Cigars (like everything else) have diminishing returns once you break a certain price point ($11 ish). For example the difference between a $3 cigar and a $10 cigar is massive but the difference between a $10 cigar and a $40 cigar is borderline negligible.

About the inhaling portion I laughed so hard. I brought a friend to the cigar daily shop, he wouldn’t listen to me about not inhaling. He ended up vomiting outside on the side of your building and I had to ask Dustin for water to clean your building. 😂

No one ever told me about turning the uneven burning portion up. I just came to the conclusion on my own. It probably doesn’t matter but it makes me feel better

As for cutting a cigar anyway you want; don't punch a torpedo, just don't do it

When I was younger and originally switched from smoking cigarettes to cigars, I naturally was inhaling cigars as I smoked them and I never had a problem with inhaling them. I then quit smoking altogether and when I came back to smoking cigars, it was no longer natural to inhale them. I had heard that you weren't supposed to and the few times I accidentally inhaled a small amount (as I learned to retrohale), I quickly learned that I definitely did not want to inhale cigars.

Guy told me to lick the entire cigar before lighting. I think it was a form of old man hazing 😂

The re-lighting cracks me up. If i don't finish a cigar, I'll snip the charred part and store in my humidor. Recently, I did that and the second smoke from the re-light was more enjoyable than the first light 😂

When I started smoking cigars someone told me to rotate the cigar when I smoked it to stop it from canoeing. Now I only rotate it through habit. And yes, sometimes a stick canoes regardless lol.

I've been smoking cigars for over 15 years and I've always heard about the uneven burn. I never thought it did anything but I did always rotate it just in case and never thought to look into it further. I'll never do that again. Thanks for clearing it up!

Thanks for being honest on the whole plume vs mold thing. It's incredible that people still not only think plume is a thing, but think it's a *good* thing. It doesn't really even make sense. If you think about it, the most likely way to get oils to the surface would be to dramatically under humidify, so the cells of the leaf desiccate and shrink. Obviously, that is not a good idea.

Got into cigars about half a year ago and I'd definitely agree with what Tim says at 5:57. I live in Europe where I pay significantly more per stick than in the U.S. There's more variety in the U.S. and it's usually a LOT cheaper, sure you can't legitimately buy Cubans at home but there's so much more on the market than just Cubans, which are nice but definitely not the be all end all of cigars. Everyone is different. A cigar that I love, someone else may absolutely hate. And one they love I may not like. Smoke what you like.

The cigars I typically smoke are prone to getting runs to one side and I’ve found that rotating the cigar as I’m smoking it helps to prevent this and keeps it burning evenly.

I like a vertical V cut just because of the feel and the fact that I can get a good seal when I draw. I have to agree with Tim, love the colibri cutter

I agree that turning the long side up doesn't work to even the burn on a cigar. That idea, however, works well on a joint. I guess that is where the idea comes from

My wife likes to take a few draws on my cigar sometimes. It’s perfect because I get to spend time with her and don’t have to give up whole cigars. As far as cigars having to be expensive, my top 2 favorites are both under $10. I’ve found the same myth in the whiskey world.

When starting out, I accidentally inhaled a Perdomo Sungrown. Even as a cigarette smoker at the time, that inhale hurt so badly! Solid three minutes of recovery time.

From what I have learned about the various cuts and learned from my own experience, the cuts I use depend on shape and type of cigar. I use V-cut for belicoso or torpedoes to keep the integrity of the head shape. Straight cut and punch cuts depend on what I want in a draw and/or mouth feel. Most depend on preference, but with the V, I think shape is the main factor.

I didn’t know anyone who smoked cigars, I only know what you taught me. I do feel knowledgeable because of it .

You guys absolutely nailed! When I 1st started, I canooed and kept using dank old matches to start it back up. A month later, still using matches with an even burn. 20 years later, using a combination of matches and torches. It's kind of hard to do with matches here in the windy state of Maine.. Plus you are always in a hurry in the cold weather. I thrown on my snow suit and enjoy an icy cigar to the finish. Never listened to anyone's "tips".

