The fact Guilty Gear characters were more recognizable than the Mortal Kombat characters was a big shocker to me.

Being raised in the early 2000s and seeing nobody recognize a single Mortal Kombat character and yet get almost everyone from a series I never heard of until 3-4 years ago is screwing with my brain rn

Even if Ky is iconic in gear, gear is just still so niche that I’m surprised people recognize Ky over Johnny Cage.

See, I don't blame them for not getting that one; Fatal Fury hasn't had a game in ages and he never made a King of Fighters appearance. The same applies for Big Bear/Raiden 1. Also, it probably would have been best to keep it to characters that are actually FROM fighting games. The PS All-Stars picks were low blows.

Bioshock 2 came out in 2010 and was rated 17+. Realistically you'd have to be born in 1993 or earlier to have any chance of getting him right.

I'd expect every zoomer there to have at minimum dabbled in LoL, that game is like black tar heroin. to be in that age group and not been influenced is indeed a pure soul. Meanwhile I'm just too old to have ever been interested in it.

The fighting game community talks a big game of "oh Smash fans aren't real fighting game fans, they don't know any of our games", but I look at the game sales and of course they don't.

There where 4 characters I couldn't place the name of but recognized. Blizzard (I had Primal Rage on Sega but didn't care for it) Night Wolf (I don't like MK but couldn't place his name) Byte Barq (Name issue) Zetter Burn. Zetter burn is kinda sad cause I mained him when I played Rivals but like I can only remember Maypul's name. I could have flexed on SNK Raiden by calling him Big Bear as a joke because they are the same person

I played Primal Rage with my next door neighbor on Genesis and I can't remember any of the character's names. Literally just claymation dinosaurs and monkes with pissing fatalities. I kept thinking "Riptor" for the dinos but that's Killer Instinct. Which btw, no KI characters in this is a crime.

I feel ya. When I was playing along I was totally like "I would've gotten like 80% of these right, and if I was there I would've totally gotten the Primal Rage or Rivals of Aether pick or an Arms character whose name I forgot."

I usually played Chaos in that game. I don't know how I managed to forget the blue ape that literally blows out an ice cloud was just Blizzard.

People pick it up, play their favorite character, watch the fatalities and drop it. Every EVO MK has been at has the lowest entrants and viewership. MK is a 90's product. It will die on that hill. Kids don't know these characters because the new MKs are not trying to gain an audience. That guy even said he only plays good fighting games.

You'd think a Smasher would pay attention to his OWN roster but even that is a challenge for them

You should DEFINITELY listen to Coney and Alpharad's podcast How Did We Get Here They talked about how they filmed a video on the Santa Monica pier doing just that, with characters printed out on big slides. They put the characters in the best order to trip up regular people. Like all the obvious ones first, Mario, Sonic, Pac Man, then a bit obscure but really cute characters like, Pichu, Isabelle, but then cut straight to Kazuya Mishima. It sounded great but the audio was to fucked up to salvage. One guy even asked what Pyra and Mythra's names were, because "He seen them in the hentai and I'd like to search them up to see more."

If going by Smash Bros. specifically then it would be mostly the original bosses since the playable characters are from other games with the exception of the Mii Fighters so it'd be pretty challenging for sure. If all characters are included and the people have like no gaming knowledge then they're doomed lmao.

Nah Smash players know fighting games they just don't play them. For example: SuperGirlKels had no idea who Terry was but her brother who also plays Smash did get an idea on who he was "Terry from KOF" For Kazuya while she didn't know the character, she did recognized his series Tekken and acknowledge it's popularity.

Well a lot of these guys most likely only play on Nintendo platforms, which MK has never really had a great relationship with.

Besides, I don’t think the guy that said that was being entirely serious/objective considering how many Smash players primarily got into Smash because ‘it has all muh favorite childhood Nintendo characters ^.^’, rather than it’s mechanics.
