Compressor oil return in an air conditioning or refrigeration system is super important. Oil failure controls are implemented on larger semi hermetic compressors that utilize oil pumps to ensure the compressor is receiving the oil it needs to function. Mechanical oil failure controls are very simple in the way they operate but do confuse some technicians. I have seen too many oil failure controls get misdiagnosed and replaced when in fact it was an oil return issue causing the problem.

Great job! What are your thoughts if the condensing unit is located below the evaporator. Do you need any traps or an inverted?
@HVACKnowItAll
@HVACKnowItAll 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure if I've ever seen a trapped liquid line tbh. But yes an inverted trap on the evap outlet is a good call.

When commissioning a new compressor with oil at the right level in the sight glass, will oil level go lower on the sight glass after compressor start up?, due oil getting trapped in the piping? and how long will take for the oil movement to stabilize? and how to estimate the additional oil needed to add to the compressor?

Hi, it's not easy to determine the return time nor the quantity of oil needed. It depends on compressor's size, circuit length, size of condenser, size of evaporator, type of application etc. Generally speaking on condesing units, keep track the compressor's oil sight glass, and add if its starts going around at 1/4. Regarding quantity it all depends on the size of the application. In racks things are easier as you usually have extra safety features like oil level sensors and big oil reservouers to counter the oil loss.

Im having an issue that i beleve is an electrical issue but cant figure out. Newly installed copleland compressor keeps tripping oil, im taking pressure from pump and crank case get 48-52 psi, sight glass on oil float is 3/4 screens are clean on float and compressoras but switch tripps about 1 1/2 mins after start up

The control works off pressure difference, what's the crankcase pressure and whats the control set for?
@hvacRtech90
@hvacRtech90 Жыл бұрын
@HVAC Know It All its on a rack crank case goes from 39-55psi oil pump goes anywhere from 90-115psi I'm currently on the third oil switch it's a new compressor, there were a lot of shorts in the control voltage it's an old site and wiring was never updated. But can't find any electrical issue going to the switch and since I've installed this switch and no longer trips after the time delay it runs for hours while I'm on site and then it trips when I'm not there , im heading back again today to pretty much just watch it and see if pressure ever drops because the whole time I'm there I'll watch it and my oil pressure stays around 49 to 52 differential

@HVAC Know It All I feel like I'm at a loss on this one. Which is why I'm commenting on a KZfaq video I tried talking to Copeland tech support and my supervisors and no one really has any idea of what would be causing it. Currently have no circuits flooding back this is a weird rack though as my three low temp compressors discharge into the three medium temperatures compressor suction header and there's a de superheat valve that shoots liquid into the discharge line of the low temp compressors to cool it off. the compressor that keeps tripping oil is on the medium temp . I thought it might be issue with the de superheat valve I adjusted it a few times it's currently set to open if the line raises above 80°

@HVAC Know It All I got it, it was electrical, and there is a separate relay for head fans/oil pressure switch shares voltage with head fan. The relay is sticking randomly and sending power to oil switch with the compressor off. Damn this call kicked my ass
