Tough question. You do not have a concrete pool, you have a hybrid pool. So uncommon they never even get talked about but they are out there. They worked as a pool. The problem came to how to deal with renovations in the future. Concrete and vinyl pools, and even fiberglass pools, all fail in predictable ways with remediation options. Sometimes a hybrid pool breaks and there is nothing you can do to fix it. One example of this is a hybrid pool where they used a retaining ring at the top of the pool wall. If the deck ever lifts then the pool wall pops out of position, never to return. You cant even hang a liner in it because there is nothing to attach to around the top of the pool wall. Vinyl pools have a very heavy steel wall with a horizontal section for strength and supporting the coping. Hybrid pools do not always have this, and often they do not. It really comes down to a case by case basis at this point as to what you can (or should) do. Hanging a liner looks great in anything. It is all about how leak free it is, and more importantly, how long it will stay that way. A hybrid pool is a unique consideration. Unlike the "concrete pool" I am talking about in this video where you really should just repair your pool properly...in the case of a hybrid pool there is no alternative that you are trying to find a cheaper option for. Most of you hybrid pool owners just want any solution at all. Most pool people will not touch those with a 10 foot pole. Lots to go wrong and no playbook on how to fix it so you take on a load of liability for the same money that you make from more conventional pools (in less time). To answer your question specifically, I would use Basecrete waterproofing on the floor and then plaster (or tile) the floor. Walls get painted with a fiberglass paint. The seam between the floor and walls, and also the seam between wall panels, gets filled with a urethane product like Deck-O-Seal gun grade urethane. Hope this info helps.

@@Swimmingpoolsteve Thank you for your reply! We have a ring at the top of the walls by the deck. There are some gaps in the deck, so knowing this now worries me a bit. I will research how to fix that problem before we have issues. I could see freezing water in that gap causing problems. I really love the idea of tile for the bottom. No company that quoted us even suggested plaster let alone tile. In fact, they quoted acrylic paint which as you said here would have been a disaster. I do need to do the walls. I believe they were painted with the same chlorinated rubber paint the previous owner used, just based on what flakes off. I assume we would need to sand blast that before using the fiberglass paint on the walls. Thank you, thank you!

Think of it this way.... the rough the surface the better anything will stick...the easy cleaning to keep from staining is the slicker the surface.....You will have a very hard time keeping any surface clean if its rough...May not leak but will stain.....Why when you clean your not cleaning all the oils, away from the surface...

Complex question. This is a weir wall meaning wet on both sides, so you need a waterproofing system that resists hydrostatic pressure from both directions. Membrane waterproofing is only good for water pressure from one direction so this needs to be not-membrane. I like Basecrete waterproofing as an option for a waterproofing system for weir walls, but this is not an afterthought that you spray on the weir wall. The whole pool should be treated with waterproofing. It is just the weir wall that will fail first if you do not. Same with weir walls on vanishing / infinity edge pools.

Didn not have wier wall in my lexicon until just not...I should have mentioned it has tile on both sides just the top is now exposed because its a old pool so the top of spill over(wier wall) was tile aswell but in bad condition so removed them and sanded the thinset, or what was left of it, down to the bare concrete. So I just want to waterproof that top concrete before I install( thinset) that piece of granite on top of it.. went with a granite piece so it would last longer than tile with grout, for the same reason bobody puts tiles in the skimmer inlet.. alot of water erosion in those areas..but I digress. Would any kind of deck sealer work? Or should it be some more serious like penetrating sealer? Thanks as always. I think you've answer me a question before this one

A pool like you describe needs sandblasting to remove all of the old paint. People do use water blasting, but with a specialized 30,000 PSI pressure washer.

Same situation millions and millions of chips everywhere! Our Pool was hand built in 1951.

We pressure washed and took a grinder to the sides. I’m hoping that’s enough there’s still paint on it, it’s not completely bare.

Yes but getting rid of thousands of gallons of water contaminated with pool paint is a HUGE pain in the butt. Use vermiculite to absorb paint water for disposal. Check with your local regulations, please. This is just something we figured out one day while cleaning up a pool which had a failed epoxy paint. It was a disaster.
