That is easily one of the best descriptions of compressors and one of the best demonstrations of what they do I've ever seen. It's amazing how you kept that video so short and succinct and hit the nail so fucking on the head dude. Thank you cuz I'm going to use that to explain it to others.

This is a very goog explanation for the basics of a compressor. Please note however guys that there is far more use of compressors than just this dynamic control.

Devious machines duck seems to omit the need for a compressor . Selecting the part to either reduce or attenuate the waveform or creat certain effects if one wants pumping etc..

good video. I normally don't apply plugins to my inputs except to avoid clipping. So you're saying I should use this during vocal/instrument capture/record or can I do it after by just using a basic limiter?

Both! I've done other videos on this channel explaining more about how to use multiple instances both before and after the 'file print'

The most common combination though is to put the 1176 first and set it up as a peak limiter and than the LA-2A.

Awesome video! Thank you. So if I understand correctly on 4:1, it means that your sound can go up to 3.99... dB without activating compression. But hit 4 dB, and it cuts off 3dB? In other words, it'll drop to the next 1 dB, thus making you fluctuate between 3dB and 1dB if you're constantly in that 3-4dB range? Does that make sense? lol
@nightjaronthegate
@nightjaronthegate 2 жыл бұрын
4:1 means that the difference between the threshold and the input level will be reduced by a ratio of 4:1. 1dB above threshold will be reduced to 0.25dB above threshold. 4dB above threshold will be reduced to 1dB above threshold. 24dB above threshold will be reduced to 6dB above threshold.

Wow really? There is value in many things with this vocation/hobby/passion, and sometimes that's in providing advice and experience to others. If you feel that is not a comfortable or desired place for you, then maybe it is time? Not trying to knock you brother, just trying to provide some perspective. We all had to start somewhere.

Attack is not how long it takes for the compressor to react (nor release) the compressor reacts immediately after the threshold is reached. The attack is how long it takes after threshold is reached to achieve 2/3 (or some other arbitrary number depending on style) compression. Release is how long it takes to get that 2/3 back.
@chrisliepe
@chrisliepe 2 жыл бұрын
@@FASTFASTmusic The 2/3 addition to my information does not point to my definition being wrong. Perhaps incomplete but not wrong. Does knowing this additional information help you use a compressor more effectively? Does not knowing it keep you from using a compressor in a musical way? It's great when people add quality information to a topic! Maybe next time, you could phrase it in a way that is helpful and from an additive vantage point! It sounds like you have some perspectives and information that could benefit the community!
