Welcome back to the 'Honest Tattooer' podcast! Episode 57 takes a deep dive into the complexities of the tattoo industry with our esteemed guests Bobby Johnson, Bryan Black, and Kevin Laroy. Titled 'Confronting Gatekeeping and the Copycat Dilemma,' this episode sheds light on the often-unspoken challenges artists face.
🚫 In the first segment, we dissect the concept of gatekeeping within the tattoo community. What does it mean? How has it shaped the industry's landscape, and what are its implications for both new and seasoned artists?
🎨 The conversation heats up as we transition to the contentious issue of plagiarism and artistic imitation. Our hosts andguests share personal anecdotes about being on both sides of the coin - having their work copied and being accused of drawing too much inspiration from their peers.
🔍 It's an episode filled with raw insights, personal reflections, and a collective call for a more understanding and respectful artistic community.

For the first 3 years of my career I didn’t get tattooed. It was a promise to my parents to wait until I was 21 and did 2 years of college. Lost opportunities with clients because I had no tattoos, they didn’t like the fact of someone permanently marking them without having actually experienced it.

im not a tattoo artist yet, still finishing my portfolio, however im not super inspired by the tattoo artists that are in my area... i know I'm at level zero so anyone in the industry will have SOMETHING to teach me, but its discouraging because Im not super inspired by them...

I think a good point to bring up about seminars is everyone’s “years” of experience are different. You could take 2 artists who have been tattooing for say 5 years and there could be a noticeable gap between their abilities and knowledge. So then if you double that and take it to 10 year that gap can get larger. So it makes measuring abilities and knowledge based on years not as cut and dry as it sounds. But doing the hand selected portfolio route like you guys mentioned makes sense to me. Or even a minor interview possibly to see what people do and don’t know yet. Theres loads of incredibly skilled artists out there who still attend loads of seminars but are on the same or higher level than the person doing the seminar. So a minor interview may help sort out who is not only “under qualified” but possibly even “over qualified” for that particular seminar.

Completely agree! That’s why I think portfolio submissions should be a requirement for SOME but not all of the seminars and courses that are available out there.

Best part of any info given. You can share all knowledge possible. Dosent mean everyone hearing it will take it in or work on it or put it into practice. Most don’t have the drive or put in the effort regardless how much knowledge is given to them

Bobby Johnson hit right on with that comment about getting tattooed so he can elevate the experience with his clients.. I fucking hate getting tattooed and I want to be able to provide a better experience. Getting tattooed puts you in a state where you can relate to your clients

Yall I totally resonate with sooooo much of this. If u wanna be a tattooer, u will be. If you really fucking want it and u work hard every day and you are FILLED with passion and insatiable desire to be the best you can be. At that point it’s hard to be gatekept ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ all these artists have that in common. They fucking wanted it. And they got it. And they still want it and that’s why they’re at the top. Much respect and hope I’ll get there one day. Feels like I’ll always suck, but I’m motivated as fuck :)

Bobby tattooing at the level he does and winning ink master saying he isn't qualified to teach anyone to tattoo is INSANE. Ofc he can. I feel like his true reason is that he is too focused on his craft and that is totally all good. The man has the knowledge. Tons of bums out there taking on apprentices just to use them for free labor and take their fee. Bobby is the man.

I attended Eden's winter symposium where Kevin and Bobby both presented! I almost didn't go because I don't even have my apprenticeship yet (met with Deanna about that 😉), but I messaged the shop and asked if I would look silly going, given that I'd never held a machine. They said there was no live tattooing, and some concepts may go over my head but I was welcomed in. I was so nervous everyone would think I was a poser to dare showing up, but everyone I spoke to was encouraging and applauded me for taking the initiative to learn. That seminar made me feel so certain I was in the right place among my people, and if the culture had been more gatekeep-y I wouldn't have gone. I'm so thankful the industry is moving in a compassionate direction thats as excited about art as I am. Thanks for a great podcast to listen to while I draw! I can't wait to join your ranks in the future! (Also, I got tattooed by Bryan Black in 2018 at Elm St Tattoo, so cool to see him here)

Also, if I had to name Bobby's style, I'd say Neo-Nouveau. Similar feeling to romantic, but I think his work with lines and delicate composition speak to a new rendition of art nouveau
