I just sat in on a discussion about this with James Witner here in HTX. Yes Nike is hurting. On running Hoka, new balance then birkenstock and Crocs. It’s about comfort over classic styles 🥇😎

the problem is that the hype kinda deflated which it’s good for me (40 y.o. collector) but it’s gonna spiral inevitably because am not their target buyer

That’s a bold face! 🛑 ✋ THE🧢🧢 Nike WAS NEVER on top since 1972! If you said Nike been on top since the mid 80s, 1985 to be exact, then I wouldn’t have to school u on this topic. Do better or just delete your comment.

Great episode, loved Matt talking about his heritage and then the general discussion towards the end. agreed that the mold may have been broken open to a certain degree, however you still walk into 90% or more of those resale shops, and the only 3 types of sneaker they have stocking the walls are retros, dunks and Yeezy restock product. maybe it will just continue to be a case where those 3 are found in those places, and the "other" brands (NB/Asics/Saucony/ON/Hoka) and silhouettes from Nike and Adidas (thinking Air Max, maybe Gazelle/Samba) continuing to be easily found or accessed at or near retail online. Feel there is a gap growing between those two situations and I hope it pushes things back more to making things accessible across the board.

Nike is selling a story that’s 40 years old. I love the story because I was brought up in it. For the newer generations, however, that doesn’t resonate with them. It’s crazy how in my area kids would rather wear Crocs or Hey Dudes because they’re simply more comfortable than a Jordan 4. It blows my mind but that’s just the modern generation.

Mark Parker was a business man but he was also a designer, whereas I get the feeling that Donahoe is just a numbers guy. Nike also seem to be less innovative or risking things like they used to - so much overkill as well, look at how many colours we are getting of every model, and consumers are taking a risk that they can pick them up in sales.

Into my late 30s I am finding myself wearing New Balance more and more they are so comfortable but I still Love my Jordans and Nikes I just think Nike is over flooding us with Jordans every week they are dropping multiple shoes it’s hard to keep up and to make it worse they are not giving us the OGs we want and when they do they make them reimagined or give them the ages look it was fine for a few shoes but now it’s too much and one last thing they need to start giving us at least some better insoles cause Jordans are too uncomfortable especially with those paper thin insoles

Nike isn’t falling off they just got too comfortable. With the amount of tier 1 athletes and celebrities on their team they should be focusing more on innovation and technology from the athletic performance aspect and overall new designs and silhouettes. If you have Drake on your team his shoes shouldn’t be “bricking”

With Jayz's relationship with the NFL... it will be interesting to see if Reebok turns this into anything with their new ownership. For Nike, to Brendan's point, its harder to grow dramaticly once you are at the level nike is at... but also, when you do slow down or fall off... its going to hit hard and fast in the same way. 1% shifts for small brands is ok but nike a 1 to 2 % dip could cause more layoffs and changes. Hey they mentioned Under Armour... Don't call it a comeback. The Internet keeps receipts and its going to show a lot of people sleeping.

I definitely agree that Nike is slowing down and feels threatened by other companies growth. Which is why they are releasing their best retros they are calling on their iconic silhouettes like the Jordan 3 black cements, military blues, linens, etc to make sure they assert their dominance. It's hard to resist Nike at times but man, other collaborators like JFG/Salehe with NB and Jae Tips with Saucony are too good to ignore.

I never buy Nikes and haven't since prolly 8th grade. Personally w/ my style I stay w/ Es, Emerica, Lakai, Vans (only half cabs) FP footwear and DC Shoes. Way better quality material, better soles, better comfort, and better price for quality. Nike is overpriced and the quality is not that great since it's mass mass produced so the quality falls off and yet you still pay so much $ for lack of quality because of mainstream IG, celeb, hypebeast culture. Always view all that as straight custie stuff.

2015 had Nike shook for sure. The Off-White and Travis Scott collabs between 2017 and 2019 are what rescued them in my opinion. However, you have to recognize that Nike these days is having to reckon with Asics and New Balance, who are very much cutting into their profits with runner chic and athleisure baddies online. The Nike V2K Run for example is a blatant Asics alternative that they’re offering at a competitive price point, faux metal mesh detailing and all. Nike is stuck between their bread and butter which is hyped retros and innovative tech that misses the mark for the most part.
