Composting with Pigs / Raising Pigs in a Small Space (A Deep Litter Pig Pen at ECHO)

While touring ECHO in Fort Myers, we saw this interesting way of raising pigs in a small space via a deep litter pig pen. Even if you don't have a big farm or yard, this would let you raise bacon. Best of all, there was no smell and you end up with a lot of compost. Great setup.

Thanks for showing this. It gives me some ideas for my small farm and future pork in the diet. The pigs seem very content and happy.

Do the pigs turn the bedding? if not, doesn't it need to be aerated??

If the pen is getting wet will it smell?

Yes, that's why it's covered and deep litter. The carbonaceous material soaks up the urine and keeps the nitrogen from off gassing as ammonia. You can now use this composted material as fertilizer.

I kind of feel sorry for the pigs having too live so cramped though. :(

I agree, if you don't have the proper space for a pig to naturally roam and be a pig then you need get smaller livestock.

We're talking poor farmers, though - not rich Americans with lots of space and access to abundant calories. This is a system for them.

+David The Good I dunno, I think that space would be better suited for meat chickens or rabbits than a pig. Pennstate extension recommends 50 square feet per pig (too small for fully grown pig IMO), the university of Florida extension recommends 100 square feet per pig for sandy soils and 200 square feet for clay soils. Other guides recommend only 2 - 4 pigs per acre. I'm in the later camp, raising pigs myself from experience I would also recommend 2 - 4 pigs per acre. Sometimes Its better to buy from someone who has the space and the means to raise livestock humanely. I'm not saying the pigs in the video are suffering (nothing in comparison to factory farming) but they could be doing better. I recommend NPF (natural pig farming).

Have you ever seen how cramped are commercially breed pigs, the ones you most certainly eat? This is luxury "hotel" they have there (in the video) compared to majority of pigs. Pig space shown in video is average size for normal breeding and some farms that have space and time even make outer space where they can walk freely.

You're making all these good videos about gardening and then you ruin it by advocating for animal abuse? This pig seems far from "content and happy" as someone in the comments suggested. And how should it be, trapped in a tiny crate where it can't see anything but metal walls and a dirt floor? How could someone with even just a sliver of compassion do this?

I’m appalled seeing this, So angry . That pig is living a life of hell the man saying he is fine in that box is not fooling anyone, that cruelty It’s death roll for a pig or any animal kept in a concrete block, I bet that meat taste tressed and horribly bad……. Disgusting

Pigs arent humans. They dont want the life you think they want. They want food, water, shelter, and to not be prey. Hush with the crying
