In this video I demonstrate how to measure for compression socks, as well as discuss compression sock sizing and fit. Properly fitted compression socks will offer the most benefit for your needs, whether that be to relieve aching or swelling in the legs after a long shift at work or to aid in muscle recovery during running or exercising. Taking measurements for compression socks needs to be done correctly for the best fit, and it this video I walk you through the process of measuring on yourself step by step. I also review the various levels of compression and what their mmHg measurements mean. I, myself, currently use two brands of compression socks: CEP Compression and PRO Compression, but there are many different brands and style of compression socks and finding the best one suited for you is key.
As a registered nurse and nurse practitioner, I have been wearing compression socks for many years working long 12 hour shifts to help with aching and swelling. I also wear compression socks while running and training for marathons to decrease muscle aches and help speed up recovery. Any time I am traveling for an extended period by car or plane, I always wear compression socks to help with blood circulation and to decrease any likelihood of developing blood clots. Compression socks also provided great relief postpartum when I was experience a lot of swelling and aching in my legs.

Great information! My doctor recommended I wear compression socks since I'm a truck driver. I called him back to ask what level of compression. He said, "Oh, about medium." That was disappointing. Thanks for making this video!

Thank you for this video, especially the tip about calf sleeves. I am planning a European plane trip and Need compression socks. I discovered the sleeves just a month or so ago and thought” these are wonderful, so much more comfortable” You however stressed this is not for long haul flight travel. Thank You so very much! I will still wear the sleeves for work etc and while walking while in Europe but will find a better fitting sock for plane travel.

Unfortunately I can't measure with my ankles and legs not swollen because they are constantly swollen at the moment so I'll just find a middle ground between my old measurements and my current swollen ones 😅

Why did you measure around the ankle as there's no ankle measurement on the Pro Compression chart? Not sure about the CEP but I'm confused that none include it as feel it's important. Tks for these videos!

When I got mine years ago, the lady at the Pharmacy did the measurements. My Dr. told me that if you have excess water in your legs the stockings will drain it out and stop the swelling. They might even help a bit with Heal Spurs and Plantar Fasciitis, of which I both have. I did notice yesterday I had to use the washroom a little more than usual so they must be taking excess water out of the legs.

@@thesunnyedge Hi Gorgeous, well actually it wasn't the Pharmacy but they are in the same building side by side. They have a section there where they sell or rent wheelchairs, Canes, Walkers, Toilet risers, stockings, etc. She did the measurement so I got the right ones. They were not cheap if I recall. I am diabetic with very little swelling in the legs. I first got them about ten years ago and only use them occasionally. My heel spurs or Plantar Fasciitis just decided to flare up this week for the first time in years. I wore them for two days with no relief. I have to see my Dr. on Tuesday and mention this to him. Years ago I had 6 shockwave therapy treatments on just my left foot and that did the job. I am suspecting by whats going on now, It is the heel spurs. They might be inflamed? The Dr. told me about ten years ago that when you wear them they will take excess water out of your legs to get the swelling down. I am 5ft 11, 225 pounds. I was 248. Coming down gradually. Thank you for your useful tips. I have a question. Right after my varicose vein "operation" (foam was injected into my curly veins) about 15 years ago I was told to wear long compression stockings for 4 to 6 weeks after the treatment and if I could, even most of the time in the future. I followed that advice for perhaps 7-8 years and then decided I´d rather wear normal stockings. Now, as I am getting ready to retire and I am very healthy otherwise, a few varicose veins are back and my ankles seem to show signs of swelling. A doctor quite recently looked at my ankles and said some veins do not seem to be able to pump the blood up and I need to wear compression socks. I was measured by him and bought 2 pairs of tight compression knee socks. With the help of rubber gloves I get them on nicely. My question is this: In the evening when I pull my socks off, there always is a crease on top of the skin of my ankle for a while. Then it disappears. While wearing the socks and looking down I also can see a wrinkle in the sock on that spot. Obviously, the ankle is the spot where the leg turns like the letter L and becomes the foot. It does not look nice. Is it normal or should I look for a different/shorter size? All the best.

When I put my socks in the morning (knee longer) , there is no fold at the ankle but at the end of the afternoon, there is 2-3 folds. Why is that???

I got varicose veins when I was pregnant and very bad swelling. After I had the baby my swelling went down a lot but varicose veins stuck around… I gave birth 8 months ago 😢 my varicose veins are now traveling up my thigh and now causing me discomfort. I hate it, I’ve always been a thinner to average weight and this pregnancy, I gained so much weight. I lost half of it but still have the other half to lose. But my question is, since my varicose veins are now In my thigh should I get thigh high compression socks? Or should I look into compression shorts with knee high compression socks? Gosh I hope they go away. Im 30 years old and not only does body changes already take a toll but varicose veins make me even feel more gross about myself. I could cry everytime I look at them

my Dr said to get xlarge they fit fine in the leg but all x large for women r for a person wearing a 14 or more size shoes I wear a 8 or 9 shoe so if i put the socks pm with my heal in the heal the toe is about 6 " to long help

I have to wear felt pads on the bottom of my feet because of callous on both feet. Getting comppression socks are hard to pull over the felt. Can you show how to get the sock over the pads?

Great question! Whatever provides the most comfort! I know a lot of pregnant women opt for the full leg support. I have seen maternity compression socks on Amazon that are full-length and have a maternity waist band (though I haven’t tried them).

I'm looking to buy CEP compression socks after your recommendation. However I've bought socks in the past that came up just over my knee and so pinched behind my knee. I suffer from thread veins so that's not any use. I was wondering how tall are you, or if you could even share your knee crease to floor measurement so I can get an idea of how long they would be on me. I'm 5'7", so maybe the other socks were just really long but they're too expensive to buy if they won't suit me. Thanks!

Yes, of course! My floor to knee crease measurement is 16 inches and I’m 5’6”. I love the CEP socks, those are my absolute favorite. If you have any other questions, let me know! ☺️

Compression socks can help relieve symptoms associated with lymphedema but it is important to be properly measured and fitted for compression socks when using them for a medical condition. Talk to your doctor and see what they recommend!

Yes, they can help prevent spider veins and varicose veins from getting worse. I’m not sure what class1 is either but Amazon is usually pretty amazing about returns if the item doesn’t work out.

Most OTC/In store compression socks are 15-20. Anything higher requires a prescription...

I'm on amlodipine which swells my feet. My PA recommended compression socks but none were prescribed because I don't have a medical condition that swells the feet its only a side effect of the medicine. Would you still recommend the sports compression socks that you mentioned in the video?

Are toeless compression socks good for travel since they go past your ankle to your arch or do I need to buy full toe socks? (I know you said knee to ankle is not good.). Thank you

Yes, they should be just as effective. Toeless compression socks (not calf sleeves) are sometimes preferred by individuals to allow more ventilation or toe movement or to wear with sandals.

If it’s a quality brand. There are a lot of lesser quality compression socks sold on Amazon so just do your research.
