I want to show you how I inspect and then wrap my Hyperco Composite Leaf Springs and while I am at it let's discuss why I think the Fiberglass leaf spring can be an advantage on your street stock race car. If you paying attention you might see the left overs from when I used to run the FastBoy system on my Leafer so I also talk a little bit about how the fast boy system works and why I don't use it anymore :)

Could you maybe do a video on the “Fast Boy” setup? I have read some old forums but struggle with the concept.. Thanks for all the shared wisdom I really enjoy your content 👍

hmmm, I got mixed feelings on this one. I did it for 3 solid years and by that third year I had it figured out and came to the conclusion it was not a good setup for several reasons. I'm a bit concerned that if I explain it that even though I may explain why it hurts you overall, people will try it. And then because there is so little info I will end up with a lot of converstaions and phone calls happening where guys are looking for more info, thoughts, solutions while the whole time I would be like "yeah, Its complicated and has issues" and they would just end up even more frustrated 😠 Its fast. yep. and very very inconsistent with track changes and spring wear. really want to kinda avoid this one if I can sir. it'd be a can of worms for me.

When I lost my first set of spring do to a wreck I should have went to a spring shop and had a set built but I chose to go to a Landrum malti leaf spring and had to replace them for every race night, I did have a very long biscuit pull bar on the car to, the only disadvantage with the pull bar I lost side bite but gained forward bite but I went through a pile of leaf springs
@DIRTRACELIFE
@DIRTRACELIFE Жыл бұрын
I've never run a pull bar with springs but could see where it could let you run a much lighter spring than normal. I couldn't afford to replace them constantly so I would re-arch my multi's every so often.

How come rocks can damage the spring, but don't cut through the tape, damaging the spring anyway ?
@DIRTRACELIFE
@DIRTRACELIFE 11 ай бұрын
Eventually they would. The spring is hard as a rock and when a stone hits it, it chips away at the fiberglass layers. Adding multiple layers of duct tape is just adding a cushion that will absorb the blow and keep it from cutting into the fibers. But given enough time it absolutely will cut through that tape.

Yes, I ran the afco 205 left and 176 right. I liked how much beefier they were and they did hold up much better but they took some drive out of my car. If I did it again, I would have just done it on the left and kept a regular on the right.

What's the deal with shackles vs sliders? Do you know anything about leaf setups in regard to street vehicles and fast offroaders that take jumps? Or why truck in particular tend to mount the axles at the middle of the leaf instead of the forward 1/3 position? I have a Ford Ranger that's my daily that I'm trying to soup up and make it handle decently for drift, drag, canyons, and maybe some gravel B roads and whatnot, but I can't afford any long downtime to custom fabricate a 3-link +watts link setup or whatever, so I want to make due with leaf springs for now.
@DIRTRACELIFE
@DIRTRACELIFE 8 ай бұрын
My experience is strictly track based and not applicable to street legal vehicles but I can give you a small bit of feedback: Sliders are not better but they are smoother. The rate change will be more consistent. However they are high maintenance and I would not want to use them unless I was prepared for a regular servicing plan (weekly disassembly and cleaning). The take away the rearends ability to twist and rotate side to side and for that reason they do reduce the tires ability to hold on low grip sufaces. When you move the mount point on the spring toward the center you are making a spring more efficient and linear in it's spring load as it is deflected while decreasing the springs ability to create anti-squat from torque. So it makes the vehicle be able to carry more weight but also less able to maintain grip under acceleration. I hope this helped and good luck with your mods.

@@DIRTRACELIFE Yeah, I definitely don't want to take apart anything on a street car on a weekly basis. Do you have any experience with upside-down hung shackles? Wherein the spring mount part of the shackle faces up, and by design, can allow for a LOT of drop as the shackle swings down? I've read that fast-offroad guys will do this on prerunner builds with trucks that don't already have it (Chevys do it this way) such as my Ranger, or mid 2000s Rams. If you don't have experience with them, could you provide a reasonable guess as to the extraneous effects other than allowing more droop and a lower ride height? Either way, thank you for responding so far, and I'd like to say that one of the things I plan to do to allow MORE axle rotation is to install tiltable perch plates so that as one side compresses, it doesn't bind or try to twist the springs and increase the roll stiffness. Either that, or I'll get spherical-bearing spring eye bushings that do the same. And before you say something, both designs are engineered against lateral movement, so I won't need a Panhard bar or watts link with either. OH! another thing I thought of is the revolver shackle. Crawler guys use those to get the same droop effect as the prerunner guys do, but without flipping the shackle, since it's basically a double-shackle. They also have a pivot in them to allow the springs to tilt/twist as the suspension flexes, therefore eliminating bind and potential spring snapping. Though I'm pretty sure the safer option for going fast would be the flipped shackle perch, if you have any insight on that design, it'd be appreciated as well. Wait, dangit, I thought of something else. Long vs short shackles with spring arch changes to compensate ride height. Also, overall leaf spring angle in regards to the datum line. I'd like some information on that, too, please. Thank you for your time, you have a badass ole' leafer and it looks like it drives like bat outta hell and hooks just as good as the complicated 3 and 4-link cars!

So I have an idea. My track rules say any racing spring, but no composite leafs. Landrum makes the parobolic mono-leaf spring. It's got a 6.5 inch arch just like the multi dirt leafs. I was thinking about trying them out this year just to see what they do. I called landrum and asked their opinion. They said they had dirt racers try them but didn't like them. Said they were actually more geared towards drag racing. We ran them years ago on asphalt with good success. Do you know of anyone that has tried them out on dirt before? What would be your thoughts on it?
@DIRTRACELIFE
@DIRTRACELIFE Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't personally. I think the parabellum would suffer on forward bite and if it's going to fatigue and then also be less effective well . . . I think it's probably not a viable option in my opinion.