ALOT of what I heard in the beginning was: cigars are a luxury item, only wealthy successful people can enjoy them, and any stick under $10 is trash. Well as a working class normie who enjoys $3 sticks, I say F*** ALL OF THAT.

Misinformation: flavored cigars are for newbies. I’m 61 & been smoking cigars since the late 1970’s. I never had a flavored cigar until about 15-20 years ago and tried an Acid Nasty. Now one of my humidors is for Acid only!

I'm a regular Ashton VSG smoker. But I also really like a Fuente Curly Head. Price doesn't matter if you like the smoke.

It's about consistency and refining your taste for what will bring you joy, not how much or how expensive your collection is. Least for those of us not ultra wealthy lol.

Love your show and the fact that you do a pretty good review on a lot of cigars. I just recently found you and am happy I did. Thanks for all the content. That being said I would like to correct one of your misconceptions. That would be your comments on Cuban cigars. I think we all get the fact that you have a cigar shop in the US and you make a good living from it. I certainly didn't expect you to come out and say yea Cubans are the best. LOL. I've been smoking cigars for 23 years. I started out on non cubans. Mostly Fuentes. Then someone gifted me a cuban and for the next 22 years that is all I smoked. Now with the prices going so high I am looking at non cubans once again. Anyway, a fair statement would have been that some people prefer Cubans over non Cubans. Comes down to personal preference. Look at the European and Asian markets. They are buying up Cubans faster than they can make them which is one reason why they have become scarce lately. Non Cubans do poorly in those markets except for a select few that are trying to gear their cigars towards a more cuban profile. So, my recent experience with non cubans is that they are getting better. Some manufacturers have tried really hard to make some high quality sticks. Tatuaje and Dunbarton are 2 of them off the top of my head. I would go as far as saying that i like thier cigars. Still not as good as Cubans but decent smokes. As for pricing, I will spend money on cigars. 925 in the last 2 weeks alone. All non Cubans. Sadly none with you. For some reason your not even close to being competitive but I did want to support you. i think your a good guy and enjoy your shows. So, as far as buying cigars goes, I can buy excellent custom rolled cubans for 250-350 a bundle. so when non Cubans get up to even close to that price, I prefer to buy Cubans. So what I am looking for is a good quality non Cuban cigar that is nowhere near that price point. Some Tatuaje and some Dunbarton fit the bill. Not all of them because they are getting up there in price. I have tried and am trying some of the higher end stuff but only on a one time deal just to see where they are at. In conclusion, non Cuban producers are geared toward the US market. 99.5% of US cigar smokers are probably smoking non Cubans. There is little chance that that will change anytime in the next 10-20 years. Even if the embargo is lifted, the prices are so high now that most couldn't afford them anyway. They are still the best cigars on the planet and will be for at least several more decades. Non Cubans have come a long way in 10 years but they still cant reproduce that Cuban salty twang. Thats whats really missing from the non Cubans. If they ever get that figured out they will be onto something and be able to compete with the Cubans.

My wife smokes cigars, like all day. She probably smokes 6-8 daily. Normally when she gets off of work we share cigars together while watching TV. It's awesome. But sometimes I have to ask her please save this one to smoke with me. Lol

One of my fav bits of cigar 'misinformation' that I've heard from time to time is that you shouldn't hold a cigar like a cigarette (between your fingers), you should only hold it between thumb and forefinger. I have no idea what this is supposed to accomplish - maybe it's supposed to be easier to handle?

The "canoeing" as you call it or uneven burn. Rotating the uneven burned part up has always worked for me, /shrug. I wouldnt really call it "misinformation", maybe somewhere along the lines of rumor. I generally rotate mine throughout the smoke which I think maintains an even burn. Personally I think the cut has a lot to do the overall draw and burn. An uneven cut may produce a more uneven burn.

Something that I never understand is when people say that there’s a “proper way to put out a cigar”… why does that matter? If I’m done with it, who cares how I put it out? It’s like saying there right and a wrong way to throw out a dirty napkin.

