Sleep token are always riding that line between haunting, hyper emotive pop vocals and aggressive release of anger. They are very good at the build and release method. I've always talked about this band as "too metal for pop fans but too pop for metal fans" but I love the mix they've got here. Their Sundowning record has not left my playlist since it came out. If you want to hear more that's pretty indicative of their material I would suggest "Higher" , "Say that You Will", "Jaws" and "Bloodsport". Thread the Needle is the early work and I think they hadn't found their stride quite yet.

Of course Babymetal is pretty popular riding that line between pop and metal so their is a market. This is a different style of pop of course.

Ok first off: mega thanks to whoever requested this. I've found a new band! Thank you! Secondly, I'd like to point something out. Bryan, one of the things I have always appreciated about you is that you never stop the song. You may make a quick comment, but you never stop the art. Thank you for that. Keep on that. There's nothing more frustrating than watching a reaction vid and having them stop the flow of art a thousand times. Keep on it Bryan.

Higher from Sleep Token is the one to check out IMO. Gorgeous up until the last minute then crushingly heavy. If you want djenty pop then this is surely it.

Should have done The Offering, Higher or Jaws instead of this as a first look for the band.

Considering this is the first song in their discography, I thought it was a great introduction. That's exactly where I started and I continued to listen in chronological order, and I'm fully in love with them.

As a casual listener maybe but you do the guy no favors in growing his channel if you don’t consider song popularity in suggestions. I go back to his ONLY deftones reaction/listen... completely wrong impression and song choice and he hasn’t revisited. You get one shot usually getting a reactor to do an obscure/non mainstream band, should make it count, just my opinion.
@RadDadfield
@RadDadfield 4 жыл бұрын
@@Angwysh that's a fair point. I guess I'm just giving him the benefit of the doubt based on his reaction to this song and what I know of his musical sensibilities. After watching this, I have no doubt that he'll want to continue diving deeper and exploring their range.

Please do more Sleep Token. I've very recently gotten into them and their progression and growth is incredible. This is actually their first single, and it only goes up from here.

Well this is very early material so I hope finally others will speak up loudly and push the more popular tracks :) I try to hear out a lot of things you've picked in other reactions.. liking the music breathe, vocal layers, synths over crushing riffs. Glad you enjoyed it man

Dude, fantastic pick! This track has a lot of the surface level things I love and seems to have some nuance that I'll pick up on subsequent listens.

This song is from their 1st EP of three songs. Listened together, the feel that you get from this song feels a lot more complete and establishes their sound. The second EP, also three songs, is an evolution of that sound. Then they got their singles, I highly recommend Jaws. They released their full album last year which showcases a full variety of pop / djenty music. The Offering is a pure fusion of pop and djent that I think you’re looking for. If you can’t tell, I stan this band very hard haha, love the work and the reaction!

Cool. 'The Offering' got me into Sleep Token, so I bought Sundowning, but had not heard any of their older stuff until now. Good luck with the 'who they are' tho! Courtney from Spiritbox said she'd worked out who the are in a recent live stream, but that she won't say.

Sleep token’s music has had me intrigued for a bit but haven’t dove into it yet. Like your thumbnail says, I find their poppy emotional djent play together- plus I think his voice is killer.

First off, love that you have some interesting insight to add to your videos, buddy! Makes for a much more entertaining react video in my opinion, so kudos! Anyway, been obsessed with Sleep Token since early last summer, and I love that you recognized their blend of pop and djent. You mentioned wanting to hear those two genres “blended” more rather than separated into sections. I’d highly recommend checking out Blood Sport or The Night Does Not Belong To God. Peace, and keep it up! 👍🏼

Sleep Token is such a hard group to describe. Sometimes they sound like Ed Sheeran, sometimes they sound metal. But it's beautifully melded together. 7:30 into a 20 minute video: "I don't know that I have a lot to say about this..." Classic Bryan lmao

Yep, totally going to market Djenty-Pop! I'm not familiar with Sleep Token so at first, I wasn't sure, but I really like where this song ended up going. That brought the whole song together nicely.

Oh yes! Sleep token rules ! I needed few listens before getting into them tho. It's an excellent band/project! If you want some awesome Progressive Death Metal Album (BlackwaterPark-Opeth Era type of music) you should listen to Black Crown Initiate - Holy Silence. They released an album this year, and it's a serious challenger for my AOTY. They are master of contrast between brutality and moody/calm moments, like this song !

I’ve seen this band mentioned, but this is my first listen. I may be wrong, but this is very reminiscent of post-metal to me, which I LOOOVE. So glad I watched this.

The first time I heard Sleep Token I reacted as "Okay, long time I havent't heard something I could call *new*". I think this is not the best pick for a first time Sleep Token tho. Check The Offering or Jaws for a good sample of how they can blend heavy 8-string riff and super melodic singing lines

Sleep Token is so good all around, I don't know what to suggest. From the second album, I'd go with Calcutta. It's much closer to the new material than the first EP. From Sundowning, The Offering or Higher have the best general overview of their sound. Blood Sport, though, is probably their best display of emotion.

Higher or The Offering are other great tracks. The band balances Pop and Djent on a lot of songs, their album is very melodic, and the singer has a lot of space to play around in. Beautiful voice and great songwriting. The song Sugar is another heavy poppy song. I know, sounds weird!

Unleash the Archers can write good songs and good music. React to Legacy off their new album Abyss. It's seriously a tremendous song and music, I'd call it a masterpiece of both skills

You have too many fans named Jonathan. I hereby challenge the other Jonathan's to a Highlander duel: there can be only one! Anyway, I've heard of these guys but never heard them. This was really cool, though. I think your analysis mostly mirrors my own, though I would say that the djent section sounds closer to the atmospheric sections in Meshuggah's music rather than Periphery; the outro especially reminded me of the outro of Straws Pulled at Random, though perhaps a bit more static in nature. Your commentary on pop VS "good music" was interesting. I get what you're saying but I'm not sure I'd put it like that. It's almost like saying you can write a good sonnet without writing good poetry. I'd be more inclined to say that pop songs are just music with a very different set of standards for what counts as "good music." Like, I'm not sure why catchiness, which often means using melody and rhythm in conjunction to create something that's memorable, is less innately musical than complex key changes or advanced harmonies or anything else.

I want to like Sleep Token, but the djent sound bores the pants off me. They remind me a little of Deftones in how they combine the melodic and heavy sections, just within a metal context. Perhaps I'll mull this over a bit and revisit them later.
