So, you've decided to buy a handgun and get your carry permit. In this video I attempt to present some of the questions you'll need to ask yourself and decisions you'll need to make.
It's a trial & error process, to some degree, but maybe my 21 years of legal carry experience can at least offer up some of the relevant questions you'll need to ask yourself.

@Nexgcs, Yes, but the purpose of carrying is to help ensure that you get a chance to see if you CAN live with it. You can only use deadly force if your life is in immediate jeopardy, so you certainly won't have to live with it if you do nothing; you might not live with anything, a clear conscience OR not. At the point of my life's being threatened, I'll care very little who the evil one's family is or why they didn't raise the critter better. :-) I'll reflect on it later if I survive.

@@1957robertjohnson, private property owners who don't want guns on their property are well within their rights as property owners. The fact that private property owners choose not to allow guns doesn't make the state unfriendly towards guns - the State not being friendly towards guns would make it unfriendly. And the State of Arizona is pretty friendly towards guns overall even if some private property owners aren't.

@@armedarkansan9636 my point was that a lot more private property owners don't want guns on their property, compared to fives years ago. That is an indicator of a state's change. I think people in Arizona are going to see more attempts at restrictive gun laws. Unfortunately I think that will be a national trend. Democrats have taken their gains in the House as a mandate on gun control.

I recently purchased my only handgun. To choose I went to a gun retailer with an indoor firing range. I explained to a clerk that I was making a decision to purchase a handgun for concealed carry and I wanted to hold different guns to see how comfortable and natural they felt in my hand. He laid out about seven guns on the counter. I handled each one and narrowed the selection down to three. Then asked how much each gun cost. Thats when I eliminated a really nice Kimber. I then choose to consider a Springfield Armory XDS. I rented the gun and purchased some ammo and targets. The gun felt natural in my hands and for a novice I was pretty accurate with it. Later, after saving some money for the purchase I "pulled the trigger."

I’m looking to decide between an XD and a 509 mid size at the moment. Would be my first gun as well. I really like the feel of the Mod 2 but it looks like they only make a subcompact one these days, so unless I find it used I might be SOL. The biggest challenge to me has been just getting guns in my hand. Stores are either too busy or out of stock. It’s been frustrating.

It depends on the state. In Tennessee it's actually a legal issue if a business owner has his or her business marked properly. With schools, of course, it's a legal issue, too, even private schools. Just be sure to check the law.

@job1181, They can work; it's just that a lot of people see them on Starsky & Hutch or something and end up with a loaded gun pointed at everybody they encounter (out the back), especially when they grab it. Nothing wrong with a full size 1911 if you can carry it all day with whatever your attire. Not many in the real world find it practical - some do. I'm just posing the questions people need to ask themselves and that I've worked through myself.

Good point. Just about all respected trainers will give the same advice. The reality is, though, I think it's just too attractive a method for carry for some people, especially with all the specialized bags/purses on the market designed for it. I suppose the same argument could be made for ever leaving a firearm in one's car or truck. There are probably more cars broken into than purses snatched. I have a feeling that if I were female that I just would not be able to resist a good gun purse.

I obtained my Ohio Concealed Handgun License in 2012, renewed in 2017. I did make a shoulder holster for my 45 acp 1911-A1, and only carry it when I'm wearing a coat or a jacket in cooler weather. I also have a Cobra Patriot 45 (45 acp). I made a holster for it too, that I wear inside my pants while clipped to my belt. I also wear an over sized shirt to reduce printing and only button up a few buttons at the bottom of my shirt, to make my handgun less likely to be seen yet easy enough to get it out if I have to.

I have read that General Patton carried a small, Remington 380 in a waist holster between his belt and shirt. He called it his "insurance gun." Of course, open carrying the Colt SAA 45 and/or the S&W Model 27 .357 magnum and/or his Army issued M1911 kept him pretty well armed. In an interview, he once said that he carried the Colt SAA 45 because it was his favorite gun to shoot, it had sentimental value to him because he bought it on the day he got promoted to first lieutenant, and his soldiers loved seeing it on him, but that the S&W Model 27 was for any situation in which he might need a "killing gun" against the Wehrmacht. His Colt SAA had two notches he carved into one of the ivory grips because he killed two 'banditos' belonging to Pancho Villa and he also claimed to have killed six Germans with it in WWI when injured in a bomb crater with a buddy who killed more than six. (edit, I meant WWI in the bomb crater. He and his buddy held off Germans for a day or so before getting back to safety)
@continentalgin
@continentalgin 4 жыл бұрын
UPDATE: I haven't been able to find any corroboration for Patton killing Germans in WWI in an artillery shell crater (not a 'bomb crater'). What appears to have happened was that Patton was immobilized inside a shell crater on the combat front line, along with a buddy. His buddy helped him with a minor leg injury and the two of them held off attacking Germans for about a day and a half. Reportedly, his Army buddy shot and killed numerous Germans, but it is not clear whether Patton himself shot and killed any. He was armed with his trusty SAA .45 and possibly an M1911, as well. Don't know if he was carrying a rifle at the time. After the enemy retreated, medics carried Patton back behind the lines for medical attention and he fully recovered within a few days. It may have been something like a pulled ham string. In addition to his beloved SSA .45 and S&W Model 27, his Army issued M1911, and his .380 pocket Remington, he was also known to enjoy plinkng with a .22 rifle, especially in Africa. About his gun philosophy, he always told his soldiers, "Do not aim to wound or warn, always aim to kill."

