This 1/10 scale, 6m long, Concorde jet model crash at the Jets Over Czech 2013 was both an attractive and sad part of the show for anyone among spectators as well as an unfortunate and a total loss for Franz Höllinger, the unlucky pilot from Austria.

On repeated looks at this incident it appears that someone underestimated the pressure build up in the square fairing on those engines. All was fine till the plane looked like gaining speed when the pressure in the engine fairings must bave risen beyond what the anchorage of those fairing could take. All one needs to do to find our how much pressure can build up is to open the window of a car and extend the hand out to catch the air coming over the windscreen. It is not something to take lightly. I would estimate that the plane was travelling more than 90 mph when the incident happened. Pity, a great pity and at times like this I tend to be speechless at knowing what the builder must have felt. The pilot was pretty fast to fly it inverted for a time, but by them the high speed air ramming through some gaps in the fuslage must have affected some of the remaining control systems. Congratulations for the courage shown in building such ambitious structure. It flew well and so graceful, so that is a great satisfaction.

If you look closely at the final few seconds from disintegration you can see that the plane was in a bit of a dive and over speeding. Then you can notice that right before the first engine pod separated, the pilot jerked the plane up.that over stressed the left engine nacelle, and it fell off, leading to the plane's demise

.......................that was the most amazing almost surreal crash sequence, so graceful strangely enuf . Just watched this again. Still hard to believe, such a shock to see that happen. Magnificent scale aircraft & credit to the owner/builder, hope he designs a better flight control system next time:-) Appears one of the engine intakes assemblies on the L/H side detached & took out the relevant Elevon, the rest was just a sequence of events even the pilot had no control over.

I'd say that those parts fell of because of flutter. They weren't stiff enough or not damped properly. The plane just hit that critical sweet-spot airspeed during lowpass. It happened to my plane too, same situation. It happens quite often in those faster, bigger RC planes, most of the cases concern ailerons and flapperons (like in that case) . Many real planes crushed due to dynamic aeroelastic phenomenas.

Nope. The control surfaces departed (I suspect as he was flying towards himself and descending, he went too fast) after he pulled up, so he had absolutely no control over what happened. Lovely model but clearly he hadn't put enough work into the control surface hinging.

***** first to go was one engine, everything else was still there. without control the plane would have gone in the ground after it rolled since he was slightly going up before it happened. after the the first control surfaces came off on at least after second engine was lost, no way to control it anymore..

Long shallow dive, slight pull up adding G, airframe could not take it. I was reading somewhere that certain model manufacturers models have been banned from the US RC jet show circuit, not strong enough to handle the speeds they can reach. There are quite a few videos of model aircraft breaking up due to being over stressed, but the possible consequences of a model of this size and speed is scary.

Oh man, what a gorgeous aircraft and such a terrible loss! There's a few ten's of 1000's of $$$ tied up in that, not to mention the man-hours, and to have it all gone in seconds must be tough to bear. I wonder if he'll try again. Even at scale, it's something else to watch that sleek Concorde slice thru the sky so gracefully, I had the good fortune to be directly under the real thing as it came in on landing once. Very close the the runway threshold so it was big & loud and awe-inspiring...8 months later and it was toast and Concorde was grounded.

some people say it wasn't the pilot who leaded the plane away from the crowd .others they say he did,,,, I will support the 2nd opinion that he was still in control even after the disintegration of the first engine from the plane ... now , if left engine is teared out of the plane.... then , aerodynamically this means that the left side would have less drag and resistance than right side. usually in such case plane would go in a turn towards the right side and goes into a slow spiral descend, even if there is no thrust as inertia will keep some lift for the plane under its wings ( that's incase ruder is not used to adjust the turn making side slip )... guess that means it should have had to turn right not totally revers towards the left side ,,,,,isn't it ???? if that is true,, then till this moment the pilot had a control ....that means he was the one who turned it away from the crowd,,,,, and good he did that. why ??? coz later it seems like the plane started elevation ( the pilot had a hope to get high revers it back and figure out a way to land his rc with minimum damages ) but unfortunately the 2nd engine was gone too :( all what he could do was just see it going down but AWAY FROM CROWD AS HE PLANNED .... guess he was or maybe still a air liner or an air force pilot .... sorry for the pilot sorry for the model ...but good job was done

Crashing is an inevitable part of flying RC. Sometimes you can fly a cheap junky model for a few consecutive seasons without any damage, and sometimes a nice flying aircraft with the most reliable top-quality components will bite it on the first flight. If you've put a lot of work & money into a nice model and can't stand the thought of banging it up, don't fly it :)
@purplerocket4300
@purplerocket4300 8 жыл бұрын
RC jets are a high risk anyway because of their speed. Especially this being a delta wing. It's not very practical in design unless you have canard forewings. But you can build a very simple slow flying prop and it will last a lifetime if you're careful.
@BasementEngineer
@BasementEngineer 8 жыл бұрын
Fredrik Björklund Depends on how you define an RC jet... lightweight EDF foamies can crash softly :) Heavy, fast gas turbine powered models tend to make expensive holes in the ground when the fecal matter makes contact with the impeller though. Canard foreplanes aren't gonna help you much with that. I'm from the Chea-Pass school of RC flight; even if you can easily afford to buy the components and build it, if you can't afford to wreck it, you can't afford to fly it! This includes cash cost, time cost, and most expensively of all, emotional energy cost!!

It looks like the landing gear assemble broke apart when the wheels were deployed by the remote controller. The retracting lever, trying to come out, just tore apart the undercarriage of the wing, taking the engine with it. The right landing gear deployed a split second later, and had the same catastrophic damage. Poor structural assembly for the landing gear, and too near the engine.

If it was from the landing gear getting deployed, wouldn't the front gear stick out? Cause I cant see any gears sticking out. Or do you have 3 diffrent switches for the 3 gears?-.- And why would it be that the left one breaks apart 4 seconds before the right one?

Hmm looks like the engine nacelles came off? Looks like bifurcated jet pipes too, so perhaps only 2 turbines. Pretty common to use 2 big engines vs 4 smaller. Cost less and you run a bifurcated jet pipe to replicate 4 working exhaust nozzles. Strange how she crashed, cant tell if it lost the engines or maybe the lines and controls were ripped off with the cowling? Suck! I feel disheartend when I auger in a $200 plane, that sucks!

its ceases to amaze me to this day that no one has developed a parachute system for these models, I mean they cost as much as a decent car. Don't give me bull about how there is not enough space or too heavy, these jets are way over powered. Maybe extremely difficult to get a plane that size completely down without a scratch but at least something to slow it down enough to save some electronic components and more importantly preventing damage to the engines...

Looks to me like the turbine housings were put under too much stress on those little lurches while flying probably causing the glue to fail in keeping it together. That's probably due to the fact of the constant heating and cooling of the turbine housing during and after flight creating minuscule cracks and brittleness. I commend the pilot on his quick reaction to the situation though. Doomed to fly from the start there was nothing he could have done. Very sad.
