Compression Bags versus Packing Cubes: Which is Better for Packing?

Unlike most people I enjoy packing, it is both like a science and an art. The most commonly used tool to help travelers pack is the packing cube. I've been using packing cubes since the early 2010's and it wasn't until this past year that I heard about compression bags. These aren't your typical compression bags requiring vacuums. All you need to do is put the clothes inside and roll out the dead air. In this video you can see me test the limits of compression bags and packing cubes to see which will be better for packing.

If you pack the compression bags by standing them up making sort of a flat bottom, you can fold the clothes to fit standing up right from the bottom of the luggage creating somewhat of a rectangle when you are finished. They will usually stack better and hold more versus packing them flat . I use them all the time. It also can be adjusted to fit the compartment that way. It works for me.😊

So you mean stacking the clothes in the end of the bag and leaving the other half “empty”? Then kind of rolling the empty half around to press the air out. Am I imagining what you described correctly? 😅

I actually think about packing cubes inside of vacuum bags 😂 I just worry that the zippers may damage the vacuum bags

Finally, someone who packs their packing cubes to the gills. These other KZfaqrs fill them up only abt half to two-thirds full....so unrealistic. I thought the point was to pack as much as you can in as little of a space as you can lol.

It wouldn't work because compression cubes rely on being able to force the air out. Vacuum bags are, famously, air-tight.

Great video! Thanks for showing how each method works. With swimming suits, a ziplock bag separately from the other clothes could work. It then can be put back in the bag, especially if its wet.

I love my air compression bags - easy to roll and clear so you can see what’s in them. FYI: You could have gotten more air out if you packed clothes flat/stacked, and rolled them on the ground instead of on top of the divider of your suitcase. Need a firm base to push it out! 👍🏼

Love the look of the cubes and you can add more to the cubes by using a vacuum bag for the small space lifted over. More clothes with the organization!

I just chanced upon your video and was happy to know you were making a comparison which I was also thinking of. I thot of using both too But more so packing unwashed clothing in compressor bags till the next laundry time!!

The compression cubes have two options, regular packing cubes or use to compress if needed to be. I always take out clothing as needed from my suitcase and then it gets closed and locked up. That way I don't have to worry about bugs or a mouse crawling in, or having someone rummaging through my belongings when I am gone. I can't wait to use my cubes. Everything will be so organized! Suggestion: Take along a small bottle of wrinkles gone. With casual wear, after a hot shower you put the t shirt on and the heat from your body can help remove the wrinkles.

Compression packing cubes - best of both worlds 😂 The organisation and ease of access (Konmari-style) of packing cubes, with an extra zipper to compress the air out of the clothes like the compression bags. They are so freaking awesome. You’ll never go back 😜🙃💝

@@BraggworthyAdventures I have the LiteTravel double compression packing cubes and they are brilliant. The zips are super sturdy, the fabric is lightweight and really strong, and the design of the cubes is so that you can roll your clothing inside, and hang the cube when open, and it holds the clothing like a hanging pocket sort of thing. Never seen any other compression cubes with this feature. Way better than having to lay the cube flat and open it fully to get something out!!! This acts like a modular hanging wardrobe!!! 😂🤗💝✌️

I am sure you are aware of this by now but there are better versions of both bags :) someone here already mentioned compression packing cubes, which are amazing. The second is Vacuum space saver bags with the pump and valve. It pulls tonssss of air out and saves a huge amount of space. You do have to pack the little bike pump or just use a vacuum when you get where you are going. Love your energy and video :) hope this helps

Don’t know if this would work but I think I would do 1 large compression bag for heavier stuff (pants, tops, etc.) then use the smaller cubes for lighter weight clothing and to fill in the gaps. Hopefully that would work and get all clothes in just 1 side of the bag - the other side for shoes, vacuum tool, and misc items. Thanks for sharing!

