Thank you very much for the video! I am super amateur and just recently started recording myself playing cello. I am a professional and need a good recoding(not super pro) and have been using the zoom h5 as a starting point. Could you please do a similar tip video with string instrument, playing classical music? I feel like cutting in this case is much harder! Thanks a lot!!!

Great tutorial as usual. Everything you said is really nice and useful, but there is one unanswered question for beginners - how to get that experience to hear what you want? You, and many others, have been probably just trying out everything and listening to thousands of different recordings to get there and I think there is some knowledge to be shared. Just some thoughts on that, hope this idea will lead you to create another great tutorial for all the beginners out there

Hey Bandrew. Thanks for the info. Is the process exactly the same on analogue gear? And also, if getting analogue gear, specifically 500 series modules, do you recommend getting an eq with as many bands as possible? Cheers

Do you know of any affordable audio interfaces that allow for such a detailed EQ in hardware/saved on the device itself? Obviously, there is no post-production when live streaming and the fewer software plug-ins/apps are required, the better. The ones (more expensive) I know only have high/mid/low controls which often even make the sound worse.

Well, he just explained his process, so you should be able to do it yourself. The ear-training part takes experience, but his process, if you practice it, will achieve that. Have patience, monitor at a low-ish level, and compare often.

I think they call this grading right? My problem is I hear so many "whistles" when I boost single frequencies to only 9db. I'm afraid I'll cut too much. I'm actually having problems with my mic recordings having a sound like....like I was speaking into a tin can. I can't decide if it's my ears or something else. I might send it to the BSP.
@Podcastage2
@Podcastage2 3 жыл бұрын
That's why I say that you need to hear the frequency before you try to find it by boosting the narrow q. I say that because whenever you sweep a 12dB narrow q band around, you're going to hear a lot of shit that sounds terrible. You need to know exactly what you're trying to find prior to searching for it with that EQ band.

My EQ is high pass at 72 and low pass just over 12k. I can't hear past 13.5 and my voice really doesn't register past 10. I think I could tweak a little more, but no one really cares on zoom...

Lol I thought it sounded worse after the eq. I guess it truly is subjective. I usually go to a boosted low end to get that radio sound and then I'll reduce the frequency with sibilance (my mic is the rode nt2a with a low pass filter and compression pre applied which gives a realtiveley flat response)

Nobody has managed to explain with any clarity what an “offending” frequency is, though I think a BAndrew’s is one of the better descriptions out there. That said, when you sweep anything at levels like 12db, everything sounds horrible, so I’m of the opinion that this method is not the silver bullet it is so often portrayed to be. I think one of the better techniques that compliments any technique is that of using a known, professionally mastered sample as a reference.
