***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

Hello Sarah and Kevin. I raised hundreds of Standard Toulouse geese and had a large Sears red wood wet hatch incubator. My geese started laying in mid February at one year old. I put a magic marker dot on the first one and left the first one in the nest. Mine did lay in a cushy hay nest they rearranged. They lay every other day. Then I started collecting them in a cool place, covered by a damp towel. When I had enough, I wrote the date on the side of the eggs. 28 days for a hatch. I hand turned the eggs twice a day ( dates up > dates down, so I knew I had turned them. The goslings have an egg tooth and will start tapping on the large end on the 26th day. If I gently tap on the shell and say, "VEE!" They will answer and start tapping like crazy! Pretty cool. They will bond to you when hatched. Make sure you candle them up to two weeks. A bad egg can explode in the incubator. Best of luck. ~ Diane

@ritamcartt-korton283- You are welcome. I really enjoyed raising geese. Another tip. They do not see well after dark. Be sure to get them inside, as they will just plunk themselves down and be a target for predators. Mine mated for life and protected other goslings in the group. Have fun! ~ Diane

Adding straw will induce the geese to build a nest. They need lots of it to build it up nice and big. Shavings won't cut it for a goose nest.

I don't recommend weed fabric around grapes and berries. I did this in texas and regretted it because the grass grows right up through and the little sucker plants have a hard time growing. the grass won't hurt them; you can put a tin can around the base of the grapes if you want to weed eat around them for asthetics

I agree. Once the grapes become established and are tall enough, pasture the geese in them. Wait until the vines are thick enough the geese can't chew them to pieces.

I had White Chinese geese years ago and they were never aggressive toward me but would chase my teenage sons. The gander was better about that after I gave him a soccer ball to play with. When they started laying eggs, it was always in the corner of their shelter and they covered them with bedding.

When the geese are close to laying even the females will lower their heads and walk toward you while hissing. The males, no matter how friendly they are to you now, will get aggressive. Hold your ground and walk toward them just talking to them. They will, hopefully, walk away. Watch your back though. Provide a nest of deep hay in their coop area. They will like a clean area for laying eggs, although their dirty feet will dirty the eggs. They bury their eggs under the hay so you’ll have to dig through the hay around the nest area.

Great to see the upgrades and getting ready for spring. Always seems to come like a speeding train , always gets there quicker than you think. Always seems like gardening, you have everything planned out, then bang, your 2-3 weeks behind. Anyway guys, looks like ya'll are getting things in hand, ready to go. Kevin, chiggers love me as well. When I know I'm going to be at risk, the clothes I'm going to wear all get soaked or sprayed down heavy with Pine Sol, it really seems to help. Good luck guys, keep an eye on the clock, it always runs faster when you get a little behind. God bless ya'll and stay safe out there on the homestead. You don't need any delays.

My geese laid their eggs at all hours And they hid their nests, or tried to. At one point they were even laying along the edge of the water in our pond. And like others you have heard from, some of my geese began laying at around a year of age. I've had them lay in the Spring and all through the Summer. I have new geese now, (an Eagle took my female Toulouse 🥵) I have African Grey Geese now and they are young so it will be fun to see when they begin to lay. I got these geese as 2 week old goslings just before Thanksgiving last year, 2023, from a lady a few miles from me. She was shocked that her goose was laying in November.

Either paint your fruit tree trunks white or put the white wrap around them. That will cool down the tree sap and keep them from flowering before it really gets warm. I don't know what type of paint but here in apple country in the Central Washington State we do this for our fruit trees.

Two wild blackberry species. Native blackberries have thin and reddish stalks. Invasive Himalayan blackberries are the finger-thick, green stalks. Any other native raspberries are either first-year growth or second-year growth canes. One needs to understand one's canes and fruiting production on the canes - for annual pruning out the non-fruiting canes. Easy to clip any length of wild raspberries and blackberries, and lay down in the ground (like sugar cane) 2-3 nodes. They will rapidly form their own rootings. There is no need for rootone hormones, as canes buried in the ground (even having a node and leaf near any wet surface ground will readily root themselves. One can easily start the cuttings in the growhouse with damp potting soil, and then transplant the largely-rooted canes into the vineyard.