As far as a cigar having to be over $20, I was recommended a cigar called a Bolivar Confraida that was like 6$ and WOW what a great smoke

Another one I heard was that you had to remove the cellophane from the cigar before putting in your humidor. Total bunk. Cellophane prevents the cigar from losing subtle flavors over long periods of aging. That comes from the Sahakians who started testing the idea decades ago.

Turning a canoeing smoke to put the slower burning side up is just an idea that is reinvented by new smokers every day. It makes sense that it would help -- it just doesn't in practice.

I had bad canoeing issues with my cigars a few years back from many makers and sizes. Switched from 69% Boveda down to the 65% Boveda packs and completely solved all my burn issues. Probably year 4 or 5 now using the 65% and could not be happier. Took me years to figure out how to store my cigars properly at least for my climate i suppose.

When I first started I saw a bunch of things saying to start with Connecticut shade wrapper as it is a smoother and more mild cigar. I found that I dislike the flavor profile of the Connecticut for the most part, and it almost it almost drove me away from cigars altogether. I decided to try a Drew estates undercrown Maduro and found I really enjoyed that stick and continued with the hobby.

I Recently started smoking cigars on and off since the last year. Idk if it is MY tastebuds of just me burning bad but, I really don't feel or TASTE any difference between a LOT of the budget sticks. There's only about 4 cigs that I actively taste a difference. Macanudos Whites, flavored small tatianas, cuban rejects, a random romeo and juliet, and Backwoods honey berry. Out of those Im starting to not even try any other cigars. Factory smokes and Camachos are also good (Light/Connecticut's only for me too.)

I was always told to start with Connecticuts and lighter shades of cigars. Smoked like 5 of them and didn't like them at all, almost thought cigars weren't for me. Then I smoked a Tabernacle and realized that I just needed something with a stronger and heartier taste.

Considering uneven burns if you have a very thin pin and stick it in the side that's not burning so the air gets through that helps or let the cigar cool off and then touch it up on the unburned side only.

Price point is huge, Factory smokes are great and $2. My favorite cheapo is a Maduro Cuban Reject $3 at my local shop.

I’ve seen a lot of cigar makers inhale cigars. Saka, for example. Jones and Nodal. The myth I want busted is that you should freeze your cigars at home in your kitchen refrigerator. My thoughts are that a residential style freezer found in most homes will not get cold enough and that condensation or humidification can present a real problem.

When I was a college cigar noob I was exclusively recommended light, boring, flavorless cigars by tobacconists who assumed that would be the best beginner smoke. They also associated light/dark with light/strong.

I got one you can't enjoy a cigar in 30 degree or lower temp I basically smoke in cold Temps and still enjoy yes its better to smoke in the summer time but not everyone lives in enjoyable weather

Cigars and pipe tobacco are very similarly honest with prices. The prices are not because of what you will pay, they are because of the price of production. If you have a 5 dollar cigar then it was easily procured tobacco and an easy process.

Never heard the "turn the bad burn side up" myth, but... I have wondered about it when I've seen it.

The reason my wife glares at me when I’m outside smoking a cigar, is because she’s probably working and can’t join me. I’m lucky to have someone who encourages my hobbies.

I'm unsure if this is true, but someone told me the longer the ash hangs on without falling off, the better the cigar is.

As for the Cuban cigar “misinformation”, NC can be good, but the taste is quite different. Which is better, depends on the individual. However, until Cubans last year went nuts on price, NC sat on shelves while Cubans sold. Seen it for 25 years here in Japan, and it’s a fact all outside of the US.

Turning the cigar to stop one side from burning faster does work if it's windy. In a lounge it's not going to do anything though. I've saved myself from having to touch up cigars by doing this many times.

I agree with everything except lighting a cigar with a Bick. I have experimented with that only once and that’s because it significantly changes the flavor as in you can taste the gas. Same thing with a Zippo. Granted I use a Zippo but it has a butane insert.

At home, if no one sees it, I remove the banderole before I cut the cigar. I know there are people who would tar and feather me for it. But I just like holding a bare, original cigar between my fingers. Especially with Short Robustos, where the banderole is already reached after 2cm of embers. Of course, I know that something like this would never be possible in a public lounge...