Find a handgun that you can shoot well and consistently. Be willing to find a carry method that works well for you and your chosen piece. Simple but not easy. For me, it is a compact 1911 and a 4 O'Clock holster. I have extensive experience with the 1911 and the 4 O'clock is easily hidden and accessible. Find what works for you. Good approach: ask the questions. Also the biggest issues after those addressed here (what gun, how to carry, etc) is 1)awareness of surroundings. 2) Being capable mentally to shooting the bad guy. In the latter case I have mentally rehearsed the outcome, essentially programed myself to react. The training is essential, but the mind must be trained also. Then there is the aftermath. But that is another topic for another day. Enjoyed the video.

You are a great American patriot that really cares, unlike some of these armchair warriors want to be’s that totally neglect gun safety. You remind me of my grandfather that served in WWI in France on the front lines. At the age of 8 he had me learning to shoot an old single shot .22 rifle with a small scope on it. We grew up in southern West Virginia in the mountains (life was good). I’ve always carried with me what he taught me in life and I’m a better person for it today. Now at the age of 63 I just got my first concealed permit, we now live in NC (west of Charlotte) and I’ve watched your channel for a good while and this old dog is still learning. Thanks for all you do, would love to meet you one day it would be almost be like seeing my grandpa again. God bless.

I am a male and I carry in a shoulder bag. It's a Tactical EDC bag. The bag has a whole mess of velcro on the inside so I took some of that stick and peel velcro and attached it to my holster so that the gun stays in place while I'm walking around. I carry a full size Beretta Px4 Storm, with two extra magazines I have 50 rounds.

Store robbery caught an off duty cop in line. Hands were up while cash register was emptied, then the thug demanded customer's wallets. Cop: "it's in my pocket" then slowly put his hand in the pocket and shot his .380 kel-tec through the pants into the perp's chest. His hip holstered glock would have made a bigger hole but the mutt still ended up on the slab. Since that story, I carry my kel-tec loose in the pocket, the only time I touch the gun is when I slowly take it out at bed time. I'll deal with the lint. I sewed a snap button on all of my gun pockets to prevent it from ever sliding out. was easy.

frank frank I don't want to get in a gun fight over some money, I find situations like this very difficult grey areas where I'd want my finger on the trigger but still tentative. I guess if you can be almost sure of neutralizing the target it's fine. (of course in situation you described, once a criminal sees the badge he might then kill). but I've heard enough stories about shooting gun defensively preemptively, not neutralizing target, and it turns out really bad when robber might not have done anything violent otherwise. of course, it's good to get a criminal off the streets, and to be cognizant of potential innocent bystanders.

Good discussion. Something else to think about.....I've seen people develop back problems from carrying tool belts, and even wallets from having it on one side of their body all the time. It happens over time, not something you notice right away. If a gun has any substantial weight to it, you ought to take care not to develop this sneaky long-term trauma. This is where under the shoulder rigs might be better. At least having a good belt to support it, and a counterweight on the other side.

I have a 380 for backup on my ankle. Looking for a good primary CCW. I passed (100%) using my brother's G30 on my shooting part of the CCW. I would never recommend that UNLESS YOU PLAN TO OWN ONE. But I did plan to own that sweet, smooth, BIG and CONCILIABLE weapon. Then when I went to Walmart to get some affordable "target FMJs", I noticed a pretty big difference in price when it came to ammo/caliber. I live in Wilkes county NC and the closest Walmart is a 10 min. drive. But, you best know someone working there if you want a chance at some .22LRs. Point being... I noticed that the ammo for my .380 was cheaper (but only a couple of bucks) than the .45 ammo by about $3-$7 bucks depending on the brand and the tip. That's -when I saw the .40 Cal. ammo for the same or cheaper price than the .380 I carry as a 2nd/backup. Would love to see some "poor man videos", as it relates to "if you could only carry 1 handgun caliber, what would it be on terms of ammo affordability. Thanks.

don't carry a CZ 75 spo1 for conceal carry. It weights over 2 lbs unloaded. For a self defense gun simpler is better. My choice would be a Glock. Just point and squeeze the trigger, no thought needed. and it is clean , nothing pertruding out the side like decocker, or safeties safeties. In a stressful situation like a gun fight who needs to think about taking a safety off. Just my thought.

Many good points are raised in this clip. Some other things people need to keep in mind is how often they'll train to carry concealed. It's not as simple as it seems in the movies. How do you draw from a light jacket vs a heavy winter coat, drawing from a car, drawing when your wife or kid are with you, stuff like that. And at the end of the day, since you are responsible for each round that comes out of the barrel, are you skilled enough not to be a safety hazard to those around you.