We flew to Florida last year and used space saver bags. I was able to pack my king size memory foam pillow all of my kids clothes my clothes and my husband's clothes into one large packed bag. I just don't see how cubes could help with space besides helping to keep things stacked and folded 🙈 but I don't unpack a suit case and put things in drawers when we get to our hotel. Bed bugs keep me out so I try to keep things packed up.

I do think bags are much better space savers. The packing cubes may be good for organizing, but you can take more with the space saver bags for sure!

With the compression cube/packing cubes they can be washed in the gentle cyle for a bit, then hung dry. They dry fast because its made of a thick nylon. With the plastic space bag it is harder to wash and dry. It is fine for one time use, or for big items. The brand of the bags are called Bagail from Amazon. It compresses but can be used as a packing cubes as well. It is constructed of 2 zippers. I bought mine in black. The material they use is awesome!

i love the idea of packing clothes but i study in a city where it is -15⁰C during the winter.. this means alot of bulky wooly clothes. thats why cubes arent as efficient when it comes to winter packing!!

I thought the compression bags looked like they would be hard to get in and out of when choosing shirts. I do think the might work for pants though. It’s easier to see which pants I want. The compression might help them take up less space. I do think a mix of bags and cubes makes sense

As soon as you open the compression bags (as long as they aren’t overstuffed) it’s relatively easy to pull things out, but I still prefer shirts in the packing cubes because I can see them easier in a row.

Compression = fewer tems for easier compression. Packing cubes = more items in the bags and press down and zip.

The only issue I have with bags Vice the clothing cubes is convenience. The bags if you want something or are looking for something you have to decompress whereas the cubes you just unzip/zip. NOW you can put the packing cube into the bag and I don’t roll them I just put my body weight on them while they are on the bed and it pushes the air right out and you have a flat bag with the cube inside the bag! 😂

The vacuum bags are clear so you can see what you're looking for. And it doesn't matter if you decompress because generally you open it when you've arrived at your destination and you don't have to vacuum it back up again until you leave.

I. Just going on a r day trip to myrtle beach and I'm just trying to take a carry on . I brought some compression bags but was wondering if I should have gotten packing cubes but for me I think compression bag will def be the go to for my short trip. Because just like 2 of your compression bags should be enough for my things for 4 days :) thanks

It seemed like you were only packing (very squish able) cotton tees. Am I wrong? Would you use cubes for things like skirts? You did say a combination is probably better.

So I currently use one cube for 4 pairs of shorts, 7 t-shirts/blouses and 2 long sleeves and then I use a compression bag for my underwear, socks and swimsuits and I think it works great for my 36L backpack. I think skirts could work very well in the cubes since in a compression bag they would get more wrinkled

You would be able to fit even more in your bags if everything was folded flat and not rolled.

Rolling saves your clothes from getting creased, whereas folding often means you need to iron your items.

@@aminaplummer3294 Rolling was the worst thing I've ever done. I followed all of the video instructions I found and when I got to Europe all of my clothes looked like I'd slept in them for a week. Most hotels in Europe no longer have irons and ironing boards in the rooms. Some will let you borrow an iron, but have no ironing board. We had to find a laundromat and do a quick rinse and dry to get the wrinkles out enough for the clothes to be wearable. With flat fold I seldom have to iron when I arrive.

Hey Hannah- I did use these while traveling. I overstuffed one and broke the ziplock part but that was after months of use. I don’t think they expanded in the air at all. They worked pretty well.

Vacuum bags are good for travelling a to b, but not if u travelling country to country as u have to open all the time the bags so it can rip .so for that i prefer the cubes

Compression bags seems so much better for saving space. Only concern is doesn't the vaccuming process crinkle up your clothes if stored for long enough, especially for formal shirts??

I also am working on being more of a minimalist when travelling and the compression bags look great but I do't see much room for shoes, toiletries/make up, blow dryer, etc......Even on a warm weather vacation I would typically take beach flip flops, running shoes for exercise/hiking, dress shoes for evenings out, etc. Perhaps a bigger suitcase?

No need to roll actually Just zip halfway or three quarter Then press on the bag to release the air inside and gradually zip it up!
