Nicely done sir. I have thought about doing this to my lathe, but was concerned about rigidity issues. Looking through your comments eased my apprehension a bit. I'll give it a try. Oh, and the wrong turn issue, I have found turning the wrench upside down is the easiest fix.....lol. Thanks for the video!

Before our rant, wanted to say very nice job sir!!! Your patience and skills are impressive 👏 You where speaking about people and all this automation(CNC and the like). We here @ HR would rather see things made by hand 99.9% of the time, for one, anyone who is gonna spend their precious time in this earth doing something, is most likely going to do their damn best to make it correct except one particular country we won't mention....Great Wall of... well you can fill the gap there, Secondly, automation is replaced knowledge of REAL SKILLS in making things, replaced learned skill with slapping on a keyboard, and Thirdly automated stuff is left up to computers, and well let's face it, most time computers, machines theirselves and rest is made in a land where they seem to not care about specifications 99.9999% of the time!!! Again Not Mentioning A Particular Land..AHH WHAT THE HECK, YOU ALL KNOW THAT LAND OF NEW MACHINERY THATS HAS ALL THAT GREASE, GRIME AND GRIT YOU GET FROM CHINA, WHOOPS 🤫🤫🤫 WE DID SAY IT 😉

Sure just note how I hold the hand piece, it's a bit strange @ first but with practice becomes second nature. The grip opposes the force the burr causes. Good luck mate
@iamtheomega3 жыл бұрын
that's great that you at least attempted that huge cutter, my 1.5 hp mill might handle it, make it plunge, but w/ mini mill might have to relieve/reduce the top and bottom of each tooth so only periphery did the cutting, lessening friction (?), and using lube/coolant if HSS.. that diamond encrusted "beast" looks ideal, but another one might be to take a slitting saw arbor, with custom adapter, and install a (reduced) fiber cutting disk "nub" (after using up 2 of the 4 inches), or several stacked up depending what mini mill can handle...
@stevohdee81183 жыл бұрын
Thanks for Yr message, I really thought the horizontal cutter would work (2 1/2" x 5/16") but until we try we don't know. The fibre cutting disc would probably work, good idea, we'll wait to see if anyone tries it, cheers

Cool results Stevodee ...... 👍👍😎👍👍. This video showed a little better how you grip the engraver body, but much of your grip was partially out of frame. I think I understand. I have more engraving questions if you don't mind - 1. It appears you possibly mark the text out with a ink pen first and then engrave over those marks? 2. What kind of burr do you use? 2. Any equipment purchase recommendations? Maybe you could do a tip-n-tricks video on engraving as opposed to to answering these questions here? I'm confident many of your subscribers would like to see that. Especially since I've searched youtube for hints and virtually everything already uploaded by others is rubbish. Cheers....... Joel
@stevohdee81183 жыл бұрын
No probs, I use an artline pen for marking, the burrs are inverted cone style, u get them from dental or lapidry supplies or maybe shoe repair supplies. U may even ask @ local engraving kiosk in shopping centres for some used ones. Go ebay & search dental micromotor, they're about $130 with hand piece, I have an escort 3 & a marathon 3, I think they're the same unit. Been thinking of doing vid series on engraving for some time, watch this space ha, hope this helps, cheers

@@stevohdee8118 - Thanks again 🙏. I’ve got a kit on order. Lots of clones out there for sure with a huge range of prices. Hopefully I’ve picked a quality one. Ordered burrs too - some HP-35 and HP-39 inverted cone carbide burrs. Apparently lots of different sizes, so I’ll give those a try. Joel…. 😊

Did you try parting? Any noticeable rigidity issues? Seems like a lot of meat to remove. I'd love to do that mod, so I'm curious about your experiences. Great vid as always!
@stevohdee81183 жыл бұрын
Gday Dan, not sure what you mean by parting, rigidity is minor but that horizontal milling cutter just didn't do what I thought, go the diamond beast, that works great, cheers
@ironhead653 жыл бұрын
@@stevohdee8118 sorry for not being clear. You cut material from the compound of your mini lathe. That is usually the weak point in our lathes. Personally, I haven't had issues with parting off material using a HSS parting tool. While I have a strong desire to get the same easy compound adjustment, I don't want to lose what little strength my mini has. So, I was curious how hard you pushed your lathe, if you have noticed any different behavior.

Very nice, SteveO! Since no one else asked, where did you find the 40mm x 3mm Beast? I watched the milling cutter sharpening video and read through the comments but couldn't find any info. @@stevohdee8118 Thanks, SteveO: found them and placed an order. I was searching for “40mm Diamond Wheel.” Even looking for “disk” didn’t work, I had to use “disc.” Now I have to figure out how to get a 8mm shank into the 1/4” chuck on my die grinder. Best regards, Charlie

Hey Charlie, My electric grinder does about 10,000- 27,000 revs, u must have some sort of rigid setup in mind. Just checked speed on mill when I did it, about 1000rpm. So how u doin it?
@ChazzC3 жыл бұрын
@@stevohdee8118 Hi, Steve, My die grinder goes up to 30,000 RPM but has a 1/4" collet which is why I needed the 8mm:1/4 adapter. I also have a 4-1/2" angle grinder that runs at 11,000 RPM and somewhere I have a collet that screws directly to the shaft. If I do the mod I figure that I will use the die grinder or angle grinder working carefully by hand, practicing first on a piece of scrap. I try to keep any grinding well away from the mill or lathe. Best regards, Charlie
I would have used a cheap plastic protractor. HEY! Don't laugh.

Too much trouble and it never looks like a professional made item......I bought a digital protractor, rated at an accuracy of .05 deg..... whatever............that is closer than anyone can eye a protractor degree marking against a scribed line.

I agree, if you need a precise angle use the digital, great device, anythings better than the thing these lathes come with, cheers
