Because it's not necessarily Skyrim itself, but the Enderal mod for it that I wish I could play again. The story in that mod is so good that I wish I could forget it and go back in. Enderal literally feels like a whole new game.

Skyrim was ground zero for great open world games. It was the start of an era. It’s not good now, because it’s been 10 years. But back when it was released, it was the pinnacle.

Re: Skyrim, I get that compared to the games today it's still one of the best (maybe not top 10 anymore, but still up there,) do yourself a favor and rewind 10 years and then tell me what it competes with (I get it, you were still in middle school.) By today's standards the combat sucks, the storyline is a bit bland etc, but that's because we have games with better combat, and we have games with better stories (it's only bland because I've been playing it for more than a decade.) But it ushered in a generation of games and it set standards that games released today still try to live up to.

ironically if i had to make a top 10 lists of my favorite games Fallout 4 would be #1 with Skyrim being a close second. now before i get murdered for saying that Fallout 4 is the best game ever made, and by extension some might think that means i also consider it to be the best game of the fallout series, i wouldn't really know, I've never played the others, but from what i can see through gameplay footage it does a lot of things better, but also cool features like being able to have a million different ways to finish a story, even going as far as being a pacifist, doesn't exist in fallout 4, lending it to feel somewhat watered down compared to the other entries in the series to veteran players . To me fallout 4 is the greatest game ever made for simply one reason, it takes place in the Boston area, i'm from the Boston area , and if there is one thing to know about the people of the Boston area, it's that the people of the Boston area, stay Loyal to the Boston area. as for what makes both fallout 4 and Skyrim so great outside of that, is purely on the creativity of the community, because of the extensive mods that the community have made, you can play these games a million times and never have the same experience twice. they allow you to make your character how you want to make them, and create your own story, and play it out how you envision your character to be, and the rest of the game, really is optional, and that's something that the previous entries in their respective saga's didn't lend themselves to at all. for example, my current fallout 4 playthrough isn't even going to beat the game, the entire goal is to rebuild Sanctuary as close as the player can to how it used to me, return to their life how it was before they entered the vault, let the world outside of them go on, but leave them out of it's affairs, sure in the end, home won't be as pretty and colorful as it once was, but it's still home. As for skyrim, i'm just a simple traveling merchant, i buy, trade, and sell things, i travel around the world, setting up shop in towns big and small, looking to earn coin.

I'm sorry man, Skyrim is definitely up there. It's fun, it's got a decent story, gameplay was good. Don't get me wrong, youre right it's a rather generic rpg, and even further than that is overall middle of the road, or just barely above average, but like new Vegas, that's just all it takes. They might not be the best games ever, but they definitely sit with the greats, mainly due to the amount of content.