Most breeds of geese start laying around 9 months starting in spring season. However, fertility rates in young geese tend to be low not much above 20% in their first year. Geese mature around two years old and from 2-4 years old are their best laying and fertility years. Laying and fertility drop off significantly after year 5 even though geese generally live 10-15 years and longer in some cases. Commercially we cull our flocks at the beginning of year 5 unless they are a rare species or a species that is difficult to reproduce. Good luck!

I remember my Mom and stepdad planted 6 tame blackberry plants in a small bed about 15 feet long and provided a simple wire fence for them to climb and run. They tied the branches as they grew to the fence. The first year was ok productive and after pruning at the right time, the second year provided 26 gallons of blackberries! And they have exploded from there. Unless you plan to sell the berries, I would limit the plants. They are prolific. And I agree about the chiggers. The tame blackberries with their lack of thorns and open growing to not encourage chiggers, they are great! It's nice to pick gallons of the wonderful very big berries without scratching your skin raw from chiggers as a result.

Good morning! You guys are taking advantage of the warm weather, and I took advantage of the cool weather to get my stuff done. It only took me a few years to learn that laziness leads to gardening in the heat. 😆 So, this year, I worked on my garden a little at a time, and got all of the heavy work done, before the spring heat sets in. I already have a few seeds in the ground, and the Lord has sent rain for us this weekend. So now, I can sit back, relax for a couple of days, and enjoy these fruits of my labor.

I raised French Toulouse Geese for 20 years and they would lay in one nest only and only at a certain time of year, breeding season. My ducks layed every morning and didn't need a nest, they layed in the coop. I loved my Toulouse Geese, they were wonderful and produced great babies that grew quickly and were ready for harvest quickly. French Toulouse will hiss but never attacked anyone. I had Chinese Geese and had to give them away as they would attack my children. You may want to put out some straw for the geese, my geese would not lay on the ground, they only laid in a "nest" of straw or hay. My Toulouse mated for life, I don't know if your geese do that.

I use dog crates in my coop and my ducks lay inside those crates In fact my ducks will run back in the coop if they need to lay an egg My geese are Pomeranian saddleback Stella was born April 4/2023 She was raised with a few ducklings. Shortly after those ducks started to lay eggs in November my stella also started ti lay eggs. She also used one of my bigger dog crates She laid through dec. Then it got really cold and she stopped. Then warmed up a few weeks and she laid 4 more eggs in start of feb then stopped I got her a gander in dec who is almost 2 years old They started to mate within 2 weeks and are still in mate mood I did see her eating the oyster shells yesterday Maybe she will start laying again She was very young when she started to lay egg as well as way out of season I believe her being brought up with ducks is why she started when they did Putting in some kind of covered area in the coop or pen area maybe help to encourage egg laying for nesting area They like bedding they can build up to make the nest and cover the eggs One thing I have read is the first year eggs often don’t bring in babies I did try to incubate the last 4 eggs and none started Maybe to young yet My sister-in-law runs embden geese Her last year babies are also starting to mate now and the female has started to lay eggs this past week Just want to add I found a goose egg today So I was correct on why she was eating oyster shells again I’ll incubate every egg I get abc hopefully we get some offspring !

My younger daughter’s MIL keeps chickens, ducks, geese & turkeys. Only the turkeys are kept separated, the others are all together. No problems. She has several regular customers for her duck eggs, one does a lot of baking & prefers the duck eggs because they are richer. The other customers are allergic to chicken eggs so they buy the ducks eggs. Different species so different DNA, no allergies. My experience is that the goose eggs have a very good flavor, due to their larger size you don’t need many for an excellent omelet. Don’t know how they would work in baking, you would have to adjust the amount of egg.

I am grateful for a father-in-law who prunes and ties up my grapes each spring! The warm weather coming to Michigan means that it's time yo tap the maple trees and make syrup.

As a fellow goose lover...Maybe the conflicting info has something to do with laying/going set to full hatch/successfully parenting. Laying eggs could definitely happen at a year. Going set - maybe...as well as varying levels of success as well as parenting to varying levels of success. Best chance for geese to successfully accomplish a full step by step process from lay to gosling independence from their parents (typically) is by 3 years old. Geese are extremely family oriented. Your entire flock will actually work together to protect the goslings.

We are expecting a double batch of cicadas this year so you may want to think of some sort of protection for your young fruit trees.
