I wanted the system to play with friends that aren't in my household and find almost no value to handheld. Like, I never played much on Gameboy, Gameboy Advanced, 2DS, 3DS, etc. So, in a sense, more horsepower would have been nice. Great system if you were more a fan of those instead of the Wii or Wii-U. But I'm also old and think SMB3 is the best title and Galaxy made my head hurt. Like, I wish I could lie about that, but that's just what it does. Constant upside-downy make me head hurt.

I own both a regular switch and switch lite with an oled screen, i admit i love the idea of bringing a full console game with me...but after a while i bought both versions simply cause the battery life would dip way too drastically on the regular switch Overall, cool hardware to me

I just love everything about World, 3 is a phenomenal game also but the overworld map really just didn't look good and the way worlds map goes with star road and everything feels so cool

I couldn't agree more. Once you consider it as a package with Bowser's Fury, ngl it's my second favorite Mario title behind Galaxy 1.

I've played both of those games a lot and I don't get it. Have you played 3 recently? I think the levels are very replayable, and pretty diversely gimmicky too. Remember the sky tower in world 5? The grabbing hand levels in world 8? That level in w7 with the invisible note block pit trap? The star runs on the chomper floors? The lava balls coming from the ceiling? That castle with all the blocks that turn to coins? The wrap-around ascending pipe levels? The angry sun level and return of the sun? The jellyfish open ocean? The pipe grid mazes? 1-2 and the level in w3 where you have to hill slide? That infinite looping level where you have to fly with a shell to beat the level? That single diagonal autoscroll level with the sky demons? The level where you can enter the doors to switch between giant and regular size? The brick pyramid level with the two koopas at the end? The optional autoscroller in w1 with all the hidden 1-ups? The underwater ghost castle? The castle where if you pick the wrong door you fall in water? The only level in the whole series with goomba shoe? The overworld sailing in w3? The w8 tank, boat, air fleet trifecta? The only level with the flying beetles? The level where you have sex? The one where the platform floats over the desert oasis? That one where Mario invents time travel? The goldilocks zone? The gullible monkey? 魚㊥, alt! Gamalon rays? Simpsonitos? President garfield's latest inventing scandal? Rumble. The level where you climb the vines to avoid rising water? The rink WI th th en The ice fortress with the thwomps? The level that gives you the ability to walljump for a second before it starts? The lvels that lets you cure cancer? The level that makes me a furry- the level that lets you catch swordfish? The level that lets you FETCH swordfish? The instrument that keeps your tables level? The United States constitution? The Indus Valley civilization? Hank? Your teenage son's first garage band? The level that give you a certified psychological evaluation? The level that I died on? Little town on the levy? Levian Ryan? 9-27654321? The w2 level where you fly and break through the ceiling bricks at the start? The pyramid afterwards where you break walls with beetle shells? The overworld draw bridges in w3 that change with every level attempt? The ice level with the ball blowing piranha plants? w4.45~ with the pitch black water

The best part of 3 for me is the amount of secrets that’s in that game. No joke, it feels so incredibly rewarding whenever you find a secret power up or a room of 1up tucked away in a pipe in a level. The game in general is very challenging but fair with its difficulty that does require some practice and thinking rather than just run right to the end. Mind you, some levels are like that but some other ones require patience, which in experience, a lot of modern gamers lack.

Ds and wii both had fun mechanics, ds had good powerups, return to classic 2d Mario world/level styles, and star coins made it more interesting than just run to the end. Wii only really added multiplayer and the propeller plus probably better designed shortcuts, but multiplayer was all they really needed. It got stale after that and they stopped adding interesting enough features for it to be fun to try anything but just multiplayer, which wii and 3d world both do infinitely better

The difference is that with 2-JP, it starts out being hard; you know what you're getting into. With 2-US, it starts out as a normal Mario game, but then they throw you a curveball and say "good luck lmao". The latter feels more like a bullshit maneuver.

I know this is a personal thing but even Doki Doki Mario 2 at its hardest isn’t anywhere near as chaotic as the final world of Mario 3 in my mind. Plus, if the last 3 levels are that absurd, you still see 85% of the game. If Lost Levels causes you to give up at world 3 or 4, that’s most of the game that you just didn’t see

Galaxy is 15 years old. Odyssey is 5 years old. I think the recency bias has went away at this point.

Odyssey and Galaxy are the most recent games and those are what the newer generations of people have played the most, a 10yo kid today won't have an NES, SNES, N64 or Gamecube and are more likely to not give a fuck about them

Thats the same thing that happened with 3d world. People complained about it not being a more traditional mario game when it first came out but then after they got that with odyssey they looked back and went “y’know this game wasnt that bad”

I mean if the console can support stellar games I don’t really see what the problem is. Kinda just sounds like you want more overhead for funny big number, or ports of stuff not designed for it Is the great accessibility of blending console and handheld gaming not allowed to be what makes it a “good console”? There was always going to be a sacrifice to performance, and I think they walked that balance well. I think people also forget the system launched in 2017. It’s dated hardware now, but so is the ps4, and I can’t take that shit outside. The only thing that’s even attempted to do what Nintendo did with the Switch is valve’s Steam Deck 5 years later, which still isn’t technically even out for everyone.

And the argument was never "is it a good console" it was "does it have good hardware." Yes, the accessibility IS a huge factor in why it's a good console, hence the entire point of discussion. Mentioning that it is from 2017 is completely irrelevant because they released the Oled, which DOESN'T upgrade the hardware in terms of what the system can actually do. This was released in 2021, so the fact that Fire Emblem Three Houses having fire in certain maps causes your switch to overheat is all the same in the 2021 version. Since they released it again without upgrading the actual parts that need upgrading, it's clear they consider it "good enough," which, yes, it IS "good enough." It has absurd sales. That does not mean, however, that the hardware is good or up to a high standard. The hardware sucks. I want to play my nintendo game on my nintendo console without my nintendo console struggling to handle having some grass in the wind. That's not a crazy request, that's wanting my $300 console to not work as a space heater just because I've been playing an N64 game for a few hours.

Sunshine has better movement and level design than odyssey and you aren’t constantly shaking the controller just to travel at max speed

The act of just jumping around is so much fun in SM64. I could be entertained for hours just chaining long jumps and bouncing off of walls. Newer games are better in most ways, but in SM64 you just have so much momentum and versatility when running around.
