You're welcome, generally you can sit up just about any compressor quickly spoken word and as long as you're not compressing too heavily you'll be fine I mean if you really want to push it you can do about five or six decibels of compression in your speaking voice or if you're just looking the tame the peaks a little bit you know two or three decimals is good for your normal speaking voice, if you want super simple you get like a LA2A or a waves R Vox then all you really got to worry about is one control to determine how much compression you're getting, and everything else is already set up the way you need it but it's amazing how many controls are on some compressors that most people will never even use but some audio engineers who are excellent and really have mastered the craft and compression might use a lot of those extra bills missiles but for average person we just need to worry about attack release and threshold for the most part at least on most compressors

I feel that video should be short and to the point, I hate that when I review a microphone it usually ends up being a bit longer or if you're going into like major details on how to set up a plug-in that might get a little bit longer but I try to keep everything as short as possible because most people probably don't want to sit there for 30 or 40 minutes listening to a story and then a million details before they get into the 5-minute segment about the information that you came there for LOL. I mean some videos just end up being long if there's enough information but I like to try and keep them between like 3 and 10 minutes if possible I'm at the shorter the better is what I say lol. Thanks for checking out the channel

You're welcome and thanks for checking out the video, compression can get pretty complicated for music but when you're just talking, I'd say probably 95% of the compressors out there you can just throw the attack on like 1 millisecond or 3 milliseconds put the release somewhere between 60 and 100 and dial in the threshold till you get the amount of compression you want and you're pretty much good to go with that point. It'll turn the lighter parts down and control the dynamic range of the recording really well. The one you're working on snare drums and kick drums and stuff where it's just a really fast hit and you don't want the compressor to kick on too fast or kick on too slow or yeah that gets complicated but spoken word compression is really simple and probably 95% of every compressor out there you can just set it up the same basic way and then dial in your threshold. I don't know why so many people make it seem so complicated to compress a voice-over properly.

You're welcome, my goal is to make videos that will help out people that speak in the microphones, I started learning voice over engineering a few years ago and it's also become a fun hobby for me, it's a shame that KZfaq compresses your audio quality when you upload videos to KZfaq so they never sound as good as the original recording but I'll tell you what using the right plugins and not overdoing it can make a voice over sound great, there's so many people who probably try and do too much and overdue the compression and everything else and you also have to make sure if you get a gig, Don't do anything to the original recording unless they say it's okay cuz some of those places will get upset as they hire their own audio engineers and they want that engineer to edit the audio of the way they want. You do want to make sure your auditions sound good though so a little bit of editing can go a long way but when it comes to voice over editing as long as you have a good overall recording less is often more I would say

This is good info. So I can use the reaper software with OBS? Will doing so override what I have set now or do I need to manually reset the OBS settings then use reaper? Thanks DL.

You can use their plugins,. The noise gate the equalizer and the compressor all work very good,. I'm going to try and get up a video tomorrow about setting it all up. The noise gate and the compressor that come with OBS or okay but compressor is lacking the ability to see exactly how much compression you're getting so it's very hard for most people to adjust unless they're familiar with a compressor You just kind of have to guess at it like I showed in the video, kind of make some noise at what you think is around your normal speaking voice and then adjusted until you notice it turns you down slightly, too much compression can cause some issues or sounds the sound harsh or something like that, It's nice to have a bar that shows you exactly how much you're getting too much of it

What do you do about feedback when the presenter doesn’t have good mic technique or distance, what can I do to help them help me? I had a press conference yesterday and there was a light hummm in the room not sure what it was from mic, monitors, question mics open, I tried notching out the troublesome freq, same time I felt like I was chasing my tail.
@dannylightning-audio-reviews
@dannylightning-audio-reviews Жыл бұрын
A really high-pitched feedback is generally because the microphone is close too close to a speaker or pointing directly at a speaker you cannot get your microphone close to a speaker or there will be a lot of feedback, if that's happening and it's that just high-pitched squeal that means you need to get further away from the microphone or maybe put the PA speakers in front of you instead of behind you, I don't really know what you're set up was Now when you're fighting a home unfortunately there could be a lot of things like a bad ground in the microphone it could be a bad cable it could be that the cables are shielded properly and they're picking up RF interference and I think mogami gold cables are designed for maximum interference rejection but they're very expensive those won't pick up noise at all, I mean it could be a bad channel on the mixer it could be a bad amplifier, there's a lot of different things that could cause a hum so that's one of those deals that's probably going to require some troubleshooting but without being there or actually being able to hear exactly what it sounded like I can't really tell you exactly what it was or what was causing the problem but I used to do a lot of live music and anytime there was something with the hum it was normally coming from a bad cable but there was an occasional time where it was something else

How to compress incoming spoken vocals in a livestream?
@dannylightning-audio-reviews
@dannylightning-audio-reviews Жыл бұрын
Your streaming software might let you add a filter to the microphone. .. on OBS or stream Labs you can choose the stock compressor as a filter or a vst plugin. This week I'm going to be working on a video showing how to set up stream Labs and OBS and get your audio sounding good, proper gain staging and how to add your compressor, limiter. EQ and noise gate. They don't come with a EQ but the free reaper EQ is great and will work
