I really appreciate Plini and his songwriting ability in the instrumental prog scene. Not that it’s not great, but I tend to get tired of the shredding over the djenty rhythms. Plini writes interesting rhythms, riffs, licks with such great feeling.

Troy Wright is the drummer on this album, and does a fantastic job. I'd be interested to hear your take on his part. It follows the rhythm guitar to a T.. which in most cases wouldn't be too flashy, but Plini's rhythm parts are complex enough to allow for a lot of creativity on Troy's end. This album is one of my all time favorite drum compositions; Troy really locks in with the rest of the band , as you indicated. But he also lets loose and does everything with his own flourish. Great review!

You most definitely need to check out 'Selenium Forest' next, by far one of Plini's finest songs! Plini, Sithu Aye, Widek, & Gru are my top 4 Solo artists in the current wave of modern-day Prog music (although Gru hasn't released any new music outside of guest solos on all of Widek's albums in years). Chon are also amazing artists & it's been cool seeing their style evolve throughout the years. Looking forward to seeing what your thoughts are on them.

Plini is like more of a composer whereas Chon is just an amazingly chill math rock group. His more recent Sunhead EP is really great as well and has more jazz elements in it. The entire album is pretty short and worth a listen. Thanks for listening to all these great bands its really rare someone gives a cool and informed opinion about a lot of these bands. You NEED to check out Jakub Zyteki's most recent album tbh. It's incredible and so tasteful.

Hi Brian. Still hoping you can react to “Xanadu” by Rush, the live version off of “Exit... Stage Left”, performed in 1981. The studio version was recorded on their “A Farewell to Kings” album in 1977, but the live version is magnitudes better.

Omar Alvarado I think a classic prog week would be cool! For me, my fiancé introduced me to Pink Floyd and I REALLY started listening to them. Following them, the Beatles, Queen, rush, genesis, yes, then some more prog Metal- dream theater, symphony x, porcupine tree, opeth, riverside, and now some more modern people- has been really cool. It’s fun to hear influences all the way back and how people are using musical ideas from the 60-70’s up to today.

i’m about to binge watch this guy’s whole channel! i LOVE prog but don’t really understand a lot of theory or like, composition behind music. i don’t even know the proper terms i’m looking for haha. but i’m hoping to understand more about how people count time (like how tf do you figure out 13/8??) or know when a song is in drop e just by listening.
@zauls.
@zauls. 4 жыл бұрын
Make sure to have a solid grasp of the basics of theory before getting into more complex stuff like odd time signatures and the like. A good understanding of instrumentation and the role each instrument plays in a piece is also really useful when you really want to understand what is going on. Some songwriting knowledge would also go a long way. Good luck!

@@zauls. I appreciate the reply, thank you!! I used to have a stronger musical foundation, but kind of lost it over the years as I moved away from the arts and got more into science. Do you have any channel recommendations where I can learn the basics? Or websites, podcasts, anything?
@WinterhouseRecords
@WinterhouseRecords 4 жыл бұрын
Lizzie Turbett I don’t know if you’re still interested in this, and this may not be the answer you’re looking for but my advise would be to just find more artists that make you want to listen to their music, not just hear it. The band that did that for me was TesseracT, and since I discovered them several years ago my fundamental understanding of music has been broadened tremendously. I don’t know many channels that purely delve into theory that wouldn’t personally bore me to tears, but because I’ve listened to a broader range of music very intently I can usually figure out what any song is doing and why it works. Hope that helps? 😅

You should absolutely check out David Maxim Micic. I would imagine as a composer some of his stuff would really appeal to you - a lot of his music is very theatrical and grandiose, and his layering/subtleties have always been a personal favorite. It’s hard to pick only one song of his to recommend but I would say “Where Is Now?” encompasses what I just described best.
