Raising Chickens is our passion. If you want to learn more, get our free Composting Chickens Comic Book.
compostingchickens.com/comic/
In this video, we're going to share with you how to design and manage a composting chicken house with fun. Hopefully, you'll enjoy knowing about composting chickens so let's see the entire video.
How to produce amazing compost right inside your chicken house while letting the chickens do all the work. This chicken house design offers real-time composting, which also eliminates bad odors and cleaning chores.
Learn how to keep happy healthy hens and chickens in your backyard. This video presents, in full detail, how to build and maintain deep bedding under chickens. The hens turn the compost and produce amazing fertility and even better eggs. We have been using this system at Atitlan Organics for many years and always have happy healthy hens and ridiculously amazing huevos.
Chickens are the master compost spreaders. Let them at your compost pile whenever it needs turning, and they will turn it for you. They provide plenty of nitrogen-rich green material in the form of poop as they work the soil with their feet, searching for seeds, bugs, and other goodies to eat.

@@AtitlanOrganics Hey guys I have one question. I wish to have compost at least 1 meter high, but I cant build it from the ground so high. Can I just make a huge pit 50 cm depth in the ground and add additional 50cm wall above ground? Im asking because I have heavy clay soil on my land and Im afraid that somehow water from soil will leach to the pit (Im gonna make a roof of course), and the compost will be too wet. What do you think?

One of the best video I've seen yet. It caught my attention because I had this same idea for wintering chickens indoors. I had planned to build the chicken house on the back of the greenhouse then at the end of the main growing season dispose of the plant waste and waste fruits and vegetables where the chickens will be wintered. Chicken waste is kind of the rocket fuel so it gets mixed in with the compost. Since I hadn't done it yet I wasn't a 100% sure on the number of chickens and the percentage of carbon to add. The video answered all those questions. I had lately seen others raising chickens on compost and it proved out my theory that they'd be happy and healthy. Another source found it significantly increased his egg production. This video has some of the happiest and healthiest chickens I've ever seen. Since I was looking at a seasonable chicken house I had planned to make the back wall removable to make removing the compost easier in the spring but otherwise his approach is very close to what I had in mind. I'm a big free range fan but you do have to use a rotational plan to avoid the issues he describes. Some breeds do poorly in extreme cold weather and all breeds will keep a better condition if they are wintered in a chicken house. The compost also keeps it warm and remember cold chickens need more food to stay warm just like humans and cold chickens produce fewer eggs. A good deep compost bed will keep the house comfortable for your chickens. I know of one other that tried to heat a chicken house with compost but he did everything wrong. His compost was a few inches thick and it was dry so there wasn't enough mass to create heat and dry compost won't decay so once again no heat. A great piece of information for people to know the way he added water to keep the compost slightly moist. The moisture will migrate down so the lower you go the damper it will be which is ideal. Other than that wall issue he's nailed it, a truly great system design and a brilliant explanation of how it works. One other suggestion I'd make is when you start off the compost bed add in some extra food scraps and earthworm then give it a chance for the earthworms to start laying eggs. The chickens will find the earthworms while they are digging giving them extra protein and a little excitement in their lives. Chickens go nuts over worms and insects.

Hey Cary! Thanks for the note. Sorry for the delayed response. Love your idea about the removable wall. sounds great! And right on about weahter conditions. Even in my rotated yards, i keep the house with deep bedding for days when the hens just cant go outside. THere is always this option of leaving them indoors and they love it. And also great about the earthworms. Maybe if i sectioned off a small oortion and put in worms and food aand left it for a few months and then opened it up to the hens that would possibly work. What do you think. Thanks for watching!

14 months ago I first watched this video and it totally changed my perception of what was important when it came to keeping chooks, and I also thought about the ongoing waste that I was loosing and was not cycled back into the system. So I quickly built this version of a coop adjacent to my more traditional model. Over a year now I have continued feeding that active decay cycle beneath my chickens and being guided by my nose as to when to add more carbon etc, I have treated my veggie gardens with the most amazing compost I have ever made and in surprisingly huge amounts. Thank you Atitlan Organics from Western Australia.

This guy is 100% correct. If I got this right, at eight chickens per 2 meters squared, he’s suggesting that they could stay in the hutch all day and night, 24 hours straight. It only is that a little compost factory, but you could go out of town for a day or maybe two, and just leave them food and water. I can think of a whole lot of so called “homesteaders that are dying to take a day off!

I can tell you this does work. I have done this, not as well as he has but well enough to know that you do get really good compost. One thing you do need is moisture. I live where it is quite dry at times so I have installed a sprinkler system to wet everything down once in a while. It works great.
