What is the relation between an everyday use of makeup and substance addiction? In this talk, Marie-Pascale Lafrenière reveals the surprising ways in which makeup can affect mental health from a very young age. Inspired by her own battle with anxiety and depression, she shares why she decided to start the #ConfidentEitherWay movement. Marie-Pascale Lafrenière is a post-media feminist artist from Gatineau, Quebec. She obtained her bachelor’s degree at Université du Québec en Outaouais in 2017 before pursuing an MFA at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Her work questions the relations between female representation and mental health. In her performances, videos and art objects, she explores the ways in which pop culture and social media are redefining our perception of the female gender. She also draws inspiration from her own experiences with mental illness. In 2016, she was awarded the Scholarship of Excellence in Visual Arts by the Université du Québec en Outaouais and Axenéo7. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Its your inner beauty that matters. Too many women are brainwashed thinking they have to look a certain way to be accepted by society.

I knew a woman who wore makeup and was obsessed with it, she was very insecure and very promiscuous, ended up cheating on her husband, and was enthralled by Hollywood

You dont have an average face and i dont even have to have seen it to know that. You have a unique face, no one on this planet has the same. Anything thats unique can never be average, its basic logic. You wanna know whats average? Trying to look like everyone else by putting on make up.

I dont wear makeup for the past three years. I think feeling confident should not depend on your appearance and also its too much job for regular-everyday life , we have more important thing to do right ? I think makeup is maybe much more appropriate for show business.

Great talk more teenage girls should be given the link to this video. However, I'm baffled that in the end she still advocates for the use of make up just 'for fun'.. THAT kind of discards most of the good information. Perhaps Marie needs to do some research on the toxicity of make up and the levels of arsenic found in a big amount of the products. I understand that growing up looking at people wearing make up and then proceeding to follow suit is hard to latch out of but it really needs to be addressed. Perhaps a make up anonymous clinic needs to be set up in order to save future generations from this very real societal ill.

I’m just a man going down an internet rabbit hole rn. So far my assumption is that women are incredibly insecure in the modern world and put in makeup for compliments and to be treated better by those around them. It’s almost like women spend money on compliments and status when they purchase makeup. Which I don’t believe is psychologically healthy. I want to learn this topic though from all viewpoints. Currently, the only makeup I feel people are justified in wearing is very essentric colors that exude your personality and give off a unique look. The girls who just try to get a kardashian esque look is where the main issue is. Maybe this video will slightly change that view tho 🤷🏼‍♂️

As a novel activity....maybe it's like a painting ....but ya.. it look odd...? But as a temp bandage in case of perso feeling down to cover patches et that makes even nice ppl judge us?...I dunno... Maybe as play... I'm not sure if it makes women attractive..... very mild make up...to indicate interest.... Could be patches.....etc

Women should decide how to appear in society themselves; if they like to put on a lot of makeup, they should, and if they want to be their naturally beautiful selves, it's up to them again. No one should force them to do it or not. WE ARE FREE HUMAN BEINGS.

This is why the world is how it is. Keep encouraging makeup, this is why women can never learn how to love themselves naturally. This is why there are a lot of insecurities in women, women who wear makeup give a false beauty standard to the world. This is why a lot of people are insecure because of these false standards.

On clowns and mimes are fun, to me it looks ridiculous and repels me, even hair dye... even women themselves promote those things if they see a girl natural they think that are not well groomed and are lazy, not at all, among other things can be talked about it.
