly track even non smart devices. And also, there are TON of videos on net how you can rack non smart devices, I have few of them showing how to use for example Shelly Plug S for that....