I occasionally inhale a puff, generally on more mild cigars, former 2 pack a dayer who dabbled in jazz cabbage. Small puffs can be a nice little headrush

For me, it was that arturo fuente and padron were superior. That is major misinformation to me personally. 70%-70% where i live is way too high. Thick wrapper cigars won't burn at 70%-70%. 65% humidity is about right for me. Cubans are king. I've had good ones and bad ones. Boutique brands are inconsistent. Some are inconsistent, and some make the best cigars available.

I was told if you have a canoeing cigar you should put the slower burning in down when smoking because of the way oxygen is pulled into the cigar it helps the bottom heat up more and catch up. I have done it in the past and it worked but sometimes the canoeing is so bad nothing but a flame will fix it.

So go figure smh....so one day it was raining out and I wanted to light up a cohiba and she of course complained about it being smoked inside so I went out and across the way was a lady underneath an awning smoking a cigarette she invited me over to get under the awning and we talked and laughed about how her mom made her smoke outside and how my "soon to be ex" made me smoke outside well needless to say we started dating and have been best of friends to this day! The 70/70 rule comment in this video, reminded me that I had a nightmare recently. In my dream I had changed my Boveda to 65% packs, and when I went to grab a cigar they were all split in half from dryness.

True about the price. I visited a cigar shop near where I live and asked for some recommendations. The guy listed a couple around 10 bucks. I asked him if they had some of the cheaper ones I had a chance to smoke that I really liked. Dude said they are straight "hay" and I should not smoke those. I don't know if that was snobbism talking or he just wanted me to buy something more expensive. If someone new goes in and listens to those guys instead of trying all of those themselves there are gonna miss out on some great budget sticks.

I suggest Nica Rustica broadleaf and the Adobe line, along with the Herrera Esteli. All smokes around the 8-10 dollar range.

You need to get an expensive, “engineered” humidor because the cheaper ones don’t have a good seal, are mold traps, etc. Then you get hip to Tupperdors.

Not all the time but I do inhale some. Especially during the first half of the cigar before the strength increases. Smoked cigarettes for a time and it it increases the enjoyment

Here’s one I got from Tim the Swanson himself - rotate the cigar in your mouth while lighting it… it’s just silly. Instead, I just move the torch in circles 😂 much easier and intuitive.

I have to come to the table and say thay if you have an uneven burn having it up does work. I do it all the time. It definitely helps. Maybe the wind blows differently in the USA but all i can say is it does work in a pinch.

I don't know if anyone will see this, but I followed this "tip" for a short while and now I think it is bunk, the tip was: Never cut your cigar before you light it, if you cut it and then light it, the air flow will draw the heat from the flame into the cigar and will ruin the flavor profile.

My favorite "Plume" is the Monica Lewinsky "type" "Plume". Very nice.

The Obsidian White noise is a $4 stick and it's better than most $10 cigars I've had. It's one of my favorites right now, probably in my top 10.

Just here to say that the statement "storing wine upright will dry out corks" is a total myth.......and would belong in a "Wine Daily" video of similar subject:) Simple physics tells us that the humidity inside the bottle is 100%. Regardless if the liquid is touching the cork. The entire bottle of wine would need to evaporate before a cork could possibly dry out. On the other hand, wine cellar humidity does matter and an arid environment can dry out a cork.....but from the outside. Good video guys. I enjoyed it.

I also thought darker meant stronger, but learned that’s not true when I smoked a few that damn near black but were pretty mild.

With the wife hating cigars comment. I smoke ciggettes as well as cigars. I will not smoke inside my house. However the other night my wife actually asked me to smoke a cigar in the house. She said she loves the smell of cigars. That particular night, I was smoking a Rocky Patel 1992 vintage.

I inhaled for years even though I was told I didn't need to or wasn't supposed to. It was a habit from cigarettes. I no longer smoke cigarettes and I no longer inhale cigars.

When my cigar is burning uneven and I put the end that's not burning fast on the bottom it does even my cigars .... I always do that.... And it works for me.....
